Guys,

Would any one have the S.Pz.Abt 503 unit history. I'm after any information concerning 3 Tigers sent back for factory maintenance on the 1.8.44. I'm trying to find out if any of the Tigers sent back is a King Tiger with a Porsche turret.

Cheers Mike

The unit did not receive Tiger IIs until June 44. J

Jordan,

I know 1 Kompanie collected King Tigers with Porsche turrets and saw action in July 1944, I was wondering if any of these KT were sent back on the 1.8.44 for factory repairs, 3 Kompanie got King Tigers in late July 1944.

S.Pz.Abt 503 formed part of Panzer-Regiment Bake during January 1944. It was still equipped with Tiger Is. As part of the relief force attempting to rescue encircled troops in the Korsun Pocket, the 503 had a strength of 34 T Is. The battalion lost 27 tanks after being trapped in Hube's Pocket in April 44; it was sent west for rest and refitting. It was during this period that the 503 received its first 12 KTs.

Guys,

I know about the 12 KT with 1 Kompanie, but I'm wondering if any one has the unit history which might mention the transport of 3 Tigers on the 1.8.44 for factory repairs and if so was there any Tiger II's from 1 Kompanie.

Hi,

There is informantion that two Porche turreted Tiger II were left at Mailly-le-Camp when the rest on the Tiger II went to the front line just North of the R Seine approx late August 44, these two were then sent direct back to Germany, turret numbers 314 and xxx. Suffered from mechanical problems.

I believe, but may be wrong, that one of these Tiger II was also called "Annaliese" and appeared in the the East later (Hungary ???) maybe.

I have the book, in German. It doesn't seem to mention these three Tigers directly, but there are descriptions of incidents in July and August, and the turret numbers of several Tigers of 1 Kompanie are mentioned.

There were no KTs issued to the 503 in January 44. On Page 149 of the unit history, it indicates that on January 3, 1944, a new Tiger was received. On Page 150, Tiger 322 (Feldwebel Weiland) was mentioned as the third factory-new Tiger already back at the maintenance facility (January 11) because of engine problems. There is no mention of these tanks (all T Is) being evacuated by rail back to Henschel. The maintenance facility must have been somewhere in the neighborhood of Shmerinka, which is where the railhead was located. Once again, there were no KTs issued to any unit of the 503 until late/after April 44.

when you type 1.8.44, do you mean January 8th or August 1st? because if you mean the former, the info in the book is good re three new T Is.
