It is with sadness that we report the passing of Ralph Snodsmith, host of WRKL's "Garden Hotline" on April 17th, 2010, at the age of 70.
The "Garden Hotline" started the year the station signed on, 1964. Ralph picked up the hosting chores the following year, and his run with the show on WRKL continued until the station's sale in 1999.
The show moved to the other commercial station in Rockland, WRCR, later that year, and Ralph remained with the program until about a year ago, when health issues required that he curtail some of his broadcast activities.
The "Garden Hotline" had aired Sunday mornings on New York's WOR radio for decades. Ralph did what turned out to be his final show for WOR on March 14th. The station's website is reporting that Ralph died as a result of complications from an accident suffered in March.
Ralph Snodsmith was a gentleman both on the air and off, and the WRKL family mourns the loss of this broadcasting great.
I produced Ralph's show on Saturday mornings for a couple of years at the R. Yes - he was a gentlemen. Also a real trip to produce. He would drink coffee only super hot and black. If you ever heard little periods of silence it was because he was holding the "cough" button with one hand while choking from the coffee! He turned beat red sometimes from it leaving me to wonder if I should call for help.
He was a person you felt privileged to know for he had a magic about him.
