TexomaB, Nuvverberr, Albatros, Beardenator, and Imaginary -  thank you guys for the kind words, it is much appreciated!

Gato - I'm trying to figure out how I can do this upcoming competition without setting my self back in growth,  but that's the next post...

WeirdyWithABeardy - Ha yes, I am a cyborg.  We joke that I am the $60,000 Man.

Sly - we got our kits on a holiday special price too.

Bfrnr - We went with the 23andme because of the good reviews.  I think it was pretty accurate.  It was what I was expecting.

Tom - It really has been that long,  sometimes I feel like I'm still new around here, and other days it seems like I've always been here.

So here's a new update.  I have a big competition in Austin in the next couple of weeks.  I have pre-registered for the General Groomed category because that is basically the only one that my beard length qualifies for.  I'm trying to grow it out so I don't want to set myself back much. I would have to trim a chunk off to get it evened out and competitive with the other groomed guys.
I tried a new thing today and I'm really happy with  the results.  I curled the beard.  I was inspired by @bfrnr and his greco/roman curls.  This was just a first attempt and the pic doesn't really show it well, but I really like the way it came out.  It makes the beard quite a bit shorter though, but doubles the density.  this is still a little rough, but I'm going to keep practicing to get it neater between now and then.  I think if I can get this techniques down I wont have to trim, except a few fly-a-ways just before the comp.  This Competition is the big Austin Facial Hair Club's yearly one. It's on Feb 24. IMG_3256.jpg

the process to get here was not pretty though.  Now that I kind of have an idea of what I'm going to do, I may try a cheap set of small rollers.
You know.... this is what I love about this board.  I can talk to you guys about putting rollers in my hair, and you get what I'm talking about.  No where else in the world..... 😆

and here's how I did it......  I sectioned off parts of the beard (wet), twisted the area and then folded it back and held it with a rubber band until it dried. Took out the rubber bands and then applied some balm. Then just combed the whole thing out.  It has held the shape all day so far.

First off, good luck with the competition. It's funny though, cuz if I don't balm and blow dry my beard it very wavy and has big fat curls. I hate that and like it straighter. I guess sometimes we all want what we don't have, at least for a while.. lol

Wow, I posted here earlier today and now it is gone.  I will do my best to re-create my thoughtful and creative post 🙂

We bearded guys will do a lot in an attempt to make our beards look better, much more that most of us ever did for our head hair.  Many we would not discuss in public, but here we all understand.  I have tried a curling iron before, and I have tried a straightening iron.  Neither really improved my beard.

My natural curl is similar to the curl you achieved.  I would like to have your natural more straight texture, and you want my more curly texture.  For me, my morning beard has the tightest curl and is my most compact beard.  The more I work with it, the longer, straighter, and thinner looking it becomes.

I am not sure which would be better for the competition, your natural or curled.  But I do have a suggestion.  Find a hairdresser that will work with you and try a few different things to style it.  Find what works best, and then make an early appointment before the competition.  Of course, we want photos here of everything you try.

I really liked your beard texture before and the image of how it/you looked is branded in my brain.
The curls are different and something to get used to. Nevertheless your excitement and love radiates from your post and breaks through the barriers of "recurrent recognizability" - So keep playing and perfecting those curls!

We certainly celebrate you, your beard, your dedication to its craft and this great story of yours. It is instructive, inspiring and fun to see you creatively work it all with your thoughtful and deliberate ways. 'Break a leg' - or - is it 'Break a Beard'(?) in Austin.

I like waves and curls, I had them just for a few weeks during my growth and then disappeared – I would go for them if I could choose it, like wearing a hat. Chapeau to you to have the patience to go through the process and experiment. Funny how the waves are loved by the ones who don’t have them and who has wants to straighten them.

As I have to tie my beard when I go to bed, in the morning I have these sort of waves – normally they are a mess so I wash and comb, but it happened a couple of times that they were not so bad and I kept them all day long. I never tried to control them, but if you are willing to give it a go, you might put rollers before going to bed, and in the worst case a shower will fix everything.

Ciao, Stefano

Glad I could be an inspiration even for you even though your beard is always immaculately groomed to perfection. I can understand the desire to switch things up though. I used to always be envious of those with big, voluminous, curly head hair. I remember when I first moved to Baltimore, I visited a hair cuttery in Towson and told the girl I wanted something wild for the girls and to surprise me. She gave me a curly perm. Lasted about 2 weeks before the curls relaxed. Went back a few more times and each time the curls would last so long as I didn't wash my hair, LOL. Ah, well it was fun for  a while.

Best of luck in the competition!

Thank you all, I appreciate the encouragement.
I tried the rubber band thing again a couple days after this and it was a complete train wreck.  the beard was going in every direction and it looked like I had been dragged behind a truck.  So I decided against this method.  I did find a set of tiny rollers and tried them the this morning with much better results.  I'll keep trying these over the week to see if I can get the technique down better and get some consistent results.
this is how it looked today.

Ha!  I didn't really want to post that one, but here ya go.

As a reference here is how it looked a couple days ago uncurled.  this give you an idea of how much the curl shortens the beard.
I go back and forth on whether to stick with my normal look or not, but to compete in a groomed category, the lines need to be pretty tight so would have to do a strong trim to get it right. That's what I'm trying to avoid doing.

Not sure if these methods work for beards, but there are a variety of styling products for curling hair depending on hair type (wavy, curly, straight, etc). My neck beard just under the ears hangs very straight. Unless I tangle it up into the rest I have these two long pony tails hanging down each side of my neck. I might have to try curlers myself or run my fingers through it all to make a big tangled mass, LOL.

Probably the manliest photograph involving curlers I have ever seen. Hahaha, excellent share! For what it's worth, your natural beard shape is very cool, sir. It must be fun playing around with curling, but I think your beard is fantastic without compacting it with curls. A light trim up to ensure you are within the right category sounds fine, and will no doubt emphasise the sheer density of it. :) The best of luck for the competition, we are rooting for ya!

Your ability to play with your beard is wonderful. I've seen you do so many things with it. You have so much fun. You are truly an inspiration in many ways. A big hug, dear Paul.
