All we're getting in SLC is rain, at least in the valley. I got rained off a peak on Antelope Island today it was coming down so hard. We're supposed to get over an inch of rain today.

Where is that 76.6" report from?
The lat/lon seems to match the Galena Summit snotel but the data does not. Cruising around the Snotel site, it doesn't seem that any of them reported more than about 3 to 4' during the storm.

The SNOTELs only show the change in snow height - they don't account for settlement in the new snow or old snow. Snowfall measured on a storm board that's cleared regularly will show more snow falling because it measures what fell, not what fell and settled.

I'm pretty sure Galena Summit didn't get 77" of new snow though.

First, 22 Miles NW of Ketchum is Vienna Mine, not Galena. Here is the entire section from the Skyview Weater site.

0953 PM HEAVY SNOW 22 NW KETCHUM 43.91N 114.69W
01/19/2012 E70.1 INCH BLAINE ID MESONET

STORM TOTAL SINCE TUESDAY 5 PM - VIENNA MINE - SNOTEL
SITE - ELEVATION 8963 FEET

Second, Snotel sites measure snow depth by ultrasound, then transmit the data collected by radio. There is nobody at the sites 'clearing storm boards' regularly. What falls under the sonar stays pretty much stays there. We are talking about Snotel sites and not the snow boxes at Bogus and Brundage right??

Third, The ultrasonic device cares very much about the snow that has settled, that is why when it hasn't snowed for a day or five, the measurement actually goes down. And throughout the spring season the measurement continues to go down until reaching 0.0. The Ultrasonic device measures what is under it, new snow, old snow, settling snow, or melting snow.

I will concede that it did not snow 77", In my opinion from looking at the data, I believe that was most likely the total snow depth for that day, at Vienna.

So the storm totals were basically "fudged" a bit to make it look like those egregious storm predictions sound like they came true... that is until the Idahosummits Message Board crack team of investigators read right through the mularkey!
