Is that the maximum speed of a VWD or just a very slow driver?  The bus looks new in the picture.

The driver may not have done full speed but weight may also have contributed. The bus was about 2/3 full.

The 151 VWDs are much better on the motorway.

The 152 (and newer) VWDs are a bit heavier, but not that much. If you look at the legal lettering you'll see that the 151 reg ones are licensed to carry 96 yet the newer ones are only licensed to carry 91 despite being 70 cm longer. This is because of the extra weight and more than 91 would exceed the bus's design gross vehicle weight (obviously in reality 96 isn't possible in the shorter VWDs but they can in theory take this much). They weigh the equivalent of five people extra so hardly enough to make a real difference at motorway speeds. I think the VWDs (or any decker) are a mistake on the 220X, because even if they were going flat out they are only able to do 65 km/h. What should happen is that the speed limits are raised for city buses and then they could allocate deckers or whatever they fancy to this route to maximise the advantages of using the N27 and N40, they could do the full 100 km/h when conditions allow that way.
