Flashback

“Yo, big bro…listen, um, Mom and Pop didn’t want me to say nothin’, but it didn’t feel right not telling you this: they plannin’ on selling the house, man. Our family ain’t looking so hot with them financials. I’m only telling you because it don’t feel right keepin’ you out the loop, but don’t try to pull any crazy shit over this, aight? I know you blame yourself for this shit, but you can’t put this on yourself, bro. We’ll manage somehow… I miss you, man. Call me soon.”

Present

A 6’3” African-American teen by the name of Isaiah Johnson walked through the seedier districts of Downtown Kaneshima with a slight, but noticeable limp in his step, wearing a black hoodie with the hood flung over his head as well as black sweatpants, and carrying a bag on his side with a significant amount of cash, if one were to look inside. If one were to also look under the hood he was wearing, one would find that he sported a small cut underneath his left eye along with a small bruise. The boy had just finished with his latest venture into the underground fighting ring, hoping to make some fast money winning fights.

And win them he did. While he has had minimal experience fighting in the past, the years he spent keeping his body in top physical shape as well as his newly found powers more than evened the playing field. His technique was shoddy, and he usually ended up taking more hits than he needed to, but he only needed a few good hits to put his opponent away.

Too caught up in making that money, he never figured it was only a matter of time before the owners of the fighting ring took notice of how unnaturally successful he had been. Before he could call himself a cab back to his school, Isaiah found himself staring down a handful of suited men that were slowly making their way closer. Pulling his bag of cash closer to himself, he knew enough about life on the streets to know these people weren’t here to play games.

“That’s close enough,” He called out to them as they stopped about ten feet away from the teen.

“Hey, man, it’s all love over here! You’re that new fighter that showed up in Goro’s ring, right? Lot of talk about you man!” A man in the middle of the group said in an all-too-sweet voice as he stepped up with a smile. “You’re still undefeated, from what I hear! We just wanted to know a little bit more about the man behind the fighter! What’re you doing in Japan, anyhow?”

“That ain’t none of your business, man,” Zay replied with a flat stare, never taking his eyes off the immediate threat.

“You see, you would be right about, 90% of the time on that one, but when you’re winning fights left and right with as shitty of a technique as you’ve got, it raises some questions,” the thug said, losing his smile and his sweet tone, “Questions like, is he ‘roiding out? Are the other fighters throwing matches for him?...does he have super strength?”

That stopped Isaiah dead in his tracks, having no response.

“Heh, yeah, we did a bit of digging. Isaiah Johnson, up-and-coming all-star athlete in the States, until he had a freak accident that brought him here, attending Senki; that sound about right boss?” Isaiah grit his teeth, his anger beginning to build with every word that came out of the man’s mouth. The thug let out a low whistle, “Man, that is some shit! Like, I get it, man, I really do; someone’s gotta pay the bills back home, right? But we don’t take kindly to getting hustled at our own game, and we got an image to maintain.” It went unsaid, but he knew he couldn’t go crying to the faculty back at the school about this; not unless he wanted them finding out about his late-night activities.

“…So what you gonna do about it?”

“Heh, well, you’re from the streets of L.A., right? So, you should have a good idea of what comes next,” the thug said ominously as the group pulled out a variety of weapons, ranging from chains, to knives, bats, and everything in between. A tense silence filled the empty street as Isaiah weighed his options, waiting for them to make a move as he began to scan all of his potential exit routes.

Despite being told not to, Mikaela was roaming around the streets of downtown Kaneshima once again. The last time she was in the downtown area at night she freaked someone out because she was munching on some meat she was given as a gift. Thankfully this time she wasn't eating anything or scaring anyone, yet. This time she was coming back from a movie that had just gotten over with, choosing a bit of a later time to watch it considering she was doing homework and other stuff prior to going out.

As she walked through the town, she began day dreaming about being the protagonist, saving the day from bad guys that were doing harm to innocent people. Her thoughts were soon interrupted when she heard some people talking in the distance, just around the corner of a nearby building.

