The Perpetual Marvin Lewis Hot Seat Roundup

The national scribes keep putting Marvin Lewis on the imaginary hot seat. He continues to keep his job. Another year goes by. The Bungles again fail to win a playoff game. Another spate of commentary arrives heralding his warm backside. Nary a peep of factual evidence accompanies the drivel. Mike Brown remains monolithic, unbending, unyielding. The cycle repeats itself, again and again and again.

As Hook would say, pure comedy gold.

It seems so clear now. SI's Don Banks claiming that 2016 is a "slam dunk" for heat puts it all into focus. This is the thread. We've cited examples for years and they're all over the forum. Let's collect them all in one place. A virtual Hall of Shame for clueless scribes who refuse to treat Mike Brown as the unmistakable sui generis that he is. We'll keep a listing here of everyone who makes the claim, along with dates of occurrence. (To be perpetually updated with examples past and future.) Individual quotations will come in subsequent posts. No restrictions on the time frame.

To be serious for a moment, the question is: Are they clueless about Mike Brown or just too damn lazy to write something that falls outside of the cliches? Much easier to write another cookie cutter article about coaches on the hot seat. The big name journalists are as guilty as anybody else.

Just a quick question psycho, this is a little off topic but at the end of all your posts where it says what MB should have said versus what he did say, what was it that he said? The what he did say link is dead.

Hm. I'll have to fix that link. I can't find the full quote anywhere right now, but here is a facsimile.

"Quarterbacks are like queen bees. You can only have one before they start crawling all over each other, and we have ours."

MB was answering a question about bringing Mike Vick in as a backup to Carson Palmer, way back when.

NFL hot seat rankings: Another coach suddenly in jeopardy?
Nate Davis - USA TODAY Sports - 4:21 p.m. EDT November 1, 2016

As the NFL season reaches its midpoint, the rumor mill regarding coaches who could be in trouble is starting to get cranked up as more and more owners get cranky with the state of their franchises. Without further hesitation, here's the latest installment of our weekly hot seat rankings: ...

4. Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals: He's got the healthiest team in the AFC North, but that translated to all of one win in October. Heading into their bye week, the Bengals have a golden opportunity to regroup before embarking on what appears to be a favorable second-half schedule. If not, ownership may no longer look favorably upon Lewis. Last week: 3

Mike Brown will always look favorably upon, and never fire, Marvin Lewis.

I would wake up and be a multimillionaire tomorrow before that happened. Mikey isn't geared to generating championship teams or he would have done it by now. Winning isn't real high on his priorities list.

Psycho, I still feel Marvin could lose his job but only if he has a bad year this year and most likely next year too. I understand your point, but there is one thing that Mike Brown loves that he might be willing to part with Marvin over - money. Two down seasons and lagging ticket sales may force him into action. That's how we got rid of Bratkowski for instance. We'll see. I just don't see Marvin sticking around for another rebuilding - which is what this team might need.

Katie, I do recall Dick LeBeau getting canned after only two years, under a scenario much like what you're describing: season ticket holders bailing, corporate holders of club seats bailing, et cetera. The thing with that, though, was that it literally took the fans a dozen years to get there. The Bungs only playoff run in that span was a half-asst effort that ended with a 6-10 record. That was followed by the worst season in franchise history -- two wins in 2002.

With all the flak we like to throw at Marvin Lewis, it's clear he can work with Mike Brown in a semi-functional way. Well enough to achieve middling success. And we know that Cincinnati fans, being the sheeple that they are, will not revolt under those circumstances.

Thus, Mike Brown will never fire Marvin Lewis.

Maybe a little warm, according to this scribe.
11 NFL head coaches on the hot seat, ranked from warm to scorching
Brett Smiley - Fox Sports - 11-02-2016

Hand on the stove just to see how it feels: Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals (3-4-1)
It’s a similar story here. It’s not that Lewis is doing a worse job this season; the Bengals aren’t cruising to another playoff berth because the personnel is trending downward due to age and free agency departures, combined with several offseason coaching departures, namely former offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. The Bengals have a bye week after their tie in London to rest up before embarking on a manageable slate of games to get back to the playoffs. If that doesn't happen, owner Mike Brown may look to let go of Lewis to give the organization a jolt just like the Giants let go of successful head coach Tom Coughlin last offseason.

Nope, it's ice cold. And it will stay ice cold, even if the Bungs fail to make the playoffs. Mike Brown will never look to give the organization a jolt, and he will never fire Marvin Lewis.

The fans that go to the game that is. Mikey doesn't care that much about the fans that don't go to the games. Have to agree with Kate - when the money starts to go down then mikey will act. He needs the money to pay players, FA's, high draft picks and that tiny front office of his. Hard to put a % of fans not going to games or % of luxury boxes not being renewed or how long those conditions will last before it becomes unbearable. The only clue we have is when LeBeau was in control and the bungs went 2-14 in 2002 and attendance was down 30% or so. That lasted about 2 years so that might give you a sense of time.
