Hi Guys,

well after seeing all the recent fantastic builds and the fact that i lost it with my T/34/76 entry i decided i'd have a go at my all time fav wish list tank...(thank you Tamiya). Ever since seeing that photo of the Monster in the Berlin Street with battered and brusied fenders and that massive gun looking completely out of place in those tight streets, with that large turret white banding i knew i wanted to build one.

And then Tamiya helped me out...and everyone else as well i'm thinking.? So i was going to do the Berlin Monster but since everyone else is kind of doing a similar one i thought i'd look for some inspiration else where. I loved the build article from Mr Zaloga in MIL MOD and that has been my base, alongside builds from Spencer and Rick etc. I found the tank i wanted to build. A Polish Tank from the 4th Heavy Tank Regt as they enter the town of Miroslawiec, Poland in March 1945. The tanks of this regt were pretty beat up and some still retained their white wash on upper turrets and surfaces. Some had a very individual application of white wash and i will be trying to recreate it as per photos, and a little artistic license !!!

Anyway here's the build so far, it was going to be a OOB build at first and then the bug got me.....!!
All the weld seams were redone and new torch cuts done also, cast effect added and lots of smaller details like handles and the like, not as good as Pats fantastic models but enough for me..and my dodgy eyes these days.

Just a word on the kit...i still don't get the fact that Tamiya can't do a slide mould one piece Gun barrel..in the scale and the fact its a big gun it needs to be done guys, and i'm sorry to say i always have a few issues with their tracks...maybe i'm just rubbish at building them..( no comments please)
Here's the pic's..comments on them are welcome..sorry about photos am on the case with that one.
kind regards
Doug

Hey Mate;

That is a good-looking JS, my friend. I agree with you, this is one of Tamiya's finest 48th kits to date, easily.

I love what you've done with the fenders, I just cut mine off and replaced them with lead foil, as per the one Spence Pollard did a few years ago, in 35th scale.
You are also right on the money, this is the kit that NEEDS a replacement gun from... I'd say RB Models. That is just what this kit needs to put it over the top, but I expect to see one soon, along with a nice etch set from Hauler. I'm not "in the know", but it wouldn't surprise me at all.
In any case, I love the kit, and I love your build. I'm keen to see more soon.

Cheers, Pat

Hello Doug: while building mine recently, Tamiya's printing of the Polish insignia decals came into question. One view offered was that the coloured segments of the insignia were not handed as printed by Tamiya. Perhaps one to consder if of interest. Looking forward to another Polish project. Cheers, Ralph.

I like it. How did you do the cast effect? Is it stippled Mr Surfacer?

Cheers

Hi Calum ,

thanks for the comments, the cast effect was done by drill and burr tech,( bit old fashion i know, but thought it would be ok ), then light sanding, then Mr Surfacer 500 thinned with Tamiya Lacquer thinner and brushed on. All the torch cuts were done with sharp scalpel and 500. I may redo the effect if in the painting stages it doesen't come out the way i want it to look.

kind regards

You are right that during that period Polish IS had wore out white wash.
The tactical numbers that time in 4 Heavy Tank Regiment were 3 digits:

But the way 4 digits system system had Polish 5 Heavy Tank Regiment which fought around Bautzen area April/May 45.
There is only one photo of IS from that unit captured by Germans: tactical number 5100 and painted name "Tadeusz"

Doug,

It really looks very cool with all that battle damage and you know what? I knew you could not hold yourself and you would join the JS party here finally...

Keep us posted amigo.

Hi Marek,
thank you for the in-site, i tried that link but it wouldn't work?
I would like any pics if you have any of the IS II units in that town or village, i was going by the few pics in MIL-MOD article and on web, which are mainly from the rear !!! Though they seem to show a 4 digit number, but will recheck again, thanks for the info.
Kind regards
Doug
