Tundra
This northern region of the land had been ice locked for years behind the Dragonspine Mountains. Recently a huge glacier has moved far enough through the mountains to create a pass. With this new trade route open it is now possible to visit this rugged and freezing place where only the strong survive. The winters last for months and months, and summer is not more than an early spring that lasts only a moon before giving way to the cold once again.

Leonidas trudged through the cold snow vowing silently to himself to show no discomfort. His Armor was on and he had precious little to cover him or keep him warm. The hike should be enough and if nothing else he could go to calisthenics. He knew that somewhere around here would be his opponent. For a minute he wondered if the man was hiding but no there he was in the distance. The man was obviously dressed for the cold with furs and chain on. From a distance Leonidas took stock of what he saw.

A sword hung by the mans side and Leonidas saw no shield. The man seemed confident in his skill then. Steel wrapped the man under the warm looking furs. Furs were a decadence that Leonidas forwent on purpose. To harden ones own mind was the idea of his exercise and fur defeated that. He would simply refuse to acknowledge the cold.

Leonidas knew precious little about his opponent save what he could see. He guessed the man to be a most competent fighter and his knowledge of that blade was most likely absolute if it were the only weapon he carried. The man could not participate in Ak'Shat but that didn't mean a formal greeting could be forgone.

With a swift motion Leonidas thrust the but of his spear into the snow covered ground and in the tradition of Ak'Shat held his right hand out about six inches from his chest and aligned with his left shoulder. The back of his hand was to his opponent and his spines were extended on his forearm. He called out with a clear voice into the crispness of the winter to his opponent.

"I am Leonidas Borgalion out of Alexandra by Charlamange of the Densha peoples. Let us test each other in combat and may the more perfect emerge with a victory!"

That being said Leonidas hefted his spear and the muscles on his exposed arms rippled. He knew that many had never fought a Densha before and that would be a huge advantage to him. On the other side he hadn't a chance to fight many humans and that may prove to be his undoing. This was no time for doubt. From here he could see hatred on his opponents face. This would be a match that would use all his training and mercy would not be found here. Adrenaline pumped into his veins and he forced it down and calmed his mind for that which was to come.

Ice and Snow was a common theme in this place. Blizzards and snow drifts, quite inhospitable. Yet there were people here making a living. Alex trudged through the snow. The cold wind sweeping past him billowing out his black hair. He showed no discomfort, he did not feel the cold, he was cold, he was ice itself. Whatever warmth that might have been in him had been driven out long ago. He was here to fight, a tourney. Not a test of his skills, he was in it for money and maybe possible business.

His contractor and several others were making huge bets on the outcome of this tourney. He would get a share of it just for participating. His opponent was out here. He scanned the horizon and saw a figure in the distance. That must be him or her. Alex approached till he could fully see his opponent. His opponent was a man. Young but a warrior that Alex could tell. He was taller than Alex and bigger more muscled.

He had a spear and only leather armor. He could tell the man knew how to wield that spear. He was dealing with an opponent that could fight. Yet how well Alex was not sure. Alex did not get to be as old as he had nor as good as he was by throwing caution to the wind. The man introduced himself. Alex said nothing his cold blue eyes studying the man.

Alex checked his sword in his scabbard making sure the ice had not frozen the blade. It had not that was good. Alex walked around the man a few times studying him closely. He nodded to himself. Yes a fighter for sure. He turned around and said his voice as cold as the snow around them," Leave now boy. While you can. I show no mercy and expect none. If you leave there is no shame. But if you fight while there are rules against killing you there are no rules against breaking you".

He then went a distance and turned around and waited. He needed his opponent angry and prone to mistakes. The carelessness of youth that's what would win him this battle.

Leave. The man wanted Leonidas to leave. It took nearly every ounce of self control he had not to rush straight in and erase that stupid look on his opponents face. The man couldn't know just how much of an insult that was to the Densha. Leaving a fight that had started was even more taboo than what he had already done. Death was a preferable outcome to retreat. Still since Densha never left their lands, until him, he would not fault the man and would explain.

"You may retreat if you like. I am Densha and once a fight has been joined it ends only when the conditions are met or when one is dead. You are not Densha and may leave if you desire but I no longer have a choice. I hope you have prepared for your defeat."

With that Leonidas charged ahead quickly to close the ground before the man could get his guard up. If he could end this battle quickly with overwhelming power maybe others wouldn't overlook him. As he neared his opponent he took a quick leap into the air and thrust down from above letting his momentum from his quick forward movement take the place of being grounded. The opening moments had finally began.

