Officials describe incident as a 'significant provocative act'

WASHINGTON - Iranian Revolutionary Guard gunboats harassed three U.S. Navy warships in the Strait of Hormuz Sunday, in what the U.S. military considers a "significant provocative act."

Military officials told NBC News that two U.S. Navy destroyers and one frigate were heading into the Persian Gulf through the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz when five armed "fast boats" of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard approached a high speed, darting in and out of the formation.

At one point a radio message from one of the Iranian boats warned, "You are going to blow up within minutes."

The Navy warships went into defensive mode, radioed the usual warnings to steer clear, and in the end no shots were fired. U.S. military warships believe the Revolutionary Guard boats were "testing our defenses," the officials said.

Whole story at MSNBC

He just didn't tell me what it was."

What will Bush say? "We had to start a war on Iran because they threatened us with, uhhm..., gunboats - well known as weapons of mass destruction" ?

This story is breaking on sky news now as well, nice coincidence that this happens on the eve of Bush going on a tour of the middle east to discuss "the Iranian threat".

Yeh add this to the recent release of the video of that supposed american al qeada guy it's very handy for the pro war candidates, a nice reminder of "the dangerous world we live in".

could THAT be more evidence that osama died or was murdered? Wouldn't he have been the one that made the video, if he were still alive? If I'm understanding the current stories correctly, this new video is very "current" in the fact that it mentions Bush's visit.

They simply couldn't just use an old Osama video if that were the case. They only use those when they need a generic "death to the USA" message.

They know we wont support preemptive war so they now need an event to cause us to go to war. Maybe a false flag? Or two evil people conspiring together.

They need something soon, time is running out on the Bush admin and i doubt they will want to leave office with the legacy of the rise of Iran in the middle east, now doubt a strike on Iran will be high on the agenda when he talks with the Israelis, and you're right they need a pre text, no way will the American people stand for yet another preemptive strike.

It was just breaking on the BBC new 24 that the voice which reportedly said "we're coming towards you you're going to blow up" didn't come from the Iranian boats after all, this ones getting weirder and weirder, wonder if this was a botched manufactured cassus belli of some kind ?

Weird. Nothing on BBC sites or any other news site about this, you 100 % sure?

Yes it was on the bbc news 24 channel, it was breaking news for a few minutes and then they said they'd report more later.

Good point. Maybe it would be more fitting to say that the U.S. warships were harrassing Iranian speedboats.
