I'm posting to inquire about the conditions at Borah Peak and the trail via the standard route on chicken-out ridge. I'm intending to summit in the next few days, and I was wondering how smokey the area is. I know there are a lot of fires burning (I'm from Portland area) and I want to make sure it's clear there before I go. Has anyone been in the area the past few days and have any information?
Also, cramp-ons and iceax aren't needed via chicken-out ridge at this time of the year right?
Hey Robert, I climbed Borah yesterday and had clear skies and good air quality. There was no snow on the route at all. Snow bridge has completely melted.
The smoke and air quality can change daily depending on weather and fire conditions. The best way to keep an eye on the air conditions is by checking the webcams at lostrivercamera.com
If you have any questions on the route at all let me know!