Alex could see the boys battle with self control that was good if he could push him over the edge then he could end this quickly. The boy said he was Densha whatever that was. Alex did not care the boy would lose no matter what he was. Confidence this boy was full of it. He would have to break that. The boy then came at him in a rush. The boy was fast that was for sure perhaps faster than Alex. However he left himself open when he jumped into the air.

Alex dodged the blow and the spear dug deep into the ground from the impact. Stupid boy he thought. Alex's sword was already out and he swept a round house kick into the boys exposed body. He then followed up the attack if the boy was staggered with a quick couple of slashes all aimed at certain parts of the body. Some at the legs and arms and one at the head. If he hit even only once the boy would be hindered and possibly away from that spear.

He then launched a blow with the hilt of his sword toward the boys head trying to finish the fight by knocking him out.

Leonidas couldn't believe it. His spear attack missed. The man named Alexander was preternaturally fast. As his spear dug deep into the frozen ground Alexander's sword whistled from the sheath and he launched a roundhouse kick against what he thought was Leonidas's exposed ribs.

Leonidas, however, was well trained from the age of 4. 18 years of harsh Densha training had prepared him to recognize the weakness of any move he could launch. Using the fact that the spear was in the ground he quickly pulled forward enough on the shaft of the spear and tucked his knee to take the kick more in the shin. The power of the kick still blasted him away and surprised him. Alexander must be as strong as him. Something he wasn't expecting. Strong and fast, this was going to be much more challenging than he thought.

Then Alexander was on him throwing quick sword strokes that left little if any opening. The man knew how to wield that sword with a frightening skill. Leonidas began to feel the fire of true combat and it thrilled him. Now knowing he would have to use all his skill to fight this man he was beginning to get excited. He shook it quickly, if Charlamange out of Arissa by Mikhail had seen that he would've stopped the match and beat Leonidas for succumbing to adrenaline. He knew he was being pushed back but didn't care.

Suddenly he knew what he had to do. With a quick whirl he batted away a sword stroke and aimed the butt of his spear at his opponents exposed throat. Alexander, however, surprised him again with speed and ingenuity. Using his free hand he grabbed the butt and pulled Leonidas off balance toward a strike. Leonidas knew he couldn't block the blow and tried to roll with it. The sword bit in just under the armor between his hip and ribcage before he could roll away with his spear.

Leonidas came to his feet and checked himself. Yep, Alexander had indeed drawn blood. A worthy opponent then. Time to begin taking this seriously. Unarmed against a man with a sword and steel armor. Still it wasn't without weak spots. Back of the leg by the calf, Underarm in the arm pits, the neck and the inside of the arms. Places he could dig his spikes into. Still he needed to avoid the blade. He smiled a huge smile.

"You are worthy. Now you will see Ak'Shat!"

Saying that he thrust the point of his spear into the ground and came hard at Alexander unarmed. He threw a punch at Alexanders head, meant to draw the eyes away from everything else, with his left hand. With his right foot he hook kicked right to the back of Alexanders left knee hoping it would fell the man to his knee and then Leonidas could follow up.

Alex had drawn blood from the boy. He had first blood. Still the boy had proven quite skilled. The boy was good a little to good for his age. Still that did not shake Alex. His cold eyes watched the boy as he spoke of something called Ak'Shat. He slammed the spear into the ground. The boy wanted to come at him unarmed. Stupid yet Alex's instincts told him not to let the boy get in close. Alex could managed that. His sword would the advantage.

The boy came at him throwing a punch. Alex stepped back with his left leg saving his leg from the blow that followed after the punch. Alex stepped his left leg back back saving his leg from the following kick and allowing the punch to fly by his face. He saw the spikes on his opponents arm. He then brought his sword up slashing at his opponent. It had been mere luck that Alex had stepped back. An old move when he had been a guard. The usual move was to follow it with a lock but Alex did not want to get into a brawl his opponent.

With the slash delivered he pivoted on his right leg and brought his left toward the boys back. If the slash landed he would have drawn blood again maybe. If the pivoting kick landed the boy might be sent sprawling into the snow. Either would be a blow to his pride.

He missed again, although that step back out of his way seemed more lucky than trained. Leonidas knew that his opponent had some decent training. The following slash seemed a bit out of place but not so unusual. A quick twist sideways would take care of, crap a kick follow up.

Leonidas certainly wasn't expecting a kick to follow up an upwards slash and it came from nowhere. Still Leonidas was more than up to the task and decided to try to end the match as quickly as possible. As the kick traveled at him he twisted again and caught Alexanders leg. Using the snowy ground to his advantage he twisted and took both of them to the ground trying to get a lock on the leg and blow out his opponents knee. Unfortunately Alexander knew what he was trying to do and kicked Leonidas off his leg with surprising quickness.

