GEORGETOWN Ky. The Bengals picked off one of their kind of safeties Thursday when Ohio State's Donte Whitner tweeted he agreed to a two-year deal that conceivably puts him in the starting lineup with Chris Crocker on Opening Day in Cleveland Sept. 11. That gives a young position group 66 more NFL starts to go with Crocker's 82, and an experienced third in Reggie Nelson.

In the week since cornerback Johnathan Joseph signed with Houston, the Bengals have added three first-round picks to their defense and two to their secondary in two former Bills, Whitner and cornerback Nate Clements. Nelson, picked up in a trade the week before last year's opener, is also a first-rounder.

The 5-10, 205-pound Whitner, the eighth pick in the '06 draft, qualifies as a Marvin Lewis-Mike Zimmer savvy safety that can play both spots and doesn't mind hitting as evidenced by 321 career tackles. While leading the Bills in 97 percent play time last year, he worked mostly underneath but has been known to work the back line with a rep as a good cover guy.

Although the sides have been talking for several days, the deal didn't heat up and get real until Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

It's believed Whitner's deal averages out to about $4 million per year. Clements clocked in at about $5 million and outside linebackers Manny Lawson and Thomas Howard figure about $3 million each on a defense's facelift that boast three first-round adds in Lawson, Clements and Whitner, and a second-rounder in Howard.

Twenty-two years ago, the San Francisco 49ers pulled a rabbit out of their hat at the last minute against the Cincinnati Bengals to win Super Bowl XXIII. On Thursday, the 49ers did a similar feat against Cincinnati with free-agent safety Donte Whitner.

"And so it continues...on and on....

Coming off of a 4-12 season with 10 straight losses, here is a recap of our offseason:

1) Changes were expected, none were made initially. Marvin Lewis signed to a 2 year deal.

2) MB and Marv hold the most depressing, grouchy, lame press conference I have ever seen.

3) Carson Palmer says "trade me". Bengals refuse. Palmer forced to retire.

4) Adam Jones arrested

5) Chad Johnson/Marvin Lewis continue their silly public mud-slinging, leading to Chad Johnson's trade to NE for peanuts.

6) ESPN names the Bengals dead last among sports franchises

7) Wall Street Journal says Cincinnati has the worst stadium deal of all the major sports franchises with PBS.

8) Former players (again) speaking out against the organization and their cheap ways

9) Cedric Benson arrested for beating the teeth out of his bf

10) Marvin White arrested

11) Our reputation as "that team of criminals" cemented for 10 more years

12) We start out the FA period with 60m in cap room, yet somehow lose our priority FA (Johnathan Joseph)

13) We "kick big tires" but lose out on D.Williams and R.Gallery

14) We sign Deuce (stay puft) Lutui, only to have him fail a physical and immediately resign with AZ

15) Donte Whitner is announced as a Bengal by PFT, Bengals.com, and even Whitner himself. The 49ers disagree.

16) If I'm leaving out anything, feel free to add."~~~Shake N Blake(on the main Bungles board)

That's an excellent summary the Bengals.com poster put together.

On the Whitner non-signing, I'm having flashbacks to Warren Sapp.

I have little time for the bengals, my friends ask the funniest questions because they have no idea.

Who going to be the qb?
The receiver from georgia is nice.
Is dhanti still doing it up there?

The jets and giants on the other hand have great qbs.
dallas has their usual dillusions.

BARFFFF Nice find KaTie

It is depressing watching the Jets have success.
