The national scribes keep putting Marvin Lewis on the imaginary hot seat. He continues to keep his job. Another year goes by. The Bungles again fail to win a playoff game. Another spate of commentary arrives heralding his warm backside. Nary a peep of factual evidence accompanies the drivel. Mike Brown remains monolithic, unbending, unyielding. The cycle repeats itself, again and again and again.

As Hook would say, pure comedy gold.

It seems so clear now. SI's Don Banks claiming that 2016 is a "slam dunk" for heat puts it all into focus. This is the thread. We've cited examples for years and they're all over the forum. Let's collect them all in one place. A virtual Hall of Shame for clueless scribes who refuse to treat Mike Brown as the unmistakable sui generis that he is. We'll keep a listing here of everyone who makes the claim, along with dates of occurrence. (To be perpetually updated with examples past and future.) Individual quotations will come in subsequent posts. No restrictions on the time frame.

Marvin Lewis made call, left clues he'd walk away
Paul Dehner Jr. - Cincinnati Enquirer - 2:43 p.m. ET Dec. 17, 2017 | Updated 4:35 p.m. ET Dec. 17, 2017

The Bengals were surprised by Marvin Lewis opting not to enter negotiations with the team and seek opportunities elsewhere on Sunday. When Adam Schefter dropped the bomb on ESPN, everyone in the organization learned along with the rest of the country.

Ownership to assistant coaches were all hit with the surprise. As Lewis pointed out after the game, even he was taken by surprise as he denied the report, claiming he has yet to make a decision for next year.

The surprise isn't that Lewis would leave on his own accord, though, rather the timing of the news breaking.

Lewis did not have a contract for next season and both sides have expressed enough respect for each other through the years that to think a “firing” would happen was always folly. The Bengals were preparing themselves for a potential coaching search. Lists have been in place for a long time.

If the coach opted to make clear his desire to walk away now, it would offer an advantage to both sides of the decision. First, Lewis controls the message of leaving on his own accord and makes clear his desire to pursue other opportunities. Whether in a front office, with the NFL or picking up another head coaching job, there will be chances to move on. At 59 years old, he’s still relatively young by coaching standards. There are currently seven coaches older than Lewis, with Seattle’s Pete Carroll the oldest at 65.

From the Bengals side, Lewis making his intention clear allows them a head start on potential replacement candidates. With as many as 10 coaching vacancies possible, there could be a shortage of quality replacements. Any jump on the process could be advantageous for a franchise that won’t top the list of most desirable or lucrative landing spots.

But make no mistake, this would be a Marvin Lewis decision. Would the Bengals ownership actually sign him back? Only Mike Brown knows and he was not offering comment. If he still chooses to not enter negotiations, Lewis makes clear there was no reason to even start the conversation. The time had come. Those paying attention could read the writing on the wall for this decision and it started two years ago.

When discussion of the future with close friend Hue Jackson began following the 2015 season playoff debacle against Pittsburgh, the first clue dropped.

As part of the negotiations with Jackson and the Bengals while the coordinator pursued his job with the Cleveland Browns the idea was floated and in serious discussion, Jackson would become the coach-in-waiting for the Bengals and eventually take over following the 2018 season.

Jackson opted to pass on the offer.

"That's Marvin's football team. Been there a long time," Jackson in 2016. "I think it's hard to ever replace a best friend that way and be there waiting behind. I didn't think it was the right thing for me to do. I didn't think it would be right for their team.”

Still, at that point, the 2018 timeline was first put in place. Lewis did sign what turned out to be the last of his rolling one-year extensions in April of 2016 that locked him in with the club through the end of the 2017 season.

As this year rolled into the offseason, however, the clearest sign this would be the final year and Lewis desired an exit strategy came to fruition. For the first time since the 2010 season, Lewis did not sign a rolling extension, leaving him a lame duck entering the season.

The urgency in this season was evident when for the first time in the 50-year history of the club the team made a coordinator change during the season, letting go of Ken Zampese after the Week 2 loss against Houston.

The fan base quickly turned as toxic as any point when losses piled up. Signs calling for change were hung and torn down prior to three of the last four home games.

Also, reports surfaced Lewis altered the schedule of the Marvin Lewis Community Fund this offseason, not scheduling out his standard events beyond the end of this season. MLCF has been a staple of the coach’s tenure in Cincinnati, awarding nearly 100 college scholarships over the course of his time with the team and launching the universally praised Learning Is Cool program.

During the Monday Night Football game against the Steelers, play-by-play man Sean McDonough mentioned the impression he received from Lewis during their weekly production meeting in preparation for the game.

“He (Lewis) was pretty candid when we spoke with him yesterday. You almost got the feeling that he is anticipating this is going to be his last year,” McDonough said.

As the writing was placed on the wall this season would not amount to more than playing out the string, Lewis avoided any talk of his future in Cincinnati, refusing to comment to local media as recently as Friday after practice, but did let slip one final clue during his press conference this past Wednesday.

