My Dream Machine – A Bowman M122

Ever since I bought my first Bowman, an M167 from Olivier, I have been bitten by the Bowman bug. One day I mentioned to Phil - Mr Mamod - that every day I was spending hours trying to track down a reasonable condition M122. That night he messaged me to say how lucky he was, he had managed to buy on at a local auction – for me! I couldn’t believe how lucky I was, first to have such a good friend, and second, to have finally landed an M122. It was in original condition, albeit rather unloved in a wood-wormed box, with a lot of corrosion to the base plate and to some other parts.

Phil kindly repaired the burner for me, and a few weeks later it arrived at Johnny’s Quinta a Vapor in Portugal. After taking a lot of photos I stripped it and started the marathon of rust and corrosion removal, polishing and painting. What I found was a barely used engine with one stripped thread & two non-original nuts.

The chimney was beyond recovery so was replaced with one of Kevin’s pieces.

The boiler had a lot of nasty soot, which I removed with kitchen degreaser

After all the cleaning and polishing the steam pipe was loose in the boiler, so I took the opportunity to replace it. It was in pretty rotten condition.

The new transfer is from Mooseman, of course.

I added a few washers in the drive chain to avoid too much plate wear, e voila. The loveliest engine in Portugal! It will be steaming soon.

I now have an E135, M101, M122, M130, M135, M140, M158, M167, M175, M180, a HIPOWER and a Snipe. I’m getting there.

Some fine restoration magic there John, likely much better now than when than brand new. Love it

Top man Phil for arranging an engine and top man John for bringing it back to better than showroom standard 😍

I honestly hope mine can be 2/3rds as good as that once its done, and I'd be a happy man! 😎
All the best,

{ Ben }

what a wonderful job you made of that
you should be justly proud, the only bowman
I still really want to get is the m122, but I keep
getting sidetracked with other purchases 😅
