Those ID stripes on undersides of horizontal surfaces remained in Black, and the sheen there looks not unlike natural metal. Schillings a/c e.g., had NMF undersurface. Per his crew chief the Gray on Gabby's last 'Bolt looked a bit purplish - such as in that colour photo of port ammo bays being loaded - because topsides were first sprayed Green overall, then followed with the Gray. He said Gabreski wanted his a/c painted like the German a/c they'd been seeing.

I saw something about it on the internet but the source was a bit dubious. I would love to list this as verified info.
