There were a lot of names that a person could call Gabriella Zabini but weak was not one of them. Opinionated, bitchy, girly, all were good words to describe her. At this particular moment though, she felt like none of those. She did feel weak, or rather unlike herself. She felt like she was changing and it was a feeling that she didn't particularly care for. Grayson Mills wouldn't leave her mind. She felt like she had finally succumbed to being one of those pathetic girl with a schoolgirl crush. She had turned into someone who wanted to be around one particular boy.

The odd thing about this was that the guy in question rubbed her the wrong way. He was exactly the type of guy she hated and yet the more time she spent around the guy, the more she liked him. He cheesy pickup lines like asking if heaven missed her and things like that had grown on her. Now don't get her wrong, she still berated him for them any chance she got but it was mostly for show, something that she thought he was figuring out.

So, Gabriella was standing outside on the balcony looking down at the ground. The wind was blowing gently, causing her loose hair to blow around in the wind. Her long legs were bare under her short shirt, enjoying the warm breeze. How had things changed so drastically? It was dark and the moon was shining brightly in the sky, casting a glow around the grounds. Hearing someone approaching, she turned. A smile briefly danced on her face, lighting up her eyes before disappearing as quickly as it had appeared. "Don't tell me, your corny pickup lines aren't working so you've taken to stalking your prey?" She turned her back to him as she started to smile again. "I know I'm gorgeous and all but this is getting ridiculous." She chided him playfully.

There was an element of surprise when it came to Gabriella. She was strange, in a good way, which kept Grayson very much so on his toes. But more so he was surprised by how intrigued he was by her. He often got distracted with various girls, but lost interest as soon as his curiosities were satisfied, or after he had slept with them unless they proved to be incredibly interesting, but not with Gabriella. She had a lot to offer which he found irresistible. And so he had made it a bit of a habit to run into her.

On this occasion though it actually had not been on purpose. He had been hanging out on the fourth floor with a friend of his. They were talking about some clash in hushed tones and off to the side so Gabriella did not see him, but he saw her. He wasted very little time in ditching his friend to go to her, but didn’t think she would enjoy him calling out to her. Plus there was very little fun in that. So he followed shortly. He watched her head out onto the balcony. It was a game to him, but a sweet one.

He approached her slowly and quietly. She was beautiful. Not in the same way that others were. Aesthetically she had everything right, but even down to the way she stood. The way her personality was reflected in her body language Grayson found incredibly appealing. She wasn’t normal, but none of the best people were.

He thought he caught her smile, yet another surprise, but then he almost thought that might be wishful thinking. He laughed and joined her at the edge, “Well they have always worked for me, so I’m in a bit of new territory here. Is stalking not the way to go?” He cocked his head to the side, he had asked in an almost theatrical manner, smile on his face. Her next words made him laugh again. She was right, she was gorgeous, but it was actually the idea that his fawning over her was ridiculous. Because to him, that idea was ridiculous.

“Well if it bothers you all that much, maybe don’t be so gorgeous.” He cocked and eyebrow, teasing her, but in a flirty way. He looked out over the balcony, “Maybe try beautiful, or exquisite. Either of those would simply grab my attention…” He looked back at her, “…but gorgeous is simply irresistible.” He had never had any problem expressing his feelings. Most people did because they were afraid of rejection, but if that was a problem for Grayson no one would know. After all, Gabby cut him down every step of the way, and that only brought him back again.

“But If I had to venture guess I’d say you have no problem with me, otherwise you wouldn’t waste your precious time teasing me.” He was being cheeky, trying to draw a compliment out of her. He didn’t need it, but that would certainly be a sight to see.

Grayson had truly captivated her. She had found that his pick up lines didn't bother her as much anymore. Rowan had called her out on it the other day, the fact that a ridiculously huge smile came over her face when she talked about him, or rather when his name came up. She had resisted the urge to hex her and instead stormed off. It had given her a lot to think about but she refused to accept that she liked a guy...enough to consider a relationship with him. And she hated it.

