Week 14 Snap Judgments
Don Banks - Patriots.com - Sunday, December 10, 2017 8:53 PM EST

If Mike Brown has a brain, that should definitely seal the deal for Marvin Lewis in Cincinnati, with his Bengals losing 33-7 at home to the punchless Bears. Cincinnati (5-8) looked dazed and confused all day, as if it still had a hangover from that brutally physical Monday night home loss to Pittsburgh.

In all reality, both coaches involved in Sunday’s surprising blowout at Paul Brown Stadium are likely gone. Chicago’s John Fox has won just 13 games in his almost-three seasons with the Bears, and the writing is on the wall for the guy who led both Carolina and Denver to the Super Bowl.

At least Chicago saw flashes of what the Mitchell Trubisky draft pick was designed to produce. Trubisky was a precise 25 of 32 in the rout, throwing for 271 yards and one touchdown without an interception. For once he let it rip, and stopped playing with the training wheels on.

With running back Jordan Howard plowing for 147 yards rushing and two scores, and Tarik Cohen adding 80 more yards on the ground, the Bears looked like a big-league offense for a change. The 33 points were Chicago’s season high. Before Sunday the Bears had topped 20 points only three times all year.

http://www.patriots.com/news/2017/12/10 ... -judgments
John Fox is imminently more likely to be gone than Marvin Lewis, because Marvin Lewis isn't going anywhere.

Nate Davis moves Marvin Lewis up to #1 on his list, which we knew was inevitable. It was also inevitable that he would claim that the head coach being gone was inevitable.
NFL hot seat rankings: Bengals' Marvin Lewis, Bears' John Fox coaching out the string?
Nate Davis - USA TODAY Sports - 7:26 p.m. ET Dec. 12, 2017

Let's begin with that rarest of phrases: "Bravo, Browns."

Hue Jackson may be careening toward just the second 0-16 season in NFL history, but he deserves the opportunity to coach Cleveland with the assistance and wisdom of a competent front office, and new GM John Dorsey has the bona fides to build one in the wake of the franchise's analytics cataclysm.

That said, we'd expect Jackson — owner Jimmy Haslam announced he'll be back next year — to have only a moderate amount of rope in 2018 given there is obvious talent on this roster and the typical tendency new general managers have for wanting to anoint their own coach.

Moving on, here's the latest installment of our weekly hot seat rankings:

1. Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati Bengals: His undisciplined, inconsistent, underperforming team followed Week 13's implosion against Pittsburgh by laying down at home for the lowly Bears. Lewis' assessment: “I’m at a loss of words today.” Cincy's briefly flickering playoff hopes are now permanently doused, and it's all but inevitable that Lewis is finishing out his contract with no hope for another one. Maybe he can join Jackson's staff next year. Last week: 3

The only thing that's really inevitable is Marvin Lewis being here next year.

If that happens look for more of the same. It'll prove to me that only is mikey very resistant to change but lacks vision and imagination to come up with a different direction. If he were ceo of a business it would probably fail.

Daugherty: In final three Bengals games, who cares and who doesn't?
Paul Daugherty - Cincinnati Enquirer - 7:34 p.m. ET Dec. 14, 2017 | Updated 10:17 a.m. ET Dec. 15, 2017

... The Bengals are gassed. Their season is a disappointment. Their coach is in limbo. They’re not accustomed to losing a lot in the regular season. Maybe they sense the end of an era, or maybe they’re too concerned for their own jobs to think about that. Regardless, 2017 has been “a strange season," just as A.J. Green described. ...

There's no real limbo here, folks. Nothing more than limbo theater.

Report: Marvin Lewis to leave Bengals after season
Michael David Smith - Pro Football Talk - December 17, 2017, 10:18 AM EST

After 15 seasons in Cincinnati, Marvin Lewis is moving on.

Lewis will leave the Bengals after this season, ESPN reported this morning.

That’s no surprise: Lewis did a good job turning the Bengals around early in his tenure in Cincinnati, but more recently he has struggled, with two straight losing seasons. And Lewis still hasn’t won a playoff game.

