Easy enough to find these with winterketten but with shurtzen also i'm finding difficult. Not even sure they were set up to work that way like the panzer IV's...... Anyone have any pics or reference ideas? Not concerned at this point with the type of panzer III just an example of this configuration. Thx

wrong tracks but I think the ostketten were actually wider than the winterketten so if it would fit the stug III like that with shurtzen I suppose it would fit the panzer III. would still like to see a reference pic...

Chad,

Actually, these are the later Ostketten tracks on the StuG.III, not the Winterketten which were quite a bit wider.

Tom

I know, but these are the only pics I could find coming close to the wider winterketten, maybe the supports are in the same order.

hi

Good question and yes difficult to find the combination.

Have checked a few books and found ONE photo of what you are after, well sort of ..

In Squadron Signal 2024 Pz III In Action on page 32. thers a PzBefwg III ausf J. It has full turret Schurzen. It has THE RAILS for the hull Schurzen BUT NO Schurzen hull plates. Winterkette tracks are fitted.

The same picture is in a number of books. I have not posted the pic, as to scan it will damage the book.

One reason for the combination of winterkette and Schurzen being hard to find is the time frame.

The winterkette was IIRC only to be issued on the eastern front.
The Schurzen only started to be fitted in 1943. By the winter 1943-44 The Pz III was being phased out as a gun tank hence not many PzIII gun tanks left to be isued witht he winterkette track. The PzIII gun tanks were being used on secondary fronts ie Italy, Norway, Balkans etc.

hope this helps
Andrew

I didn't realize the winterketten were wider.... would shurtzen on the panzer III even fit over them? May be looking for something that can't be found....

Chad,

You are probably right, the skirts wouldn't fit with Winterkette.

:- To model a Flammpanzer III with zimmerit, turret schurzen & Ostketten serving in Hungary 1945 - Flammpanzer were certainly around in Hungary during 1945 - would it be "stretching credibility" to add Zimmerit & Ostketten ?

Hello, nice picture, but that is a asuf G or ausf F??, seems to be a mix of eraly hull (maybe ausf F) with a late upper hull wtih comander cupula and bolt on armor.
