I do like an occasional pipe, especially in winter after working outside in the cold all day I will sit in front of a warm woodstove and smoke a pipe and have a snifter of brandy. I also spend several days each winter building a new pipe. There is nothing like carving out your own briar pipe. I may not be a master pipe maker but I am not bad.

That is so nice Oly! I have been thinking about starting making pipes to, when I find the time. I think I will start with one of those kits where only the finishing and final shaping is left to do, to get me started. do you make yours from scratch?

What would it cost me to buy one from you? Image

do you have any photos of pipes you've made?

I do now but I did start my first with a kit. I found out it is easy to make from scratch and there are several good sources for briar. I used a file, drummel tool, and sand paper for shaping and finishing it. The stem is trickier but I got that down now also. Even if you use kit go slow in the shaping process but don't be to timid. I am going to make a churchwarden next.  I am becoming timid about having a match to close to the beard and mustache so I want a longer stem.

I go out in the quiet of night after a long work week and smoke my pipe as I stare up into the stars, sometimes accompanied by a nice bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. That is my happy place.

There was a time in my life when I loved a good pipe smoke.
Then somehow, I got hooked on cigs. Man, thats such a trap.
I am off cigs and on to Cigars... thats an expensive way to stay off of cigs.
I think its time to move back to pipes.

I'm an ex-cig smoker myself, which is why I limit my pipe smoking to the weekends. Don't want to get hooked on that crap ever again.

Hey Ladogawalt:
I smoked a pipe once while remodeling an old Victorian House. I stepped out on the roof above the porch, since I didn't want the smoke in the house, and got so dizzy I fell off the house. That was the first and last time I smoked a pipe, but the tobacco aroma was almost to die for. Tom

PS:  Your 14 moth beard is really to die for.  Great beard.

Beardedfather - Almost to die for??? You could have given that expression a literal meaning. LOL
Did you inhale? I would only get dizzy if I inhaled.

I have a small hand made pipe that I will post a pic of when I get one.

Great beard Ladogawalt - Are you going to start a journey thread?

Next time you smoke a pipe, make sure you're on the ground!

I just recently became interested in smoking a pipe. I bought a corn cob to see if I enjoy it and an OTC tobacco...some capt black gold...while I feel there's probably a better smoke out there than capt black i did enjoy it. Very relaxing. As a former cigarette and cigar smoker i can say its a different experience. I would like to buy a briar but don't know which are good. Any ideas?
