Climate change concerts 'to dwarf Live Aid'
By Carlos Grande and Fiona Harvey

A series of concerts "bigger than Live Aid" is being planned for July, in a bid to put the subject of climate change before an audience of a global audience of 2bn.

The event, scheduled for July 7, will feature co-ordinated film, music and television events in seven cities including London, Washington DC, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town and Kyoto, with major broadcasters and media owners aiming to extend the reach of public awareness of global warming.

It is understood that former US vice-president Al Gore, whose movie An Inconvenient Truth brought climate change to cinema audiences last year, will announce the event tomorrow in London.

The organisers hope to involve up to 2.5m people in events and link-ups at the cities involved, as well as other locations.

They are promising a line-up of artists to "dwarf" that of the Live8 and Live Aid concerts, thought to be branded under the name "SOS".

One person close to the event said yesterday: "The talent involved is just exponentially bigger because the issue itself is bigger.

"Live Aid was about asking people to stump up money, this is about effecting systemic change.

"The aim is not just to drive awareness but to get people to take action."

These actions are likely to include personal pledges to reduce emissions, for instance by using energy efficient equipment or flying less.

A great deal of the argument around climate change is concerned with the burning of too much energy by modern western industrial nations, a problem likely to increase with India, China and other developing nations joining the rush to industrialise.

There is also an aspect of the debate concerning the possibility of Peak Oil, and the possibility that modern Industrial Society will be unsustainable as strategies for energy capture become increasingly subject to the Law of diminishing returns.

There is also the problem of the destruction of rain forests and other natural resources that, some argue, could destabilise the planetary ecology so drastically that human life could become untenable in future climatic conditions.

I am not scientist enough, to draw any conclusions around the climate debates without reading widely around the subject.

However, as I am a good "CONSPIRACY THEORIST", I was wondering how much mileage there was in the idea of alternative energy being a threat to the centralising Powers-that-Be.

If I am a trendy, moderately well-off person I could buy a few solar panels and a little wind turbine. With a melon up my arse, and a rolled-up trouser leg, I could use undue influence to circumvent the planning objections of the local NIMBY council, erect my alternative measures, and by-pass corporate control of my energy consumption.

Does my little plan have any merit to it, and is it worrying enough to insure Goverments undermine alternative energy investment, and push for Nuclear Investment without properly debating the matter in Parliament?
People don't do what is right.
They do what's most convenient
And then they repent.

those bastards ! what blatant timing...would it be over optimistic to suggest that this will be a huge flop ?

i mean, live8 was surely the killer for people believing this 'music will fix things' hogwash ?

as for global warming...

it is being pushed as all about CO2, but no-ones caning big business for the actual stuff it does to us and the planet, like acid rain, rare eco system destruction, ocean pollution, diesel microparticulates, toxic plastic additive vapours and such

enviroguilt taxes for the masses, laughing all the way to the bank for the truly guilty corporations

all the true science (not the poor logic bullied 'consensus') suggests that: 1) we are experiencing little more than normal planetary orbit and solar cycling, and: 2) CO2 is the minor player to WATER VAPOUR in terms of greenhouse-ivity, and: 3) sub oceanic heating of the mantle by 'earth seasonal' magma currents is what's heating the oceans, and: 4) melting icecaps can be attributed to sub-ocean heating processes, and most crucially that: 5) we are experiencing warming as a net result of the previous four issues, and this warming is indicative of a temperature spike which may precede AN ICE AGE in the next two hundred or so years...no, i'm not mad, or an industry shill, i'm just telling you what the evidence suggests

so, add a spike (happening now) to a cooling period to follow, and you've got a perfect scenario for 'government saved us from ourselves' - which will of course, be a total fabrication

have a read of some Gary Novak: http://nov55.com/gbwm.html

don't worry over peak oil, there's only 200-300 years worth of natural gas left underground

Troubadour - anything you can do to break free from centralised energy and amenities, you should, but wind power is very limited unless you have a large open space for a tall installation - solar has cost issues - the photovoltaic cells may well die before paying for themselves

an excellent first start is:

rainwater harvesting (toilet flushing - some even drink the stuff if no lead etc in roof)

and solar water heating (using black water tubes in reflective material lined cases - usually on the roof - very effective, and certainly they give benefit all year round)
the 'war "against" terror' is a travelling circus, ready to pitch its macabre death display wherever self determination has a chance, in any place where transnational corporate interests say so, and while we sit in thrall at the spectacle, our pockets are being picked, and while we marvel at the shock and awe on display we should know, that the ring master's plan is that it is we who will be the future stars of the show

Flowers to mark 7/7 anniversary

Three Tube trains were targeted in the 7/7 attacks

Flowers will be laid at King's Cross railway station to mark the second anniversary of the 7/7 bombings.

They will be laid by Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell and London mayor Ken Livingstone at the exact time of the devastating attacks.