She sneaked towards the edge of the building, peering around it to try and get a glance at what was going on. From what she heard it didn't sound to friendly, which caused her to take precaution rather than simply walk in. It sounded like they were talking about a game, maybe someone upset that they were losing and they couldn't take it.

Mikaela wanted to get a better look, shifting in place and accidentally moving her feet too much to cause a bit of noise. She looked down, seeing the loose rock that helped create the noise. She quickly ducked back around the corner, hoping that no one heard anything and just ignored her.

A few moments had gone by and the thugs still hadn't made a move. This told Isaiah that they didn't know as much as they were letting on. They knew he had super strength, but judging by the slightly hesitant looks on their faces, they didn't know about his other powers. The only thing this helped him with, however, was to buy time: he'd rather not fully flame up with a bag full of money on his person, and there was no way he was setting the money down within the vicinity of these goons. This left them at a bit of a stalemate: the group of thugs not willing to let this go but also showing reservations of taking on an enhanced individual, and Isaiah not being able to bail himself out with his powers.

"Yo, do something, cuz!" he taunted, hoping to goad one of them into an early charge and cause some confusion. They were nothing if not disciplined, however, as they stayed grouped together and slowly began walking towards him in tandem. Well, there went that idea.

A golden opportunity had presented itself to him, however: due to the tense silence in the area, the sound of some loose rocks being kicked were heard by everyone present, as the thugs were distracted for a split second. "The hell was that?! I thought I told Eiji to scare off any bystanders!"

That split second was all Zay needed. His right hand burst into flames as he threw a streak of fire towards the group; it wasn't anything too lethal, it was just enough fire to make them flinch back and block their vision of him as he called off his fire and broke into a dead sprint in the opposite direction, unknowingly running towards Mikaela's hiding spot.

"Shit, he can chuck fire too? We might be out of our league here, boss--"

"Screw that, no one hustles us and gets away with it! Call the others, we've got ourselves a thief to catch!" Their ringleader exclaimed as they began to give chase.

As Isaiah passed the corner, to his confusion, he saw a girl almost two feet shorter than him that seemed like she was trying to make herself look scarce. What was a little girl doing here? He guessed that didn't really matter now as his protective instincts kicked in. Looking back towards the gang of thugs, and seeing that he had somewhat of a head start, he turned towards her. "Hey, you'd better get out of here quick. These guys ain't playin' around," he told her before running across the street. Luckily, all of the thugs followed his lead, not bothering to check who it was behind the corner. Isaiah only prayed she would take his advice before any more thugs came swarming into the area, unsure of just how many gang members he attracted.

Having ducked back around the corner, Mikaela covered her mouth in hopes that no one heard her. However, from the sounds of the standoff intensifying, she could assume that she was probably heard. The next thing she'd see was the young man, that was standing alone, run past her and inform her that she better run if she didn't want to get tangled up in his affair.

It took a second to process what he had said, considering she was a bit tensed from seeing a fight about to start. She quickly turned and started running back the way she came, sprinting as fast as she could. Mikaela wasn't used to running, especially when if she fell she could possibly bite her tongue and end up losing whatever she bit.

Having Mary Jane's also didn't help her situation, considering they're formal shoes and not meant for running in. A block later she'd have to stop and catch her breath, crouching down a bit and ducking behind a nearby light post that hid most of her body. She hoped no one would have came her way, closing her eyes and covering her ears to try and calm herself down.

"This kid's...fast as hell...no way we're catching up to him..." One of the thugs wheezed, as the distance between Zay and them only seemed to grow bigger. Assuming none of their friends were waiting around the corner to jump him, he looked to be home free at the rate he's going.

However, Isaiah's hopes that the thugs would simply ignore the girl he passed by earlier were quickly dashed as one of the henchmen trailing the group happened to glance behind him, curious as to what gave the boy pause before he went running in the opposite direction. Noticing the girl on the run, he turned back towards his group. "Boss! Found another runner! Could be one of his friends!"

That gave the ringleader pause as he turned to observe the smaller and much slower target run a block down before hiding. A plan quickly formulating, he sent two men after the girl before turning back around.

"Hey! You can run circles around us, but your friend most definitely can't! If she's worth a damn to you, you'd better get your ass back here!"

