I need to chill out. Help me out here, ladies... I'm losing hope...

I just read a Q&A from the DEMomsToBe section of this site concerning "3 day vs. 5 day transfer".

That Q&A made it sound like they only do day 3 transfers just so they don't have to explain why there were NO blastocycts to transfer on day 5.

*My donor had 22 eggs retrieved
*15 were ICSI'd
*Out of those - 9 fertilized.
*Out of those 1 was a "good" 8 cell embryo and 1 was a "fair" 6 cell embryo on day 3.
*They transferred those 2 little guys on day 3 (July 2nd)
*3 were dicarded
*They did an extended culture on the remaining 4 and none of them made it to blastocyst stage. (GRIEF!)

So, I am led to believe that they didn't think any of the would make it to blastocyst - so they transferred them just so they could charge me the full fee????

The PLAN was always to do a transfer on day 5 (which would have been July 4th. They changed it at 5:00pm on day 2. Which left me scrambling for a flight. Heck, maybe they just didn't want to work on the Holiday?

What other reasons could there be for NOT letting the two they transferred on day 3 go to day 5 before transfer???

transfer on day 5. With that being said, there are many embryos that would survive far better in the uterus, than in the dish. I have three children from day 3 transfers. They were all fresh cycles. I had 7 embryos left from my last successful cycle and decided to thaw all 7 and let them go to blast. I transferred the best two and an pg. with twins. The point of the story is, you can be successful with 3 day transfers and 5 day transfer.

'Better out than in'. I've heard on many ocassions that its better they are in you than outside. Not sure the reasoning for this but thought you might like to know.
Meanwhile, many an emby that didn't look magnificent has made it to the 'congratulations' section of the yellow board.
Hang in there I say hang in there!
best, THK

I have a 38-year-old friend who recently did OE IVF for the 3rd time. They got 13 eggs. 9 fertilized. They quickly transferred the 2 that were still growing on day 3. None of the others made it. She had REALLY wanted to transfer only one but because they seemed to be of such poor quality, the RE convinced her to transfer both.

Her twins are due in 4 months.

The thing is, they can guess but they can't know which embryos can make it. And many, many REs think the mother's body is the safest place for them to grow. Your RE was playing it safe, but that's what you would want him to do.

Wishing you luck.

there are some clinics that PREFER 3 day transfers. in my case i've done numerous transfers, both 3 day and 5 day... and i've ONLY gotten pregnant on the 3 day transfers. one ended in an early m/c (having nothing to do with which day we transferred) and the other resulted in my son.

also, in both these pregnancies, i transferred 3 embies on day 3 and they were the ONLY embies i had. the rest didn't make it to the freezer.

3 day transfers work. hang in there. the 2ww sucks.

You are correct at some level, some labs do day 3 transfers only when the embies don't look like they'll make it to day 5. BUT, on the other hand, NOT all labs have perfected growing the day 3 to day 5 so they lose them while trying. The culture is different and more expensive for day 5's. The lab at the RE I went to this time was Excellent, but the lab at RE last year , not the best. So, if the labs not perfect, its best that theyre transferred and safe. Also, my children were all from day 3 transfers... They didn't believe they'd make it to day 5 so they put them in and Both took! (((hugs))) to you. I know this is so stressful! I'm sending tons of positive thoughts your way!

OK, OK... Thanks, ladies. My new mantra for the next few days will be "3 day transfers work, 3 days transfers work, 3 day transfers work"

It's just that this is my ONLY shot to have my husband's baby. So, perhpas I am more vested in this than I would be noirmally. They defrosted all of his sperm vials this go 'round and we can't get/use anymore since he has been on radiation and various forms of chemotherapy for months now...

I was so hoping we'd get more than one try out of this DE cycle since it can be our only cycle.

But, like many of you said, maybe we won't need a 2nd try. Maybe one or both of these tinies will find me a comfortable place to hang out and grow for the next several months!!

I am at 5d of 3d transfer. I might start testing with POAS tomorrow or Saturday... but I should probably wait...

Thanks, again!