The government will also arrange for victims' families to visit the four Tube stations involved in the attacks.

There will be no national silence and, in line with the wishes of the families, no large public event.

Low-key events

The attacks in 2005 saw 52 people killed by suicide bombers Mohammed Siddique Khan, Shezhad Tanweer, Jermaine Lindsay and Hasib Hussein.

They detonated bombs on Tube trains between King's Cross and Russell Square and near Edgware Road and Aldgate. A bus was also blown up at Tavistock Square.

The bereaved families have asked for low-key events to take place in the capital to mark the second anniversary.

Ms Jowell said: "The lives of those caught up in the terrible events of July 7 2005 were changed forever on that day.

London will never forget the terrible events of July 7 2005 and the 52 innocent people who lost their lives
Ken Livingstone, London mayor

"They have shown great courage in starting to rebuild their lives, but two years on, the pain and grief is still unbearably raw.

"A formal act of remembrance at King's Cross will give the country the chance to remember and pay their respects to the 52 innocent lives lost."

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport will also organise private gatherings for relatives and victims who wish to come together and reflect.

'Heroic acts'

Mr Livingstone said: "London will never forget the terrible events of July 7 2005 and the 52 innocent people who lost their lives.

"In paying our respects, Londoners will continue to demonstrate the tremendous resilience and strength they displayed in the aftermath of the bombings and show the world that this city will not be divided."

Flowers will also be laid at King's Cross by London's transport commissioner, Peter Hendy.

He said: "We will never forget those killed and injured on July 7, or the heroic acts of so many staff, passengers and members of the emergency services.

"It is an honour to represent London's transport staff and to pay respects on their behalf."

.
How interesting, in context. Tessa Jowell has a bit of a thing for laying flowers on 7th July of whatever year and was in fact laying flowers at the 9/11 memorial in Grosvenor Square on 7th July 2003.

I wonder if she'll be laying white (English) roses this year on 7/7/2007.

Town hall prayer call on bombings anniversary

A call has been made for Christians across Norfolk to gather outside town hall at 12 noon on July 7, exactly two years after the London bombings, to pray for their communities. Gail Halley of Norfolk Call to Prayer reports.

Two years ago, the London bombings killed 52 people, injured very many more, and unleashed a wave of fear across the country.

Now, leaders of Britain’s prayer movements – being mindful of the date, 070707, as well as the anniversary - are inviting Christians to gather at their local Town Halls to pray for their communities.

The vision for this local-but-national prayer initiative emerged in the wake of the London bombings when Cindy Jacobs of Generals International, together with several UK prayer leaders, were praying for the nation. During this time of prayer Cindy released the word ‘070707 Open Heaven’, and they began to pray about gathering, maybe in Trafalgar Square for a day of forgiveness and prayer for all the pain and fear caused through the London bombings. As they followed the leading of the Lord, however, they sensed He wanted something new for the nation, at a grass-roots level.

At a London meeting Julie Anderson shared the word of 070707 with Dr. Jonathan Oleyede, Leader for Global Day of Prayer, London, who also sensed the significance of the date of 070707. It had been on the heart of Julie Anderson, and Lois Gott – founder members of the Deborah Company UK – to ask Church leaders, and Christians to pray for the nation on 070707.

As the vision has grown, the plan has gained backing from several national leaders so far, and is growing as a grass roots time of prayer. It is also taking off around the nation and is by no means confined to London.

Joel Edwards, General Director, Evangelical Alliance, “Prayer always has, and always will be the engine room in any Christian movement. 070705 shook our Nation. In response, we must shake our Nation with our prayer. "

Jane Holloway of World Prayer Centre, Birmingham says, ‘This is a wonderful opportunity to link up Watchmen across the nation to stand and pray at the same time in every community on 070707’.

Cindy Jacobs, Generals International says “There can be no doubt in my mind that this is the time for a mighty move of God in Britain! '07 is Open Heaven for the nation. Satan meant to wound the nation with the 070705 bombings but what he meant for evil God will turn for good in this powerful time of the church agreeing together in prayer at the Town Halls all across the nation.”

Julie Anderson, Co-founder of Prayer for the Nations says, “We ask you to join us in fulfilling this vision by being at your own local Town Hall at 11:00am to pray in preparation for a nation wide prayer to be corporately lifted up at 12 noon on 070707.”

Jill Gower, Call to Prayer, is asking for as many people as possible from the region to participate. “It would be great to see gatherings around the local Town Halls and the City Hall in Norwich.”

As Prayer for the Nation points out, “Your participation to pray at your Town Hall is very easy. Simply be there with members of your Sunday School, Youth Group, and Church congregation, and along with local Pastors, worshippers, take the light you have and pray for your church, family and friends, and the youth and children of your community. Also, if you wish, invite some public officials to participate with you in prayer.”

....
Follow the numbers.