To her, this was a sign of the first step. Step one: fall for a guy. Step two: date guy. Step three: fall in love with the guy. Step four: marry the guy. Then it all would lead to to the thing she feared the most...Step five: become a mindless drone that worships her husband. She was terrified of becoming that girl. The one who had no life outside of her husband. She was hoping that there was a way of balancing the two. Since meeting Grayson, she wasn't so sure she never wanted to settle down. She had opened her eyes to the other side. The side that didn't know if she wanted to watch all of her friends get married while she was alone.

Gabby turned back to face the grounds, amusement dancing in her eyes. He was impossible, but it was in a good way. A way that had her spell bound and intrigued. She would never be the type of girl that threw herself at a guy, it just wasn't for her. A guy would appreciate her or she wasn't going to bother. Her mouth twisted in thought for a moment, thinking back to the jealously she felt seeing him talking with Eva the other day.

Gabby turned to look at him, a mask carefully crafted on her face, one that she was beginning to think he could see behind, just as Demi, Rowan and Faith could. "Last I checked, you could be arrested for stalking someone." A smile crept up on her face. "Lucky for you, I can take care of myself." She smirked and turned around. She was actually flattered enough that he was bothering with her. As much as she loathed to admit it, she had feared that he had lost interest when talking with her roommate.

Gabby bit her lip as she listened to his words. She turned around, leaning against the balcony. "I like being gorgeous. Unless I wanted to disfigure myself, I don't think it's possible to be less gorgeous." She mused and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Besides, I think that would disappoint a lot of people, don't you?" She batted her eyelashes before she laughed, unable to stop herself.

"I wouldn't go that far!" She exclaimed. She shook her head, her earlier thoughts confirmed. He was beginning to truly know her. The way that she feared but in a way, part of her wanted him to know her. Wanted him to break through the layers and understand her. "Fine. I suppose you are growing on me. But as for having no problem? You're pick up lines annoy the hell out of me." She motioned for him to lean against the balcony with her. "I suppose you have some charm about you."

Grayson was drawn to Gabby in a quite possibly unhealthy way. He fancied himself in control when it came to most people. Not like he had to be in someone’s head, but it made him smile. He was a smart kid, even if some of his behavior didn’t suggest as such, but he had a weakness for troublesome girls. Grayson thought it could be the sort of thing where girls are supposedly drawn to bad boys. While in general, he wasn’t opposed to the sweet and innocent type, those he tended to linger around had something else there. Not necessarily rejection, or darkness, but just something that spiced it up. And he was more drawn to Gabby than most.

Maybe that was why he was trying so hard to impress her. He didn’t act like he was trying, or rather he acted like he was trying too hard in a painfully non chalant way. Like in the end it didn’t matter to him, like this was his way of entertaining himself, but it wasn’t just that. At least not with her. He didn’t know what to call it, but it was definitely different. But hey, he was always one for trying new things. He thought he caught her amusement, although he was sure that could also be at his expense just as likely as it was in his favor. Still, he didn’t mind.

He shot her a cockeyed smile, “I don’t doubt that one bit.” Gabby seemed anything but helpless. He had seen her out and about, watched her with her friends. Merlin, that sounded creepy once he thought about it. But she had peaked his interest and like something new to be learned dedication was very important.

She turned from him and he actually found himself making a pouting face behind her back. He wasn’t lying. Gabby was one hell of a sight to look at. Although, if he had to be completely honest it didn’t have to be her face. He was probably lucky she hard turned away really, since he was hardly hiding the fact that he was checking her out. Very closely. “Oh I absolutely think so. Really, I would be devastated.” Although he could settle for things less than gorgeous, he preferred her this way. Plus, he liked her confidence. It brought a smile to his face. He wasn’t unused to girls so sure of themselves, but many of them took awhile to cultivate it. He could remember being younger and that was part of what had drawn him to older girls. They knew they were phenomenal. Most girls his own age had only just begun to figure that out, but Gabby knew. And he liked that.

“Oh wouldn’t you?” Grayson sounded like he was trying to put words in her mouth. He chuckled as she commented on his pickup lines. “Well such beautiful girls should never be annoyed.” He was teasing her, doing exactly as she disliked. Well, it wasn’t a classic pick up line, but it was something. Shameless and silly compliments.

He joined her when she motioned for him, but he leaned his back against the edge. Looking at her. “I knew you’d admit it eventually.” He sounded as if he had won some grand argument, like it was worth celebrating. In fact, it kind of was, “I think I deserve a reward.” Although, in truth he had sort of been winning since he won their original bet of her not leaving him. But he wasn’t going to be keeping score that closely, not if it undermined him in any way, shape or form.