He was asked about Mike Zimmer stating it would be a “tremendous loss” if Lewis left. The response perked up ears at the time, but proved more prophetic than most could have realized in the moment.

“We all realize when you sign up for these jobs the thing is, it's not forever,” Lewis said. “I think we all accept that."

After this Schefter news bomb on Sunday morning and denial, we are left to wonder if Lewis has accepted it.

Dammit, I missed the boat on Daugherty's premature eulogy as well. I wonder if I have it cached.

EDIT: Nope. It only goes to show. You can never be too cynical when you follow this team.

I realize that everybody thinks it's a done deal and that Marvin is just being a stubborn old cuss (like somebody else we know), but let's see where this goes.
Quick hits: Marv won’t call it last PBS game; Vigil to IR
Geoff Hobson - Bengals.com - December 22, 2017

No, Marvin Lewis has no emotions about Sunday (1 p.m.-Cincinnati’s Channel 19) in what is reportedly his last game at Paul Brown Stadium as Bengals head coach.

“Could be. Could not be,” said Lewis said after Friday’s walk-through. “I don’t think about it like that. I’ve not thought about it like that.”

It will his 123rd game at PBS (70-50-2), his 246th game (123-119-3) overall, 239th in the regular season (123-112-3).

And no emotion…

“I don’t worry about it being the last time. It doesn’t cross my mind,” Lewis said. “All right?”

Yes, even Hobson is on the list now. I this thing turns on a dime, I'll be retrospectively adding to this thread for a loooong time.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard Giggle's son is employed by the team in some capacity and that Marvin wants him to get a firm hold on a football career before retiring. Might this have something to do with Giggle's hedging on his future? Anyone else hear this story?

I seem to remember us talking about and speculating about that previously. It makes a ton of sense, and if Marcus Lewis can move up into another level into an assistant coach position, he'll practically "be made". Another year or two under his father could make that much more of a sure thing.

The Brown family most definitely has nothing against nepotism.

I've been neglecting this thread because I'm dreading all the time it will take to update it with all the scribes' wrong expectations. It will all start tomorrow when Mike and Marvin have their end-season talk.

Their record improved this year, going from 6-9-1 in 2016 to 7-9 here in 2017. Mike Brown is always looking for improvement, within boundaries.

The Bungs won their last two games and knocked two teams out of the playoffs. Both of those teams finished the season with winning records. One was a division opponent (on the road). They did it with a patchwork offensive line, moving a guard out to Left Tackle and starting a washed-up old warhorse at Right Tackle. They also used two greenhorn guards at Right Guard. On defense, their roster was depleted, especially at linebacker.

This is all red meat for Mike Brown. He probably can't wait to re-sign Marvin Lewis about now.

EDIT: Remember that win against Buffalo early in the season? They beat a playoff team.

Quick hiits: Lewis says he'd like to be back; Boyd silences city
Geoff Hobson - Bengals.com - December 31, 2017

BALTIMORE _ If this was Marvin Lewis’ last game as Bengals head coach, no one could tell in the wake of the stunning 31-27 victory over the Ravens secured on Andy Dalton’s fourth-and-12 TD pass that that went for a 49-yard catch-and-run to wide receiver Tyler Boyd.

Yes, he was emotional.

But …

“Everybody was emotional after the kind of season we’ve had,” said left end Carlos Dunlap.

“Yeah, he was emotional,” saids wide receiver Brandon LaFell. “Especially after beating his old team."

Lewis, his contract up, said after the Bengals finished 7-9 with two straight wins that he wants to coach this team next year for a 16th season. But he also said some decisions have to be made when he meets with Bengals president Mike Brown Monday morning.

He indicated he would have to discuss some other issues besides just returning. Asked who makes the decisions Lewis said, “I would think it starts with ownership.” But when asked if he’d accept if Brown offered a deal he paused.

“It’s more complicated than that," he said.

As I said in another thread, Mike Brown will make a few very minor concessions and give Marvin a new contract.

While we're at it, let's visit with Paul "Hedge" Daugherty again.
Doc: Cincinnati Bengals close sour season on sweet note by knocking out Baltimore Ravens
Paul Daugherty - Cincinnati Enquirer - 8:13 p.m. ET Dec. 31, 2017 | Updated 8:35 p.m. ET Dec. 31, 2017

The local grim reapers finished 2017 by knocking the Ravens and Detroit out of the playoffs in successive weeks.

It was a fine tribute to the coach who built the house and now will be handing its mortgage to the next caretaker. (Unless of course, Lewis, Mike Brown and family decide Monday to reprise 2010, in which case all words here are off.)

Yeah, parenthetically, if Marvin is retained, as if we didn't know that would happen all along. Or should have known.

