This Heaven's Arena Thread was started during this event and might be eligible for additional bonuses! ENTER THE RING

The air conditioning was down for its maintenance and the lines were taking longer than usual. It was most likely due to this unfavorable combination that the fight broke out in booth eleven’s section.

“Man this heat stinks.” A man in combat fatigues stretched his arms and nodded to Jubei.

“No. It’s your breath asshole. Your voice is literally a fuckin’ fart. Shut it.” The large applicant behind Jubei announced loud enough to make sure everyone heard. He was a heavily overweight man with a stained tee-shirt three sizes too small just barely containing his sizable chest.

“I think you must be smellin’ your own cunt. Cunt.” The camouflaged fellow was grinning, but a careful observer could see his body tensed and ready to act. Several heads turned as the forms clerk leaned over her counter.

“Gentleman please! Keep your voices down.” She’d seen it hundred times, rowdy applicants itching to fight and too impatient to wait for the ring. The carpets were red for a reason. The problem was, once an altercation broke out, it spread like wildfire in this particular setting. She wore a bored expression, but sweat trickled down her face. Was it the heat or…?

“Bitch I’ll keep your v—“

The large man staggered back into several people from the punch to his mouth dealt by none other than the army guy. Before anyone could intervene, the fatty rushed the soldier’s midsection and slammed him into the form clerk’s window.

Jubei had mulled over his choice to participate in competitive combat in the Heaven's Arena. Hell, he'd heard of the arena all the way over on Jappon when he was a young boy and even before that he was aware of it's existence. One could say that Jubei had an itch he couldn't scratch when it came to competitive competition but this was a whole new level. He liked to think he had a healthy interest in competition because it was unavoidable in the Amano village given the training that was done there. Regular sparring in weapons and in hand to hand combat occurred daily and it was something Jubei found himself enjoying sometimes. Being a kid...sparring against other kids, they all compared themselves via the 'win' and 'loss' rate when it came to sparring.

In the time he spent away from the village in recent years Jubei had even taken to watching the fights as they happened on the television. He hadn't ever thought of it as a reachable goal to participate and let people see him on the screen as he fought his way up through the ranks. He imagined it as a boy as this far away thing he would never reach himself and one day about three months back, he swore he knew one of the competitors. He swore he'd seen Ganryuu, Rensuke's fat bootlicker of a follower was hard to miss taking into account nothing but his oddly impressive girth. The event got him wondering and after a bit of research at one of the libraries meant for hunters to gather information, Jubei made his choice. He'd already regretted choosing the day he did because when he arrived in the Esanian Continent and entered the arena area, he'd been told the air conditioning was broken.

The day was hot and, in all honesty, the company was unbearable. Jubei rarely casted judgement unless his overall judgement was already crowded but many of the people in the lines in which he stood were...horrible. A large man with stains on his much too small shirt stood behind him picking at various places on his body and in front of him two people stood a woman with a whip at her side in what could barely be considered clothing. Jubei was not here for this. He was here to test himself and make good time in moving up and earning the right to more information. The goal was training and finding out if that was truly Ganryuu. If it was, he'd gotten stronger and he'd learned nen and probably even developed some sort of Hatsu. The last match that Jubei saw ended in the brutal breaking of a tall man's arm with little effort on the man Jubei presumed was Ganryuu's part. He caught the man and didn't let go until his opponent was screaming in pain.

Jubei wore nothing but a simple Japponese kimono of dark green and skintight black training shorts paired with black sandals meant for combat, not walking around casually. His chokuto was strapped loosely by a string across his back and he had a smoke bomb, 5 shuriken and 2 explosive pouches hidden away somewhere within his kimono. His forehead dripped sweat and he sighed audibly. It was too hot for this shit, and Jubei was getting frustrated. Just as he thought it was enough for him to possibly come back in a few weeks time after the heat died down, the fat man began to argue with the man in line in front of Jubei. Of course, it had to be with him in the middle didn't it?

'Hmm.'