He put a finger to his chin and tapped it, “Now, what do I want…” He wasn’t even waiting for a response from her, he assumed it would be sassy and he was only teasing. Well mostly teasing. Well, kind of teasing.

There was something incredibly seductive about Grayson. It was like he had some sort of magnetic personality that captivated her and drew her in. She found herself missing him when he was gone, found herself jealous of her roommate for talking with him. It was all unnatural and new to her. It was unwelcome but somehow, she was starting to accept that there was a part of her that needed him. For what reason remained a mystery to her.

Conflicting emotions were plaguing her. She wanted to be bitchy and push him away, and yet, she wanted to sleep with him and get it over with. But her ego got in the way because he would be winning and she couldn't allow that. Everything needed to be on her terms. She glared out at the grounds as she stiffened. She hated this. She hated the internal battle that was flaring up inside of her. That she wanted to forget everything she had swore she would never do, throw caution to the wind, and just kiss someone that she was reluctantly developing feelings for. The worst part was, she had no clue of she was just another conquest or not.

Gabriella hid a smile at his though her eyes softened ever so slightly. "Good." She straightened her posture an one eyebrow lifted. "It would be a pity if you were clueless about it." She smiled and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear.

A smug smile came over her face as she imagined that his eyes were roaming over her behind her back. She was far from being a man hater, she enjoyed being admired, she just didn't want anyone to think that they owned her. Or that her life was revolved around a guy. She was much more than the one that sat around obsessing if she was good enough or if she were making a guy happy. She didn't want to be that girl. The one that was clueless without a guy. She was independent and smart. However, she liked being admired and her instincts were screaming that he was taking the opportunity to do just that. At his comment, she turned back around. "You wouldn't be the only one, and I much prefer myself like this."

"I definitely wouldn't go that far." She scowled at him. "Most people have at least something about them that I don't like. No ones perfect, not even you mister." Silently she groaned and shook her head, adding to cover up the back handed compliment. "You have more thank at people." It was far from being the truth. He annoyed her much less than most people. In a truly terrifying way, at least for her. "Like that." She spun around and met him face to face. "If you really meant that, than you would stop with the corny one liners." She even lifted her foot to stomp the ground but slowly let it fall back. She poked his chest and groaned. "You bring out the worst in me I swear!"

She haughtily brought her gaze up to his eyes. Those gorgeous eyes mesmerized her. She swallowed hard getting lost in them, her own features melting as she abruptly turned away from him. It was the first time that she had met his eyes and her confidence wavered. Her knees felt weak and she felt the bitchiness come to a head. "What kind of reward do you think you're going to get?" She mustered up. Her dark eyes turning to look at him. She was carefully to avoid his eyes.

A kiss? A voice in her mind brought up hopefully. She snorted, ignoring the way her heart starting beating faster. "Who said I was going to give you a reward?" She leaned beside of him, just a little closer than necessary, staring back at the grounds. "I think your ego is messing with your brain especially if you think that I'm some kind of trophy or some prize package to be won."

Grayson had known a lot of girls in his life. Some platonic, some not much so. He had spanned the gambit from wholesome girls looking for a friend to aggressively dark girls simply dealing with him. Nothing quite like Gabriella though. She was confidant, that had been clear from the start. She seemed like the type of girl who knew exactly where she wanted to be and what she wanted to be doing with her life. Like she had everything under control. Typically, the sort of person who wouldn’t come within ten feet of him unless they were bored and knew he’d pretty much take his clothes off on command. But she had stuck around, which was both satisfying to him as well as a feather in his cap.

“Well then, if you insist on staying the way you are you simply cannot complain when I show up. It isn’t really fair.” He sounded like he was pouting, like he was complaining about the injustice, but he couldn’t keep the corners of his mouth from turning up. It really wasn’t fair, although he wasn’t complaining. She was a pretty girl and he got to spend time with her, so it was a win for him.