But the ESPN report suggested that it’s more Lewis who wants to move on from the Bengals than the Bengals who want to move on from Lewis. One sticking point, according to the report, is that Lewis believes his assistants have been “treated unfairly financially.” Bengals owner Mike Brown has been accused of pinching pennies in the past, and the report indicates that Lewis and the coaching staff are sick of it.

It’s unclear whether Lewis could coach anywhere else in 2018, or who the Bengals may hire. But it looks like for the first time since Dick LeBeau was fired after the 2002 season, Cincinnati is looking for a new head coach.

Now the Enquirer is confirming the story.
Marvin Lewis surprises Bengals by opting not to return in 2018
Jim Owczarski and Paul Dehner Jr. - Cincinnati Enquirer Published - 10:25 a.m. ET Dec. 17, 2017 | Updated 11:48 a.m. ET Dec. 17, 2017

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Enquirer learned that multiple members of the Cincinnati Bengals organization, including coaches, who just got on the team buses to U.S. Bank Stadium for their 1 p.m. ET against the Minnesota Vikings, learned along with the rest of the nation that head coach Marvin Lewis has decided to not enter contract negotiations to coach the team in 2018 after his contract expired.

The Bengals currently have no comment on the news.

ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the decision.

Sources close to Lewis have told The Enquirer he remains interested in coaching in 2018 and does not plan to retire.

Lewis and the Bengals did come to terms on a contract extension in the offseason, leaving him without a contract beyond the season for the first time since 2010. Following that year after days of tenuous discussion, Lewis opted to return and "reboot" the franchise. They drafted A.J. Green and Andy Dalton, then reeled off five consecutive playoff berths. All ended in first-round defeat, running Lewis' playoff record to 0-7.

All of the Bengals' assistant coaches have expiring contracts as well, which means the team could begin moving forward with head coaching interviews for defensive coordinator Paul Guenther and special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons, or hoping to lock up some up-and-coming position coaches.

When asked on Friday if there was a way he could ease this situation for his assistant coaches, Lewis balked at the idea it was necessary.

"There is no need to ease that way," he said, "they are good coaches they will be fine."

Since Lewis will be looking for work in 2018, it's possible he brings some current assistants with him to a new team.

Heading into Sunday, Lewis is 123-111-3 in the regular season with the Bengals and 0-7 in the postseason.

At 15 seasons, Lewis is the second-longest tenured head coach in the NFL behind New England's Bill Belichick.

The possibility of Lewis walked away was always in play, but when asked on Friday before the national report broke if he had already made a decision he said to a group of three local reporters, "I’m not going to tell you."

He was asked why not?

"Because it’s not about me," Lewis said. "My future is one day."

Lewis said Friday he had not had a conversation with owner Mike Brown about the topic at that point, but they do still talk every day.

One week at a time.

"At some point, we will have a conversation," Lewis said.

This is a very odd way to go about it. News leaking out right before a game is to start. Looking forward to hearing the commentary during the game which will start in about 45 minutes..

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis plans to leave team, explore other opportunities
Adam Schefter - ESPN - 11:24 AM CT

fter 15 seasons in Cincinnati that have made him the longest-tenured head coach in franchise history, Marvin Lewis is planning to leave the Bengals after this season to pursue opportunities elsewhere, league sources told ESPN.

As he has done in the past, Lewis willingly opted to enter 2017 on the final year of his contract, but unlike other years, this time he is planning to leave Cincinnati, sources said.

With a flurry of head-coaching openings expected in the coming weeks and a shortage of obvious head-coaching candidates with experience, Lewis is likely to be on teams' short lists of candidates, league sources said.

If a head-coaching job does not materialize, sources said Lewis would be interested in working in another team's front office or as a coaching adviser for a former Bengals assistant coach who has gone on to become a head coach, such as Mike Zimmer, whose Minnesota Vikings host the Bengals on Sunday.

Lewis dismissed the report prior to Sunday's game, telling Bengals.com there was "nothing to it."