As Daugherty is known to do, he posted a column (see above), changed his mind, pulled it down, and put up a rewrite. The new one is much, much more appropriate. Here's the whole thing, in case he changes his mind again.
Doc: Is Marvin Lewis 3.0 on the horizon for the Bengals? I hope not, for all involved.
Paul Daugherty - Cincinnati Enquirer - 8:13 p.m. ET Dec. 31, 2017 | Updated 11:09 p.m. ET Dec. 31, 2017

He took the impossible job and made it possible. – Former Bengals cornerback Artrell Hawkins
<font size="2" face="Times Roman">
BALTIMORE – So this whole strange and awkward, weird and confusing season of wonder comes to a halt Monday morning. Marvin Lewis and Mike Brown and esteemed others, having a talk about Lewis’ future. Will he leave or won’t he?

We’ve packed him up all season. We’ve all but signed for the moving van. Lewis has been so eulogized, he’s checking his pulse and fogging makeup mirrors.

Will he or won’t he?

The Bengals played a pretty good game here Sunday, winning 31-27 against a Ravens team with the motivation of more games in January. The Bengals won by the rarest of happenings, a 90-yard drive at winning time, Good Andy Dalton throwing 49 yards for a TD to Tyler Boyd. . . on 4th and 12 with 49 seconds to play. That’s not exactly commonplace.

That made it two teams in a row the local grim reapers have knocked from the postseason. Everyone was happy in the visiting locker room, but beware the Ides of December. Late-season wins aren’t always what they seem. The ’01 Bengals won their last two, then went 2-14 in ’02. Every season is new and different, Lewis likes to say.

Will he or won’t he?

Three weeks ago, we had Lewis on the 5:15 to Anywhere. He might have had himself there, too. Fifteen years in one town is a couple lifetimes in the NFL. Coming off 10 consecutive quarters of bad football, it looked safe to assume Lewis had done all he could do here, and he knew it.

Now? Now, the Bengals beat the Lions and Ravens and Lewis is suggesting it was the injuries that were to blame. "We were down some guys," he said. "Over these two to three weeks, they’ve grown up a little bit."

"Our guys are going to fight to the end," Lewis continued. Except when they don’t. The loss to the Bears was empty enough even Dave Lapham, on the air, accused the team of quitting.

Generally after games, it’s easy to tell what Lewis wants the message to be. Most of his players repeat it. After this game, they all said this:

We play for ourselves. We play for pride and respect and yeah, money. Contracts are not guaranteed.

They said they have not been told anything. "I'll know when y’all know," Michael Johnson said. Said Dre Kirkpatrick, "We’re still players. They mostly keep it away from us. I’m not into that front office stuff."

I believe that. Pro athletes are far too self-interested to be overly concerned with the job status of their head coach. If anything, they’re far more connected to their position coaches. As Vinny Rey said, “I wanted to win one for (linebackers coach Jim) Haslett.’’

Will he or won’t he?

For every Ravens W this year, there was a Bears L. A team that tuned in quickly was capable of tuning out just as fast. Injuries? Every team has injuries. The best overcome them. The Bengals hurts didn’t pile up until later in the year.

The finish was great, until you consider there are lots of fans at this very moment bitching about sliding down Round 1 of the draft. And, more ominously, hoping the late-year lightning doesn’t mean Lewis is coming back. If Lewis returns, no PR campaign in the world will have sufficient spin to soothe savage partisans.

Will he or won’t he?

“I dunno,’’ Lewis said.

"We’ll see," Lewis said.“Decisions to be made."

Whose decisions, he was asked.

“First would be ownership,’’ Lewis said.

If ownership offers, Lewis will accept, unless he has something equally lucrative already lined up. He’s not going to make millions being someone’s general manager. And he has never said anything other than he still wants to coach.

Will he or won’t he?

Maybe Marvin’s legacy is that he has one. Mike Brown doesn’t share the quick-trigger temperament of many NFL owners. He allowed Lewis a second act, after the 4-12 disaster of 2010, and he came through with better-than-average results.

Are we about to see 3.0?

I hope not, for all involved. Lewis, the BrownTrust, you. The mountain Brown assigned Lewis to move has been moved. The effort was remarkable and should forever be respected. It’s a new mountain now.

Will he or won’t he?

Lewis wasn’t saying. He left the press conference offering the familiar Marvin Lewis cackle. Heh-heh-heh.

The Dead Cat Bounce knocked two teams out of the playoffs, so Psycho may end up being correct as Marvin himself says he still wants to coach here and players are vouching for him. I can see Mike Brown thinking another year with Marvin, Lazor, and some better draft picks (but no needed FAs of course) could make a difference. I don't see Marvin signing a one year deal necessarily, though. I think he would want a two year deal for security which means that Mike Brown would probably keep him the full two years. Marvin says "it's complicated" and that they'll discuss it tomorrow which leads me to believe Marvin probably wants certain things - perhaps more control? Who knows? I guess we'll find out tomorrow. My prediction was that it would probably take a couple down years to get Marvin fired, but because of how this year has ended, it might take another year at this point. That of course ignores all the playoff losses. Psycho and I have been debating all season - we're about to find out.