“Oh yeah? Y’know most people say I’m absolutely perfect. A prince charming of sorts.” He chuckled, Grayson was cocky although not quite at that level yet. But it was fun messing with her, and at this point he figured she was going to take it. She poked his chest and he smiled, grabbing her hand. “I think it’s the best in you.” He was being honest. He liked the way she was. He thought about it often because she was a challenge and yet fun all wrapped up into one.

“I don’t know but it should be something good.” He pretended to think on it as he watched her. She certainly was flawless. He had seen pretty girls, but there was something special about her. He wasn’t sure if it was an actual something special or just the way she made his heart race. He wanted to pretend that wasn’t the case, because despite his antics he actually disliked genuine feelings. They complicated things, made them tricky. Because feelings meant being attached to someone, and eventually they would be gone, and that would suck. A lot. A Grayson avoided that to the best of his ability.

“I said you were going to give me a reward.” His voice had a twinge of arrogance, but a goofy smile softened it. He wasn’t above telling people what to do, but he never meant it in a harsh way. She leaned closer to him and he turned to lean with his side against the railing so he could face her. He listened to her words carefully. “You are a prize.”

She had been very clear with her thought process, and he had no intention of objectifying her. She was too dynamic for any of that. No. “But not one I fancy I could ever win.” There was a genuine statement from the mouth of Grayson Mills. It was a cheesy compliment, but he didn’t mean it like that. She had so much confidence and so much grace he didn’t think anyone would ever get to her the way that she feared. He wanted her, but not like that. She was the prize rose in the garden, that you take care of and nurture, rather than the trophy sitting on the shelf left to be ignored.

And that was when he decided to pull her close and kiss her. His hand fell to her waist. He really couldn’t resist. Not thinking about how magnificent she was. He wasn’t the cutesy type, not in reality. He liked his pick up lines and his compliments, and while he meant them at least partially they were more means to an end, and maybe it was like that at first with Gabriella. Maybe he just wanted to see how far he could push her, how much he could get into her head, but she had gotten in his. It was why he hadn’t made a serious move, because this was weirdly new territory for him and while he didn’t know if he was going to acknowledge it or not he liked her and didn’t want to fuck up.

When he broke the kiss his face still lingered by hers. The hand not on her waist had made it’s way up to her cheek and he simply held it. “I like you.” For a boy so fond of flowery, overly thought out, ways of saying the same thing this was simple. Because the matter was truly simple. He did like her.

A rather satisfied and accepting look came over her face. She could accept that. "I suppose you're right. I'm not becoming ugly so I suppose...I'm stuck with you following me around. I might not be opposed to you treating me like a queen." She was only teasing of course. That alone could very likely earn him a swift punch. "I suppose I can't control who follows me and who doesn't, however, if I wake up and your in my dorm at 3 am, you might not make it back to yours." She hesitated, her eyes darkening at the thought that he might not be there to see her.

Gabby scoffed. "Are they certifiably crazy? If they think you are Prince Charming, they must be off their rocker." Her eyes traveled down to his hand holding hers. His words filled her mind and she found herself slowly looking up at him. "I think you might need some professional help." She swallowed trying not to show how much his words meant to her. That her walls were slowly crumbling and the door that she had kept so tightly closed was beginning to open.

"Dream on, Romeo." She muttered as she tried not to think about the fact that she still hadn't jerked her hand from his grasp. She tried to ignore the feeling in the lit of her stomach and the way her heart pounded in her chest. This was unlike anything that she had ever experienced before. It was more than just wanting to get in his pants. She honestly hasn't really thought about sleeping with him. It had been more of the fact that she was unable to get him out of her mind.

Gabriella raised her eyebrows. "You may not have known me very long, but I take orders and commands from no one and certainly not from an arrogant prick." Her rage gave way as she spotted the goofy smile. "Damn you, Grayson! One of these days I swear I'm gonna punch you for your stupid, idiotic comments." She controlled her breathing as she stared at him. She hated what he had the ability to do to her. She looked down at her shoes as he spoke the last sentence. She couldn't figure out what to say to that, so for what seemed like the millionth time with him, she found herself speechless.

Her eyes lifted back to him and she shook her head. The truth of the matter was, he was closer than anyone else had ever been of winning her, as he so elegantly put it. She hated it, loathed it, and everything inside of her was telling her to push him away. To be the biggest bitch he had ever seen and drive him away once and for all. There was only one problem with that. She couldn't. It wasn't in her to say something that would truly hurt him, even if it meant she would end up hurt in the process.

