Man, that's one plain, ugly ship!

I sure hope it works better than the "Littoral Combat Ship" from Lockheed-Martin is. Word going around is that the LCS is turning into a multi billion dollar bundle of problems.

but that bow looks suspiciously like they did 100 years ago! Maybe the old time ship designers were on to something...

The DDG1000 was cancelled and there will only be three orphan ships in the fleet. This means at best two at sea at any one time, hard to make a mission out of that. Our current fleet of DDGs are stretched thin and most are not fully crewed to specs. Those with ABM capabilities spend a lot of time deployed, which pushes crew members and families. The average work week for a sailor on a DDG is 70 hours. Not tough deployed, but it doesn't change when you are tied to the pier. It would be a whole lot better to have those DDG1000 dollars supporting the existing DDG operations.

Me thinks the advanced arms, expansion potential and armor/striking power autonomous to a support fleet would classify this ship as a capital ship !??

I digress,,from only reading Yahoo headlines, I hold this assumption,,Just call it a battleship not an oversized destroyer
at least it sounds like we're getting bang for the buck and not just an overpriced support ship.

we will see what happens, but, the navy is going to heck in a handbasket.....

I wonder what will happen when they need to protect aircraft carriers and there are only 3 destroyers????

Whether you are a fan of these ships or not, and the jury's still out for me, I'm glad they are being built here in Maine. Bath Iron Works does good work. I'm glad the work on these three is happening here. Maybe it will set the stage for some sexier boats down the road.
The Burkes have been popular and long-lived. Another good contract like that would be great up here.
