Well if you want to play them in canon order.
Mgs3-MGS:PO-MG-MG2-mgs1-mgs2-mgs4

in order of release
mg-mg2-mgs1-mgs2-mgs3-MGS(po)-mgs4

Acid series is a spin off as well as the Digital Graphic Novel, although the DGN includes quite a fantastic and complex database,

In order of release - just because something is prequel doesn't mean it should be experienced first.

Controls and gameplay were evolving with each new title, as well as graphics, and there are some hommages to previous games, that are storywise in future.

Couldn't agree more, it is a crime to not play by the release order and lose all the evolution of the series and in game jokes.