She was just finding her words again when she was being pulled towards him. All traces of arrogance were gone and she didn't realize what was happening until his lips pressed against hers. Her eyes closed and she parted her lips as she kissed him back. It was unlike anything she had ever experienced before. It was a kiss that sent goosebumps flowing over her skin, one that took her breath and broke every last brick of her walls of defense crumbling around her.

Slowly she opened her eyes as she stared at him with wide eyes. His hand sent a warmth through her that was foreign to her. "I don't want to like you, Grayson. I hate this." For the first time, her eyes became vulnerable. "Please, if this is all just some game to you, you've won. Gloat and walk away. I can't take it if you don't." Her voice had a raw tone as her eyes pleaded with his. She didn't know if she could handle it if this had all been some sort of game, or a bet. "I like you too. More than I ever wanted to feel for any guy." She looked down at the floor and swallowed hard. She was in a completely new place and she had no clue what to do.

Grayson was a god friend and a good lover, but when the two combined into a relationship he was tragic at it. Mostly do to the fact that he hadn’t had an interest in one. He liked people, but he was also a smart asshole who got bored with people easily. It wasn’t really fair to enter into a relationship when he would be done with it soon enough. But he was eternally curious about Gabriella. She caught his attention in ways he couldn’t describe. His nerdish self compared her to the first books he had ever tried to read in other languages. He was obsessed with the pursuit and they were still some of his favorites, even though at this point many of them were at an elementary reading level. They captivated him. And yet they were nothing compared to Gabby.

“Please. You’d love it if I was in your dorm at 3 am. I would to.” She had told Grayson a surprising amount about herself, and he had been able to figure out a lot more. This was what he did, figure people out. With Gabby it was never enough though. But he had learned some very interesting facts about her.

She told him she did not take orders from anyone, and he wasn’t surprised. “You may not take orders, but I really don’t give up. And I never take no for an answer.” Gabby wouldn’t be nearly as interesting if she was subservient. It was exactly this about her that excited him. That didn’t mean he couldn’t have a little fun though. She swore at him and he erupted into laughter. “Why am I not so sure that’s gonna happen?” He shouldn’t push her, because frankly he wouldn’t be surprised if he did get punched, but he had to. He wouldn’t be him if he didn’t.

She kissed him back and it reminded him so much more of his first kiss than any of the numerous ones that had followed. He struggled with the idea of her being anything more than a pretty girl he liked to tease. He didn’t want it to be anything more because that was complicated and he was so against that. On the other hand he was smart enough to realize when he had lost a battle. He genuinely liked her. More than anyone else. She was beautiful and strong and sassy. She kept him on his toes while also being just predictable enough for him to know he hadn’t pushed her away. It was perfect. She was perfect.

He watched her face and it was decidedly different than he had ever seen her before. Although he had not known her long, he sort of guessed it was different than most people had seen her. And that made him smile. Despite her words, he was smiling. She was worried and he didn’t want to look happy, he certainly wasn’t happy about that. For all the shit that Grayson did, he didn’t want people to feel used by him. He had used people, but when it came down to it he was perfectly fine if they never knew that was the case.

He moved his arms and pulled her into a hug. A hug that may have involved his hand on her ass, but he couldn’t help it. “As much as I hate to admit it, this isn’t like that. You’re not a game to me.” He told her that with a chuckle, but it was the truth. He didn’t like feelings, really he detested them because they took the fun out of it usually. But he looked at her and all he could think was all the fun that was possible now, not what wasn’t.

Grayson had only a small amount of self control, ever, and really when it came to Gabby that was reduced to zero. He kissed her again. This time deeper and his hand ended up on the back of her head, pulling her into it. He didn’t want to stop. Not just like in five seconds, but ever. He didn’t want to stop ever. Because this was good. Better than he could ever have asked for.

If there was one thing that anyone knew about Gabriella Zabini is that she was determined not to fall into some routine of needing a man. She truly felt that her mother did that with her father and it was despicable. However, Grayson had her thinking other things. About how much she enjoyed their banter, and how she would never become her mother. Everything was pointing to the fact that Grayson had become something more than just an annoyance. He had somehow managed to become a friend and she wanted more from him. She wanted to open herself up but she was terrified.

