Hello All,
Can one of our Italian tank fans point out the most accurate correction set to build a true M13/40 from the Italeri M14/41 kit?
I have come across a few sets but some described as being for the M14/30 are really for the M14/41.
Thanks

Because that is what the Italeri and Tamiya kits depict. Neither one is a real M13/40 to start with despite the box title.

And that's the Royal Model conversion set. It looks like it might be a pretty good starting point.Right.so is there a backdate set that allows
one to build an accurate M13/40 using the Italeri kit as a donor?

You'd still need to backdate the radiator "hump" in the rear as well as the turret roof to make an early M13/40.
Brach Models offers a couple of full-resin M13/40 kits (different production series), but unfortunately does not sell a conversion kit. The Brach kits have generally good reviews.

Of the two styrene kits, Tamiya and Italeri, the Italieri M14/41 is the only one that's accurate.
The Tamiya kit has features of both the M13/40 and M14/41 not to mention fundamental dimension errors because of its "motorized toy" antecedents (this includes Tamiya's updated re-release). In the end, the Tamiya kit is neither an M13/40 nor is it an M14/41.
Fortunately, the Italeri kit is actually a quite accurate M14/41 even if it's a little soft and basic in the details.
You can kit-bash the Tamiya and Italeri kits together into an accurate M13/40 if you're willing to do the work. It's not particularly hard. The Tamiya kit is not absolutely necessary for this, but it does have a few useful bits.
Here's a build blog with my M13/40http://www.armorama.com/modules.php?op= ... 082&page=1
Here's the research / reference info that I used for the build:

Good luck!

So any dimensional issues they may (or may not) have, have nothing to do with being motorized since they weren't/

Wow. That is some impressive research. Thanks for sharing! And that's the Royal Model conversion set. It looks like it might be a pretty good starting point.

But the toy-like features along with the basic hull dimension errors suggest to me that the original Tamiya kit design had motorization in mind. IIRC, the kit was released right about the time that Tamiya dropped motorization from their new releases, so I believe that Tamiya's "M13/40" was likely a transition design. So any dimensional issues they may (or may not) have, have nothing to do with being motorized since they weren't/
Tamiya did make some improvements with the reissue, like the link-and-length tracks and the small fret of PE parts (the new commander figure isn't half-bad, either), but they would have done themselves a favor by just doing a whole new kit. If they had, they would have the only 1/35 scale injection molded M13/40. As it was, they tried to "make a silk purse from a sow's ear" with the result that their kit is really only good for pirating details off of it.
And no, unfortunately, the Tamiya link and length tracks will not fit the Italeri kit without more work than the results are worth (IMO). This is because of the fundamental dimensional errors in the Tamiya kit. The "pre-sagged" Tamiya tracks will not line up on the Italeri suspension.
Fortunately, both Fruil and Spade Ace sell link-to-link AM tracks for the Italian M13-M15 series of AFVs.
