A few years ago an outdoor acquaintance asked me, "So, what projects are you up to?"
I answered, "Oh, I want to see how many peaks I can climb before I die."
He gave me a funny look. I returned his funny look, and we went our separate ways.

A subset of this peak bagging mania has been to see how many different summits I could reach in a calendar year.

After flirting with 100 peaks on a few occasions, I finally broke the century barrier with 109 new ones in 2004. The stars aligned in 2006 with a personal best 117. Perhaps a motivator here was an attempt to flip the bird at turning age 60.

For those of you who enjoy lists, here's the trail of my life in 2006. The 117 peaks are listed in chronological order. If outside Idaho, the state is noted. The several re-ascents of peaks previously climbed are not listed.

The purpose in showing this personal information is twofold. First, who knows? Maybe this will motivate someone to explore new heights (mutual altruism). Second, to challenge the summit register thief to work his dumb butt off (more bird flipping).

Dave, many thanks for your observation. I had never thought of looking at monthly peak totals.
Yes, apparently that June 06 total of 34 is a personal best.

The next nearest one I can find is this July 2005 total of 24, as follows:
July 1- Kennady 10810WY, 2-Medicine Bow 12013WY, Browns 11722WY, 3-Bridger 11004WY, Red 10508WY, 4-Parkview 12296CO, 5-Colorado Mines 12493CO, Flora 13132CO, South Vasquez 12900CO, Vasquez 12947CO, 6-Bancroft 13250CO, Parry 13391CO, 7-James 13294CO, 8-Black 10840CO, Bears Ears 10577CO, 19-Ibapah 12087UT, 21-Jefferson South 11941NV, 22-Bunker Hill 11473NV, 23-Cleve Creek Baldy 10941NV, Spruce 10262NV, 27-Lewisia 8792, 29-Summerhouse 10112, Timber Creek Pass 9727, 30-Intrusion 10055.

In third place is April 2004 at 22 peaks:
April 4- Roy 7492, Side 7424, 5-Rockland 7740, 12-John Evans 7400, Ireland 7169, Pleasantview 7271, 16-Gibson Jack 7081, 25-Bigelow 8550AZ, Lemmon 9157AZ, 26-Wrightson 9453AZ, 27-Heliograph 10022AZ,Rose 8786AZ, Reno 9094AZ, 28-Escudillo 10912AZ, Pole Knoll 9793AZ, 29-Greens 10133AZ, Haven Knoll 9947AZ, Grassy Top 9910AZ, Sherlock 9913AZ, 30-St Peters Dome 9636AZ, Whiting Knoll 9348AZ, Antelope 9003AZ

Seems the highest monthly totals all involved road trips where the goal was to cram in as many peaks as possible.

I'll be looking forward to hearing about your White Clouds explorations in the coming season. Regards,
R

My personal best peaks is 52 in 2004. That included my best 2 months ever, June 2004 - 14 peaks and July 2004 - 16 peaks. That was during my pursuit of the Idaho county highpoints. Like Rick, they were road trips.

They don't hold a candle to yours Rick.

I better weigh in here. I think the most peaks I've done in a month was July 2002, and "only" 15. And even then, a bunch of those were repeats.

The "Lists of John" site creates summary stats for anywone who takes the time to sign the summit logs there. Its kind of fun for enginerd types like me. Here are my totals:

http://listsofjohn.com/PeakStats/Conten ... las&E=1&S=

Pretty consistent over the last few years, top month was 7 peaks in Aug 2007 while on a binge in the northern White Clouds.

As far as I know the front runners, past & present, in Peakbagging USA are in this approximate order. Quality of peaks selected and difficulty of ascent are not factored in, but there now must be a way to do so.

Bob Martin, Barbara Lilley, Gordon MacLeod, Bob Packard, Andy Smatko, Norman Clyde, Fred Beckey, Gerry Roach, John Vitz, and probably yet a dozen or more with over 1000 lifetime peaks.

My question is:
I'd love to see peak lists (including dates) associated with any of these mountaineering athletes.
Anyone out there know if this info can be readily found without invading privacy? The motive is motivation.
Thanks,
Rick Baugher

Geez, the most I've done in a month was 6 in June of this year (I'm not counting Lost River because I only made it to the false summit in June.) I got 27 done in 2010. Looks like I need to pick up the pace to catch up.