She had wanted to sleep with him and be done with it but something had held her back. As much as she tried to tell herself it was because she had standards or some vague bullshit like that, it was because for the first time in her life, she saw herself with him. She cared more about him than just a one night stand. She smirked and looked off to the side. "I suppose I would, but walking into my dorm with my friends might not be the smartest suggestion. We have a reputation for a reason."

Gabby raised her eyebrows. "So in other words you are going to annoy me to death until I give in or hex you?" She tapped her chin playfully. "A swift kick might be interesting as well." She shook her head thoughtfully. "Nah, it would be much sweeter to watch you waste your breath on something that's never gonna happen."

She wasn't sure how she could get lost in something as simple as a kiss. This one made her feel a shock through her entire body. She just wanted to kiss him forever and melt into his arms. It was annoying and disgusting that she felt this way but absolutely perfect as well.

Anger flooded through her at the way he smiled at her words. Like it was all some sort of game to him. She had been nothing but a fool. A fool for letting herself get this close. Giving into him had been stupid and now her feelings were getting the best of her. She straightened up, her face beginning to harden into its carefully composed mask.

She was just fixing to give him a piece of her mind when he pulled her into a hug. She pressed her lips together as she listened to him. Her anger lessened at his words until he chuckled. She shoved him away and crossed her arms. Her eyes searching his. "You could sound like you mean it." She sighed and put her hands over her face. Frustration was mounting but as she peeked through her fingers, she could tell that he was being serious.

A small moan emitted from her as he kissed her again. She knew that it was all over for her now. She deepened the kiss and let her hand travel down his back. Pulling away for just a moment, she smiled. "You are infuriatingly charming." She kissed him back again, letting her fingers tangle in his hair.

It was funny really. The way life worked. Grayson considered himself someone who lived life to it’s fullest. He had friends who were quite dark and friends who believed in justice above all else. He drew no lines and created no bonds that couldn’t be broken. He had read about the twists and turns that life can take in a thousand books, but have never seen it come true until he met Gabby. She had not been someone he sought out, he did not see her from across the room. He did not mean to talk to her at all. And still it had happened and she had intrigued him in a way he couldn’t relate anything else to.

Grayson had very loose terms when it came to hooking up. He really didn’t care who it was, fuck. The gender didn’t even matter much to him. But he never forced it, never tried harder than his regular antics. And with Gabriella he hadn’t really tried at all. No, it was much more about trying to get her to admit she liked him. Something that, frankly, he never really cared all that much about before. “I’ve met some of your roommates.” One. To be exact. “I’m not concerned.” He added with a cocky smile.

“That is basically the plan.” He answered with a chuckle. He had no intention of giving up, it wasn’t in his nature. And besides, Gabriella was worth the trouble. He winced when she mentioned kicking him, “Oh let’s not to that.” Although frankly, it would probably only entertain him more, but was instantly relieved when she’d rather him waste his breath. “I’m gonna get to you Gabriella Zabini, you just wait.”

He watched her composure change. Anger had been something he had learned to recognize in many people, and as good at Gabby was at hiding herself he felt like it was less so as far as anger was concerned. Maybe that was only because he had seen it enough times. His own stance softened, a reaction as if his body wanted to let her know she didn’t have to be defensive.

“I could do a lot of things, but if I listened to all your advice I never would have gotten to kiss you.” He could also say something like he did mean it, or sound like someone not so much involved in a joke. But that wasn’t him. He could be romantic, he liked to actually, but when he felt relaxed he was going to run with that. She put her hands over her face and he smiled.

When he heard her moan he felt a jerk in every nerve in his body. The hand not in her hair found her lower back and pulled her as close as he possible could. He grabbed the fabric of her shirt tightly, like that would somehow make her closer. When she pulled away he had a microsecond of sadness, but smiled. “Yes. But it seems to have worked.” He grinned, but stopped when she kissed him again. His mouth had much better things to be doing than grinning. Her hand was in his hair and he shifted, pressing her up against the balcony. His hand was between her back at the railing, he could feel it digging into his knuckles but Grayson didn’t care. The only feeling he cared about was her hands on him.
