Last night I pulled out Airfix's equally as old R.E. 8 kit with a thought towards building it as a follow-up to this one.  All I can say is NOPE!  I'm curious about how Airfix produced two such different kits around the same time.  Then again I see that many have built some beautiful models from that kit, Old Man especially, so I'll leave it on the bench for a while and see what happens.

The Airfix DH 4 came out some time in the late 1960s, the RE 8 I believe dates to the mid Fifties. That's a lot of dog years.

Hi Dan,
The Airfix Re.8 was among their first WW1 models. She dates from 1957 and is thus a contemporary of the Fokker Dr.I, Sopwith Camel, Brisfit and probably also the Albatros D.V.
I've got one (amongst so many other projects ) underway and with time, patience, lots of sandpaper and some imagination it can be brought up to the same standard as your DH.4.
As you've already pointed out OM made a lovely job of one here.

This is a real beauty. I like the way you achieved the "stretched fabric " effect. I can't recall seeing this on the "old" Airfix kit I built decades ago.The colour effect ,rigging and "wooden" prop and struts is so well done. I admire those who reig in 1,72nd scale. Paul (aka Bertie Lissie)

Tom and Albatros Pete, you guys are correct of course, there was a 10 year spread between these kits.  Somehow I got it in my head that the DH4 was from 1957 instead of 1967.  That explains the difference in "quality" between the two.

Nine years gap between the release of the RE.8 (1958) and the DH.4 (1967).  A quantum leap in quality in those nine years!
