Welcome to my 2018 diary! In 2017 I had a very good year and grew 2 biggest pumpkins I had ever grown,my 1683 and a Maine state record 1756! Last year I finally got my soil right where I want it and according to my soil test results it hasnt changed much. I will be starting my seeds on the 14th this year and if weather permits I will have them out the first week in May. I will be growing my 1756 and my 1683 this year and I will decide on the next 2 seeds by next weekend. Last year I had a goal to grow 1700lbs and I did that so this year my goal will be 1900lbs! I will try to post every weekend from here on out right up to the weighoffs.

I changed how I germinated this year as I had a little trouble getting my seeds started the past few years so I just soaked them for 3 hours and planted them in 3 inch peat pots and put them over a heat mat. They were up in 2.5 days. One of my 1756 took about 2 extra days to germ but that one will be a back up. I am growing 2 of my 1756s and 2 of my 1683s and also growing a 1928 daletas and a 2002 tobeck. Once germinated I put them in gal pots and under lights. I have my pumpkin patch all tilled and started working on my greenhouses today! I am shooting for may 2nd to have the plants outside in the greenhouses. If my greenhouses are built and heating cables put in sooner I may put them out earlier. I will try and post next weekend!

All my pumpkin plants are doing good and 2 of 4 plants have tentrils so they are getting ready to vine out! I had a hard freeze early saturday morning but my heat lamps kept the plants around 60 degrees for most of the night. Warm temps are expected for the next few days. I have 2 long gourds under the grow lights right now, one is my 126 and the other is the 136 eaton. I hope to plant the long gourds by next weekend!

All 4 pumpkin plants have vines and already had to bury a couple. The 2002 tobeck has the shortest vine of 14 inches and my 1756 is the longest vine in the patch. It has a vine of 26 inches and my 1683 has a vine of 23 inches and the 1928 daletas has a vine of 20 inches. Here is a pic of the 1928 daletas in the front and my 1683 in the far back! I think I will hold off planting the long gourds for now. I will post next weekend!

I have the longest vines I ever had for this time of year beating my 2015th year! The shortest vine is the 2002 tobeck just an inch short of 4 feet the next longest is the 1928 daletas at 4 feet 8 inches and my 1683 at 4 feet 9 inches and my longest is my 1756 just an inch shy of 5 feet! Greenhouse sides will have to be removed soon possibly within a week and that will be the earliest ever! I have seen some cuke beetles already so I will have to spray soon! I took out all my heat lamps today as signs of frost is getting less and less in my area! I started using TKO today at a low dose and will add it throughout the season! I will post next week!

All the pumpkin plants had a slow growth this week because of the cool weather. The tobeck has a vine of just over 8 feet and both the 1683 and the 1928 has a vine of 9.5 feet and the longest vine is my 1756 and that has a vine closing in on 10 feet! Looks like warmer temps is coming so Im hoping those vines start growing! I will post by next week!

All pumpkins still growing! The tobeck has a vine just over 10 feet and my 1756 has a vine of 12 feet and the other 2 just shy of 12 feet. I added the rest of my soil amendments in and got my irrigation system up. Im still looking at a pollination at 15 feet so it look like that wont happen for another week and a half! I will post next weekend!

Pumpkin update.....my 1756 was the first to be pollinated at july 2nd at 15 feet out and then the 1928 on july 4th at 15.5 feet out which I didnt think that would take the pollen since it was 94 degrees that day. The 2002 was pollinated on july 7th at 15.5 feet out and the 1683 was pollinated on july 8th at 18 feet out. The first one on the 1683 aborted so I had to wait until a female opened up at 18 feet. The 1756 just picked up growing at 19lbs at day 20 now! Last year by day 35 I had a 630lber so Im hoping to beat that this year!
