I heard in news today that we just sold a bunch of these new fighter planes to Norway. These must be
super secret as hadn't heard of them before. Any ideas who makes
one?

It's the fighter-bomber version of Norway's newly-built B-52s. n/t

There are two much more egregious errors in designations than a simple mis-read, conflating F-35 with the number of airframes. At least Norway is recognizing the need to upgrade and re-arm in the face of Russian aggression, F-35s and new P-8A Poseidons!

1. Lyndon Johnson reading RS-71 and saying "SR-71".
2. Sec of Air Force responding to an AvWeek reporter who asked about the designation of the new JSF at the announcement of Lockheed Martin as the competition winner. SecAF had the "deer-in-the-headlights" look, as did his surrounding staff, and blurted out something to the effect "Well, it is called the X-35 so I guess it is the F-35!"
Which is how we got stuck with F-35, instead of the next designation numbers in sequence, probably F-25.

Of course, the US military has been bastardizing designations for years. F/A-18 is a bogus designation. And, where do we get from B-2A to "B-21" in one step? What a huge, political screw-up.
