I noticed that it is now about three years since the demise of the HD-DVD format, and when a Home Video format gets around to releasing films that are on my 'must-have upgrades' list then I know it is a good thing. But HD-DVD never did release many of those kind of films (even though I must have about 100 of the things).
But it did have mpeg4 type encoding often with dual layer discs, compared to Blu-Ray's then pathetic single layer mpeg2 (i.e. needing more encoding space on less available disc space!), thus forcing the Blu meanies to up their game about a year into the format war (celebrate 'Click' as the first Blu dual-layer disc, I think - on second thoughts...).
So thank you HD-DVD for that, as I can now finally watch HD versions of many of my faves on Blu in HD quality (even if I had go half way around the world to buy the Japanese Blu-Ray of 'Suspiria' the other week in Ikebukero as the UK disc is "shite" as they say locally).
The Japanese disc didn't look much, if any, better to my eyes...and it lacks the commentary which I'd really like to hear. I haven't seen the UK Bluay but when I compared the screengrabs to what was on-screen coming from the Jp disc they looked pretty much the same.Andrew King @ May 10 2011, 02:28 AM wrote: I had go half way around the world to buy the Japanese Blu-Ray of 'Suspiria' the other week in Ikebukero as the UK disc is "shite" as they say locally
