Catastrophic Coverage Feature [OCC-like] in AL-LU 2009 Plan

In our current medical benefits provided by AL-LU we retirees have a feature called Other Covered Charges which is a form of catastrophic insurance coverage provided in the UHC Secondary Plan.

Few retirees seem to be aware of this OCC feature which could prove very valuable, for example, in the event of a serious illness requiring long term hospitalization and substantial medical expenses not covered by Medicare.

The equivalent of this OCC coverage can be found on page two of the insert titled "Benefits 2009: Benefits At-a-Glance and Resource Contact Information."

This insert was in the back page pocket of the document titled "Benefits 2009: Information and Action guide."

These two documents were in the Yellow Envelope received in early November from SecureHorizons MedicareDirect [SHMD].

In the table on page two of the inserted document, look at the intersection of the row labeled "Lifetime Maximum Benefit" and the sixth column labeled "SecureHorizons MedicareDirect" and see the entry "Unlimited (some exclusions apply)." [This entry also applies to the first five columns in the table.]

Call SHMD on 888-980-8117, as I have done, and verify the meaning of this entry for yourself if you feel it might be of value in your situation.

I have found the people on this number to be very knowledgeable and helpful.

In my situation this will be a major factor in my decision to stay with or to leave SHMD in 2009.
