Here is my Tamiya M48A3 with Hunnicutts drawing overlayed. Of course there is still a question of the inaccuracies of either the drawing or the model, but I found it interesting.

The Hunnicutt drawing appears to have the vision block ring under the commander's cupola, the Tamiya model doesn't, but the height appears OK otherwise . Also, the Hunnicutt drawing doesn't have the Diesel "Camelback" deck that is on the Tamiya model - could that be lenght difference? Where did you center the drawings? Parts of the kit seem to be basically in the right place. Some details would need to be worked on but this seems to support the idea the shape is basically OK. Maybe the kit doesn't actually "ride high."
