Sara Lowes sums up some statements from literature in the appendix of her essay from 2017:

- patriarchy can be limited by avunculate and possibly also matriarchy
- according to Opie et al. 2014, groups became matrilineal before they become matrilocal but were already patrilocal before they become patrilineal
- according to Richards 1950, there are "Bemba-Bisa-Lamba", "Yao-Cewa", "Mayombe-Kongo" and "Ila" types of matrilineal social organisation in the DRC