Jubei responded simply to the first man, in military garb of some sort when he adressed him. Jubei barely heard the question before the man behind him returned a salvo of insults. The military man shot those insults back and a moment later, before the woman at the counter could do anything really, the military man threw a punch at the fat man. Jubei was shorter than both of the men and was easily able to duck under the first punch but the fat man's counter attack was a different story. Jubei wasn't able to dodge and as a result was pushed away from the two men and bumped into a third man in ripped black pants, black combat boots and a jean jacket with cutoff sleeves and patches with nonsensical icons all over. His hair was bright blue and spiked strait up into the sky, a style Jubei had never seen. He turned, his pierced brow furrowing.

'Wot the fuck mate!?'

Without anything more than gritted teeth and flying spittle from the man's mouth, he attacked. Jubei was a solid two feet away from the man now, backing up towards the tangled limbs of the fat man and the military man and their skirmish. The combat boot came forward with surprising speed, strait for Jubei's midsection. Jubei, being used to an attack this straightforward, stepped off the line just past the sloppy strait kick. Once he was clear of the attack, he threw his fist forward with the knuckles pointed out his backfist poised to hit the man directly in the nose if everything played out smoothly. The attack was pure instinct and he'd rather not get into a scrap here but defending oneself was viable in this situation. He only hope this wouldn't disqualify him from any real bouts.

It was astonishing; not connecting with his boot. The punk rocker’s surprise was short lived as Jubei’s fist met his face, his head snapping back from the unexpected strike. Luke hit the floor and slipped into unconsciousness. The whip bearer's mouth fell open, and her eyes narrowed. Some little punk just knocked her boyfriend out. Ignoring the unfolding chaos all around her, Selena snatched her trusty whip up and lashed out at the man’s ankle with every intention of yanking him off balance. Good thing she’d worn her steel heels today. They would be coming in handy soon.

Just behind Selena, the military man landed in a heap, and the fatty reached into the clerk’s window to grab hold of her collar. The forms lady screamed and just missed the emergency button under her desk as she was pulled out of her chair.

“I’m sick and tired of waitin’ around in this stinkin’ place.” He grunted.

The sweating group of hopeful applicants looked on with mixed expressions; all of them too stunned to react despite the fact they had come to compete in the well-known fight tower. Some worried about losing their eligibility while others doubted their chances against the hulking bully.

The mowhawked fellow was surprised by the counter attack, apparently having no time to respond well enough to avoid the blow. The back of Jubei's had met with the side of the taller man's jaw, knocking him easily to the ground. The man fell, and Jubei gaped. He was astonished by the result of his attack and in all honesty even launching the attack in the first place caused him a bit of confusion. He had his muscle memory to thank for that and to a lesser extent his father and the bruises he'd caused when Jubei didn't react fast enough for his liking. As the thud sounded, Jubei stared at the back of his knuckles then wondered. The attack was one in ten and even to Jubei's slight surprise made contact with the right portion of the jaw.

He tried to dance away from the man as he fell, only to find his back against the wall he'd been nearest, about three feet further down the way from the small area the clerk sat, filling out paperwork. As his back hit the wall he momentarily panicked as he couldn't believe he was unaware enough to misplace where in the room he was. It was literally the first lesson he learned. "Know where you are at all times, then know where your opponent is at all times." He cursed himself under his breath as he finally regained his senses enough to shift his gaze back towards the line he'd just left. The heat was getting to him.

Just as he did, his right ankle felt a quick sting then he was moving, whether he wanted to or not. It felt as though time had slowed and instead of reaching for his chokuto as he should have done in any real combat situation, his mouth was left agape once again. The scantily clad woman with the whip two people further along in the line made contact with his eyes as he began to fall. She looked angry, then quickly looked satisfied. Jubei had been caught and so easily at that, despite the unpredictable nature of the attack. Her whip tensed for a moment and Jubei was already on the ground.

