I have always cleaned the material with a combination of a tooth brush and bathroom cleanser, aka scouring powder and warm water. This cleans the material as well as finely abrades the surface to accept paint better.

I paint with acrylics and have not used enamels in years due to odor and health concerns in my model space even though I do vent it. The acrylic seems to hold just fine for me.

Cheers!

Hey Bob give the Tamiya Acrylics a try. Thin them with de-natured alcohol (I use the 91% stuff). As you know they are readily available at Riders.
