My clinic told me to schedule my first ultrasound at 4w3d. This seems very early to me. What would an early ultrasound at this stage tell you?

Because 4w3d from retrieval would be 6w3d of pregnancy, which is a typical time for some RE's to schedule a first u/s. You might see the very beginnings of a heartbeat at that time.

Cooper is the only clinic that I know that does super early scans, but even they don't do them until the 5th week (or 3 weeks after retrieval). You would only expect to see a sac at that point.

Thanks Pixl. I was counting from retrieval. This eases my mind.

They date the pregnancy starting from day 1 of the last menstrual period. So in a textbook cycle, ovulation happens on day 14. Retrieval is equivalent to ovulation in a natural cycle, hence the 2 weeks of pregnancy. But yes, it is very confusing that they start counting the pregnancy date from before conception!

Hope you get good news at your scan. Best of luck!