That brought Isaiah to a dead halt, clenching his eyes shut in frustration. This was not how things were supposed to go! He was more than fine putting himself in harm's way for this money, but he had never meant to get anyone else involved. Turning back around, he held his hands up in surrender.

"Alright, cool it! Look, this was all me, okay? I don't know her, she ain't got nothin' to do with this!" he yelled out as he walked closer to them at a steady pace, keeping his hands free and visible.

"Yeah, you'll forgive us if we don't take a thief's word for granted. Anyhow, even if you're right, we'll keep her around all the same, if only so you won't run off on us before you get yours," the gang leader smirked viciously. Isaiah clenched his teeth in anger, feeling his body beginning to heat up, but he made sure to not show any fire, lest they do anything to the girl.

Meanwhile, the two thugs that were sent after the girl closed in on her location behind the light post crouched low. "Hey man, she's pretty young. This seems a little messed..." One of them remarked reluctantly, and was immediately reprimanded, "Shut it! Unless you wanna answer to the boss, you do what you're told. Get up, girl." Not waiting for an answer, the thug roughly grabbed her upper arm, pulling her up as he attempted to drag her over to the group.

Mikaela continued to sit silently behind the light post, keeping her eyes and ears closed as best as possible. Unbeknownst to her, she was taking the 'If I can't see them, they can't see me,' idea a bit too truthfully. However, she'd soon find out that they did indeed see her, grabbing her and pulling her by the arm.

Her resistance was comparable to her weight; very little. Pulling her along she'd try to release their grip, putting her feet down to try and make it a bit harder on him.

"Hey, let me go!"

She cried out, pounding on his wrist with her smaller, weaker hand. A second passed by as she remembered she could call for help, Mikaela reaching into her pocket to pull out her phone and began dialing a number. Normally Mikaela would be using two hands to hold the phone and dial the desired number, but considering one hand was temporarily unusable she attempted anyway.

A feeling of anxiety took over her mind, unsure as to what she had gotten herself into. Let alone, Mikaela didn't even know anything regarding thugs and gangs, only hearing about them from Margaret and various sources.

Mikaela's resistance was troublesome, but not much else as the bigger man merely tightened his grip and continued to drag her towards the rest of the thugs and Isaiah.

"Uhh, hey man, I think she's going for her phone..."

"Then stop her, genius!"

Not bothering to see what number she was attempting to dial, the man that wasn't dragging Mikaela snatched the phone out of her hand before tossing it behind them and out of reach. With that settled, he grabbed her other arm, helping his partner bring her to the rest of the group.

Meanwhile, Isaiah's scowl only deepened as he heard the girl's cry of resistance while she was essentially being manhandled to their location. "Yeah, y'all some bad dudes, huh? You the man out in these streets? Goin' around, kidnapping little girls and shit," he remarked past gritted teeth. The ringleader merely scoffed in response as he walked up to the boy.

"As far as I'm concerned, my conscience is clear. Can you say the same for yours, though? If you'd just been a good little kid, stayed in school, and not stolen from us, tonight never would've had to happen, but here we all are."

With that, he struck Isaiah across the face, the blow strong enough to send him to his knees as he dropped the bag of cash. He may have had super strength, but he definitely did not have super durability. The two thugs and the girl were within visible distance now, his eyes meeting hers. "I'm sorry...didn't mean for none of this to--" He wasn't able to finish his statement as he was kicked in the midsection; who it came from, he wouldn't have been able to say.

Gritting his teeth, he tried to keep his wits about him as the thugs began to strike at him repeatedly, making sure to keep an eye on the general location of the girl and the two men, feeling his skin beginning to burn up in response to the immediate threat. Sooner or later, these guys were going to make a mistake. He just hoped he was still coherent enough to act on it when they do.

"Ah!"

Mikaela exclaimed when her phone was batted away, just a few more presses before she could complete the number and call. Now that her other hand was secured, pulling Mikaela along was much easier despite her protests and resistance.

Once she was close enough, she'd see the young man that had run into her several moments ago, down on his knees and in front of another man that resembled the two that were dragging her along. She was a bit upset by the whole ordeal, hearing Isaiah express that he didn't mean to get her involved despite getting cut off.

