Stacy - if you make it to the parking area, the trail to the base of the mountain is very nice and very clear. I had intentions of taking my wife and 3 year old on that part earlier this year. You kind of know when to turn, and there's almost a little trail headed to the mountain, but it's not nearly as clear. From where you turn off the main trail to the base of the mountain is still flat and only a few hundred yards. Then everything changes. No more trail, just go uphill. If you do see a trail, it's probably where someone found loose rock to descend on and it is likely not the best route. One of my friends said, you just get really mad, put your head down, and go. Stay left of the summit, toward the bottom of the saddle, and you'll be fine.
