Talk about Copying something.....
Both movies have basicly the same plot.
Brit Commandos diguised as POWs to raid a German strongpoint.
I like the story line in both movies,
I think the one with the Ger. Jews is quite interesting,
As well as the one where the Commandos "allowed" themselves to be captured.
Both equally good movies though.

...in my view, the best war films in north aftika are the hill/sea of sand/ice cold in alex and 5 graves to cairo with 5 graves being made in 1943 theres lots of original equipment and vehicles.

'Ice Cold in Alex' is a great film Mick. Have you noticed that the Katy is 4WD? Apparently some Katy bodies were mounted on CMP chassis - or it could be a conversion for the film.

'The Way Ahead' is another good North Africa film - although a lot of it is about training in the UK. It was a 1944 propaganda film made by the Army Film Unit.

I'll have to track down a copy of 'Five Graves to Cairo'.

'Raid on Rommell' was on the TV recently and I found it hard work and I have no memory of 'Tobruk'.

Hi,

I always had a soft spot for 'Play Dirty' with Michael Caine, again it was a similar plot to the previously mentioned films and did feature an 'Opel Blitz' ambulance. Also 'The English Patient' had some good desert scenes.

All the best,

Paul

Hard to handle the last scene though. I really liked the M37 conversion.
'Raid on Rommel' was dreck when I was a kid, so I don't know if I'd be any kinder now; I recall the stripes on the road and how it was obviously shot in Baja (and probably some outside of LA in the Mojave). Since it was a Unviersal movie, at least they they had use of the neat MBZ G4 staff car in amongst the M60's, M211's and a WC-56.

I love all the north afrika movies, but i must say i prefer the 1940s stuff. My fav directors are michael powell& emeric pressburger. some fantastic war genre films, one of our aircraft is missing/a canturbury tale with one of the first 'grafic matches'in film history.
