Here you go, Falc. We're finally at Week 12, the rematch with the Browns, and our opportunity to pick any franchise for our regularly scheduled futility comparison. On this Thanksgiving week it's only fitting that we take on the Lions.

No, neither of these cats can hunt. But it's the Bengal kitties that run from their prey (a winning season) at a far faster sprint. See tables below.

Bengals and Lions Stats

Quick Points

- The Lions bad decade was 2001-2010. They managed to stalk their way to an in-the-hunt average of 20%. The Bengals bad decade was 1991-2000. As we discuss every week, that one reached a roaring average of 12%. (All percentages are adjusted.)

- The Lions good decade was 1991-2000 at 69%. The Bengals "good" decade was 2001-2010 at 48%.

- Yeah, the Bengals were better over the past 10 years. Let's throw a big party.

- William Clay Ford, Jr., with all of his inept teams, is still in a different league than Mike Brown. The Lions averaged 45% over the past 20 years, the Bengals 30%.

- I wouldn't write home about the Lions performance, but at least they gave their fans nine seasons where they lingered in the hunt for 10 weeks or more. The Bengals gave us four.

Overview of "In the Hunt" Futility Stats

- Each week we parallel the regular season and compare the Bengals one-on-one to the current 2011 opponent. The exceptions are the bye week and the rematch weeks against divisional foes when we pick other teams to benchmark.

- Weeks "in the hunt for a winning season" serves as a rough proxy for playoff contention. And thus for fans' hopes and happiness. We ultimately want a championship, right?

- To be in the hunt, a team can be no more than one game below .500 with no more than seven losses.

- During the season, a team can fall out of the hunt and then climb back in.

- An example running won-loss record for five weeks: 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-3. This team was in the hunt after Weeks 1, 2, 3, and 5 (total = 4).

- Bye weeks are counted like any other week in the season. For example, the Bungs get a freebie if a bye comes while they're still in it. Why? This is all about the fans' experience. (By the way, there were two byes in '93.)

- Adjusted "percent weeks in the hunt" throws out the first week, as all teams get an automatic freebie.

- The time period covers Mike Brown's ownership on the Cincinnati Bengals franchise, counting only complete seasons (1991-2000).

- Tables compiled from data on pro-football-reference.com.

"Here you go, Falc."

cough. Jesus. I just swallowed my gum I was chewing.

Henry Clay Ford, JR is better than Mike F*cking Brown. Even in the Millen Years.

Good lord. Too bad the Bungles aren't playing the Saints or Buccaneers.

In 1995 how were the Lions 9-7 but only in the hunt for 8 weeks?

Besides that the Wayne Fontes era was better than people remember. They were in it all but two or three Fontes seasons.

That does seem strange, doesn't it? That was the era when the Lions were one of the most erratic teams of all time. Streaky as all get-out. Here's how the season went, week to week, with Won-Loss record in parentheses. Terrible start with a great finish. Last column shows the running total of weeks in the hunt.

Maybe I missed something, I don't think the Bungs are playing the Lions this week.

W2L, it's Browns week for the second time this season, and so we already ran that comparison. We picked a team that was off the schedule. Falc had requested the Lions.

We'll have the same situation for both Steelers Week II and Ravens Week II. I'm taking suggestions for those weeks, by the way.

"Carolina Panthers."

Oh yeah--I'll bet that one will be good....and so will the Saints other than the last 2 years.
