Ju 52 designation question

This is one I've been pondering for a while. Why does the Ju 52 use a designation that doesn't seem to go along with the Luftwaffe designation scheme?

Ju 52-3m/ge then a sub-series number. I understand the 3m is three motors, but what's "ge?" And why wasn't it Ju 52-A/6 or whatever? I'm guessing it's a prewar designation that never got changed?

...applied to civil version, powered by BMW 132 "Hornet" engines...
I had the same question some time ago....
