... given will be able to post. Reading the DGs will be still possible without logging in. The downside: Any control that was there already is now a bit easier. I think it is ok, while some poeple will be too lazy to log in and will not post as much. I do not care as long as there is a "Remember Me" or "Keep Logged On" option.

We have had quite a bit of trouble with people posting messages that are abusive and unwelcome on the site. It is always hard to identify offenders from just their IP address, and so having registration menas that we can ban any repeat offenders.

We are not trying to be Big Brother and watch your every move - nothing like that at all! It just means that we can keep the trouble-makers at bay and keep the discussion boards for their original purposes.

Best wishes

Registration done, should work OK now.

Is it still OK to add NO and SPAM (or similar) to my email address to prevent it being misused by entrapreneurs selling all kinds of enlargements, debt-programs etc?

Hyperscale is doing a similar thing. You MUST have a Network 54 account and MUST be accepted to participate on at least some of the forums.

It is currently possible, and looks likely to remain so, to get an email address from a third-party site without divulging personal information (but I don't know if this holds true in every country).

If you use this address merely to communicate with ML, and to pass your real address to correspondents who mail you offline, then even the third-party site cannot gain a deep insight into who you are.

So much for Big Brother - how about protection?

The benefit of this system is really to the ML administrators, not directly to you. It raises the cost of causing trouble; the miscreant must create new email and Net54 accounts before posting an abusive message, accounts that may become unusable afterwards. Or, the miscreant must risk an existing identity in which they may have accumulated a reputation they don't want to abandon.

These costs should exceed the enjoyment of causing trouble, in most cases.

Having a computer, phone number, ISP, etc. already gives "big brother" all they need to know already.

Just saw a show on TV where someone like "Mapquest" was able to turn over records of who printed out a map to a particular address in order to catch a murder suspect who had mailed the map to the cops as a way of finding a body.

Only the guilty fear law and order.

For those of you who have tried to log-in & have trouble, I believe that you need to set "cookies enabled" for Net54, using IE 6.0 (and higher). I had to disable some pop-up blockers, too.

I'm not sure if this is a permanent arrangement, in order to post on this board. If so, it kinda makes one vulnerable to spams and other bad things. I remember another Net54 discussion board, which was the source of a rather bad Trojan Horse. I had to block Net54.

I hope that this is not the case with this board.

Thanks,

steven

Whilst I support this move on the grounds of removing the trolls and other undesirables I do have one reservation. At least twice in the past 6 months when I have visited here I have been faced with the unpleasant prospect of either being denied access to ML (and presumably other Network54 hosted sites) or signing up to Network54 AND having to download GAIN spyware. There wasn't an option on this, the two events were linked. So can the ML team provide an assurance that I won't have to download any GAIN spyware in order to set up a Network54 account this time around?

Best regards

Andy
