Hello there I am glad I have discovered this forum. I'm Matthew and I am a 40 year old law PhD student from Kent though studying at Essex. Long story about going back to study at this age. Used to practice as a solicitor but hated it so travelled teaching English before going to do my Law Masters . I discovered a love of teaching and loved the law but not the practice and so hope to teach at University in the Human Rights field once i have finished. I would not want to be a schoolteacher sadly in the UK given the current climate :(  I have recently brought out the Mamod SP2 and traction engine that I owned as kid and have been having a lot of fun with them. I have just pulled the trigger on a Wilesco D10 from Forest. I always coveted Wilscos as a kid as they seemed more intricately engineered and detailed but they were considerably out of my price range. I still have the box of my Mamod SP2: price £20! I actually fancy a Jensen too after stumbling on their site though the guy at Forest steered me to the Wilesco as he said it was a better engineered product and Jensen suffered from defective paint. On browsing the forum I see the latter is true though not necessarily the former and may end up buying the Jensen I had my eye on too: don't you just love rabbit holes? Only thing that put me off was the fact that he said in conversation that he raised the issue with the owner who was quite defensive and rude about the paint thing which kind of makes me lairy about Jensen's attitude to quality and customer service. The look the business mechanically  though and I do like the regulator! I I first got into steam as a kid riding on the Paignton-Dartmouth railway and being engrossed on the sights sounds and smells. I later had a chance to go onboard the SS Shieldhall boat when the engines were in action and was mesmerized by the big triple expansion engines. That is when I plagued the parents to get me the Mamod for Christmas.

I have always been into engines and mechanical things: cars, mechanical watches and always been a bit of a traditionalist: write with a fountain pen, use a double edge razor etc. I sometimes think I was born 40 or 50 years too late! learned to muck around with engines as a kid on a Briggs and Stratton lawnmower which amazingly I still have: those engines are unburstable (just look at the youtube videos of people running them with no oil and bleach in the crank case etc and not being able to kill them...why don't ask me!). I can't make head nor tail of my car engine though which lives under a plastic cover! I am also into clockwork toys and models. I have a few Schucos and have just discovered Kovap tractors which unleash the big kid in me with their variable speeds. I am also a keen mountain biker and like my cycles: my shop runner is an ex Royal Mail Pashley Pronto called the Elephant Bike: refurbished by a charity that sends them out to Afica. An apt name as the thing is built like an elephant!Other interests are music: play the piano and organ, traveling and writing and, just to show that I am not a totally old fashioned sort, technology and the net as well. I hope to share in this community and get some advice particularly about the Mamod traction engine which I will post elsewhere. I was an impetuous kid at 11 and just wanted to run the thing... on Kent's lovely hard water which I fear has turned the pipework into an replica of a 60 a day man's arteries.  Anyway that's me done. Always up for a chat and to discuss matters of interest

Matthew:

I am also a lawyer by training, but I haven't practiced in 7 years. I gave it up at 50. So, you were smarter than me!

Welcome to the Forum. There is an incredible wealth of knowledge in the members and they are so helpful.

In any event, glad you found us and welcome fro the Great State of Texas!

Thanks for the nice words everyone! I have already got some sound advice. Looks quite a lively place too. I did stumble upon a similar forum but seems pretty inactive. I rcognize a few people I think from Youtube, Knut for example. @txlabman yea law in practice wasn't for me. I think I am too much of a nice guy and gentle soul for it. I foolishly chose it as youngster thinking I would become rich by it...no chance.  I found it grubby and it took its toll as I sweated blood trying to get in as a working class boy. I am much more suited to the theory I think.