"Hey, quit being mean!"

She shouted at the man that kicked Isaiah in the gut, watching as he continued his treatment towards the young man. She was starting to feel angry, a feeling she was told to suppress because of how unstable she could potentially get.

"I said, stop!"

Mikaela repeated albeit a bit louder and now baring her sharp teeth. She'd attempt to reach towards one of her captors' wrists or hand in an attempt to bite them, though if she did they'd wish they hadn't grabbed her to begin with.

Isaiah could feel his will to endure the ongoing beating begin to slip as the seconds ticked by, already feeling the fresh bruises forming underneath his clothes. If he didn’t act soon, it’d only be a matter of time before all of the fight is beaten out of him. As these thoughts ran through his mind, he could faintly hear the girl saying something in protest.

“Girl, you’d better shut up before—ARGH!” One of the men holding Mikaela captive couldn’t finish his threat as the girl bit down on his hand, her sharp teeth tearing a chunk out with ease. He let go of her, nursing his hand as he cried out in pain.

“What the hell was that?!”

“Dude, look at her teeth!”

“Is she one of those freaks too?”

Still on the ground, Isaiah wasn’t exactly sure what everyone was freaking out about, but this was a golden opportunity if he ever saw one. With a vicious snarl, he set his right arm ablaze as he tightly grabbed the leader’s foot, who was still standing in front of him, but was now distracted by the commotion with the girl. The man screamed in pain as he collapsed onto the floor, feeling the scalding heat on his ankle. Getting up, with both of his arms now on fire, he picked the man up before throwing him at the other thug that was holding the girl captive. The thug let go of Mikaela, being forced to catch his boss as they both tumbled to the ground.

Sporting multiple cuts and bruises, Isaiah moved to stand in front of Mikaela, putting himself between the girl and the thugs. Having a chance to assess the situation, he did take note of the girl’s sharp teeth as well as the blood around her mouth, but he didn’t have too much time to dwell on that, being more focused on getting the both of them out of here in one piece.

“Your boss and your friend look like they need medical attention,” Isaiah said, turning back towards the gang. Their leader was nursing his burnt ankle, unable to reply through the pain, and the one henchman’s hand was bleeding profusely from Mikaela’s bite. “Leave now and we won’t cause y’all any more trouble than we already have.”

Their group in disarray, and after having seen what both kids were capable of, took his words to heart as they took their injured and began to make themselves scarce, eyeing them with a bit of fear all the while. "We better not see you 'round here again..." one of them offered weakly, trying to save face in light of this defeat.

After seeing the last of them clear out, Isaiah let his fire die out with a sigh, leaving his arms bare as he turned towards the girl. Having the time to study her now, the blood on her lower face stuck out much more. He shrugged it off, however; time at the school has gotten him more used to weird stuff like this, plus he was far too exhausted to care. "Look, I'll understand if you want nothing more to do with me after this, but let me at least escort you out of here before they come back. It's the least I could do after putting you through tonight."

Mikaela stood there after she was released, looking up at her captors with the piece of flesh still in her mouth. Blood covered her lips, and the general area of her mouth. It was almost like when a child attempts to put on her mother's lipstick in the mirror, going all over the place in an unorganized manner.

With the piece in her mouth, she bit down and began chewing it, swallowing it without even so much as a groan of disgust. No, this was something she was programed for; devouring human flesh.

Shortly after, her other hand was freed thanks to Isaiah throwing one of the thugs into one of her other captors. It wasn't much longer until she'd see them running away, though one was limping with the assistance of another.

Once they were out of sight, Mikaela turned to Isaiah, the young man now able to see what causing some of the fear between her two captors. She looked to him in confusion when he said he'd understand if she didn't want anything to do with anymore considering what happened.

"What do you mean? Did I do something wrong?"

She asked with slowed dialogue, her sharp teeth clear to see as she spoke with the blood still on her lips and in her mouth. It was evident that she was enjoying the taste of the blood as there were no visual signs of disgust, or even any attempt to remove the blood from her mouth.