Not only is Lewis' contract up, but so are those of most, if not all, of the Bengals' assistant coaches. The Bengals have declined to give contract extensions to their assistant coaches, and some are unhappy with the way they have been treated financially, sources said.

Amid the uncertainty and potential change, the Bengals are likely to undergo a major overhaul to their coaching staff. Some assistants could wind up staying, but many are expected to leave along with Lewis.

When Lewis leaves the Bengals, it will mark the end of a chapter in which Cincinnati returned to prominence but failed to advance in the postseason.

When he accepted the job on Jan. 14, 2003, the Bengals were one of the NFL's laughingstock franchises, coming off the worst season in franchise history. Lewis beat out Tom Coughlin and Mike Mularkey for the job and almost immediately remade and elevated the roster.

Lewis helped make the Bengals relevant again, but he never led the team to a postseason win. His seven playoff losses, each as disappointing as the next, made Lewis the only head coach in history to lose his first seven postseason games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

But Lewis has compiled a 123-111-3 record that, at a time in which the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens have been among the NFL's elite franchises, was good enough to win the AFC North four times.

The Bengals' 2017 season has been defined by disappointment and injuries. When the 5-8 Bengals face the Vikings, they will be without starting cornerbacks Adam Jones, who is on injured reserve, and Dre Kirkpatrick, who has a concussion. Bengals linebackers Vontaze Burfict (concussion), Kevin Minter (hamstring) and Nick Vigil (ankle) also are out. They are expected to get safety Shawn Williams back from a hamstring injury.

The national scribes keep putting Marvin Lewis on the imaginary hot seat. He continues to keep his job. Another year goes by. The Bungles again fail to win a playoff game. Another spate of commentary arrives heralding his warm backside. Nary a peep of factual evidence accompanies the drivel. Mike Brown remains monolithic, unbending, unyielding. The cycle repeats itself, again and again and again.

As Hook would say, pure comedy gold.

It seems so clear now. SI's Don Banks claiming that 2016 is a "slam dunk" for heat puts it all into focus. This is the thread. We've cited examples for years and they're all over the forum. Let's collect them all in one place. A virtual Hall of Shame for clueless scribes who refuse to treat Mike Brown as the unmistakable sui generis that he is. We'll keep a listing here of everyone who makes the claim, along with dates of occurrence. (To be perpetually updated with examples past and future.) Individual quotations will come in subsequent posts. No restrictions on the time frame.

Marvin Lewis denies ESPN report that he’s stepping down as Bengals head coach at end of season
If the Bengals want to move on from Marvin Lewis they may need to make that decision without Lewis’ consent.
Rebecca Toback - Cincy Jungle - December 17, 2017 4:18 pm

After ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported this morning that Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis would step away from the team following the conclusion of the 2017 season, Lewis denied the report following an embarrassing 34-7 Bengals loss to the Vikings on Sunday.

Marvin Lewis told team to not be concerned about the report before the game and didn't think it had an impact on the game.
3:19 PM - Dec 17, 2017

Lewis laughed off the rumor and said he hasn’t made a decision about his future following the 2017 season in his post-game press conference.

It seems as though the Bengals have given up on Lewis, though he claims he doesn’t think the report of him parting ways with the team, which surfaced about two and a half hours before kickoff on Sunday, impacted the team’s results. That’s pretty sad considering how badly the Bengals played and how embarrassing their losing effort was against Mike Zimmer’s squad.

Lewis is on the final year of his contract and if the Bengals want him back, they’ll need to re-sign him to a new deal. That wouldn’t be a wise move for the team following back-to-back losing seasons and zero playoff wins in Lewis’ 15 years in Cincinnati.

It’s important to remember all Lewis has done for the Bengals’ franchise, but, that doesn’t mean his tenure as head coach should be extended.

We’ll keep you updated as more news becomes available on Lewis’ future with the Bengals and who will be the team’s coach in 2018.

I admit: I was starting to waver. Just for the sake of due diligence I was waiting for official confirmation, though.

Now if this keeps up I'll be able to go all Robert Conquest on everybody, lol. How do you report this stuff before verifying that it's true?