This was turning into a much tougher match than Leonidas had expected from the man. Alexander certainly had training and Leonidas himself was being forced to pull punches looking for weak spots rather than going for hard blows. Alexander's obvious skill with a sword was problematic as well. It kept a barrier between him and Leonidas which was proving vexing. If his opponent could keep him at a distance Leonidas stood little if any chance at all of being able to end his match favorably. Still that didn't mean there weren't a few tricks he still had.

He rolled to his feet and watched as Alexander did the same. Then he saw that quick bunch of muscle in Alexanders leg. He knew a followup sword stroke was coming. Watching carefully for his opening Leonidas quickly rolled his left shoulder back and pivoted out of the way of a powerful quick thrusting attack and balled his right hand into a fist. Opening his left hand and placing it on his right fist he threw is right elbow out into the path of his opponents face hoping to drive the tip of his elbow into his opponents nose and trusting that the momentum from his opponents attack would carry through. To that end he braced his right foot and tried to throw his weight in the direction of his opponent. Now to see the end result.

The assault had not worked and Alex had ended up in a tussle with his opponent. He had just managed to get out of it. He knew he did not want to face the man hand to hand. His one advantage was his sword. If he used that he would win. Still he could not afford to many mistakes. One like the last one could have ended the fight. No this fight had to be on his terms not his opponents. He attacked the man his sword flying and Alex realized he had made a mistake. His momentum carried him into the mans oncoming blow. Alex pulled back as best he could but it still wasn't enough. The mans elbow hit his nose and there was a loud crack and Alex felt pain.

He winced but otherwise showed no signs of pain. Blood flowed freely from his shattered nose. The pain became part of him and ignored. A fuel as it was. The boy was very good and had shown it there. He brought up his blade and wondered where he should strike next. Or if he should he couldn't afford another opening like that one. Blood spattered on the white snow from his nose. A little drilled onto his clothes. He ignored it.

He circled his opponent and picked up some snow and put it on his nose. The cold ice helped ease some of the pian but that as not the only reason he did it. He then threw the snow at the man. The man brought up his arm to block the oncoming ball of snow. Alex took advantage of that and swept in his sword slicing toward the mans arm. If he could remove his effectiveness in combat he could win. He then fiented to the left and attacked the man once more his blade whistling through the air. He was going for the mans legs.

Reduce effectivness that was key right now.

The elbow had found it's mark on Alexander and Leonidas heard a satisfying crunch as he felt the mans nose flatten behind his elbow. As the man stumbled back he didn't loose focus. Leonidas was impressed in spite of himself. This guy was a tough man. Anyone that could quickly shake of a broken nose had either had it broken before or was a tough bugger all around.

The man circled him and while keeping his eyes on Leonidas, he bent and scooped up snow to put on his nose. This also told Leonidas the man was smart. The cold would keep the swelling down and soothe the pain. Then as the man reached for more snow something happened that Leonidas was not expecting. The man grabbed the snow and flung it at Leonidas's face. Being caught off guard he tried to take a quick step back only to feel his back foot start to go out from underneath him. He brought his arms up and corrected his weight to keep from slipping.

The snow smashed into his arms and he could just barely see the sword coming in behind them. Moving quickly he got his arms and torso out of the way. He hadn't counted on his legs being the target and the sword swiped across the top of leg. Gritting his teeth he knew he only had seconds of an opening against Alexander.

He pushed off his injured leg and rushed forward to assault the small opening given to him. Keeping his right hand low he grasped Alexanders wrist to keep the sword at bay across Alexanders body. With a fast move Leonidas pulled his left arm up and across his own body driving his forearm spikes right at Alexanders throat.

Alex was satisfied when he managed to surprise the enemy with his assault. However he knew he was unlikely to make the same plan succeed twice. The boy was too good to fall for it again. Alex was flexible though and older and more experienced more than likely. However he had little time to act because the boy had seen an opening and secured his wrist and was going for his throat. Alex knew what he had to do. He spun to his right freeing his sword arm in the process and slashed at the boy with his sword.

It was aimed at the rib cage. However he knew he could not stay close to the boy. So once the slash was delivered he backed away quickly. Keeping the distance that was key. Cut, slash and run yes that would work. Use the terrain. With the boys injured leg he would have difficulty keeping up with him. Alex cut to his right and dived behind a snow bank. He however did not stay there he silently crept to another snow bank not to far away. The boy would follow and if he did not Alex could easily come upon him from behind with his stealth.

The battle would only get harder for the boy from here. Stealth now and quick action would be the key.