Thanks to his muscle memory, he's fallen as softly as possible with both of his arms out to his side. They made contact first and Jubei felt a stinging pain in his palms as they slapped the ground but it was better this way. As a result, his head did not smack itself on the floor and that was the best he could have expected given the situation. Before much more could occur, the woman filling out the forms screamed aloud and Jubei turned his head, as he assumed most other folks in the room would, and snapped it on the woman.

The fat man from before grabbed the woman by the shirt and explained his grievances. The same grievances as the rest of those waiting in line, only this man was stupid enough to put his hands on the officials of the arena. Jubei hoped he could use this time to stand once again, making sure to keep his eyes on the woman though he found himself turning to look at the whip woman and gave her a look of regret, attempting to convince her he didn't mean anything by attacking the mohawked man. He then looked back towards the fat man, deciding it was best to be passive for now so as to avoiding being disqualified but being prepared to strike the fat man if he attempted to physically hurt the woman at the counter. His quick thinking was that if seen assisting the staff, he may not be lumped in with the fat man in resisting them.

As Jubei looked back to see the unfortunate arena employee in the fat man’s hands, three darts sank into the barbarian’s sizable shoulder. Their angles made it obvious they came from multiple sources. Dropping to his knees, the obese brute’s grip loosened and the frightened woman was able to pull away after regaining her footing. The look on her face said it all, that man would never be fighting in Heaven’s Arena. Another dart found its mark in Selena’s exposed left thigh; eliciting a short cry from the whip woman before she went down. Just as she hit the floor, so too did the rude fatty; and a moment of shocked silence settled on the sweltering lobby. Half a dozen special ops team members moved in and surrounded the aggressors. Their weapons were aimed and ready to squeeze additional sedatives at the fallen targets as more security arrived and dealt with the scene. Just as the four unconscious applicants were carried off, the air conditioning kicked on, and a general cheer rose. Fifteen minutes later, the wild-haired Japponese fighter pushed open his designated locker room door to see three others in the midst of conversation.

“I’m telling you, no one’s going to care if you lose a first floor fight. Nobody’s reputation is at stake here. This is easy Jenni guys.” The handsome young man who had been talking looked at Jubei. “Oh hey. Maybe you can help me out.”

“Don’t listen to this guy.” A deep-voiced man said wearily. Standing with his arms crossed, his expression was nearly impossible to read through the unique visor worn over his eyes. The fighter was dressed in a form fitting blue spandex bodysuit with yellow accents and an “X” on his belt. Waving a yellow gloved hand, he added, “Of course it’s none of my business, but he’s got the wrong idea about things.” Turning his attention back to the younger combatant, he spoke in a friendly tone. “Listen, I understand this seems important. But if you really care about this girl, then letting her see you as you truly are is what’s best.”

“Thanks for the advice, but I know what I’m doing. I’m only showing her what I’m capable of. There’s nothing dishonest about that. Plus there’s more to it, but I can’t explain it all.” The younger fighter turned to the tired-looking ninja with a grin. “I need your help. I’m willing to pay big Jenni for it too. It’s really no big deal, but it would make a huge difference for me.”

“He wants you to throw your match so he can impress his girlfriend.” The dark-skinned man explained from the corner. He was the only other combatant in the small room, and continued to do pushups without looking up.

Jubei's eyes, where they normally would have widened in shock, remained even as he remained a moment longer on the floor than he would've liked. In that moment, the darts began to fly, first hitting the fat slob of a man who had his hands on the woman behind the counters, then a few more buzzed through the air in the following moments. Jubei did his best to watch them as they did, preparing to be hit himself. Even if he were targeted, he'd 'take the hit' so to speak and not fight back. He'd only attacked out of self defense but the truth of the matter is that not many other people would have seen it that way and as a result he was simply glad he was still on the ground. He was focused on what was happening around him and a moment later, when the heavy hitters entered and made themselves clear, Jubei felt the coiled whip around his ankle slowly release his grasp. He felt not was as good a time as any to stand back up and get in line. He was annoyed but it seemed as though he was not being carted out, that was good. The Mohawked fellow and the whip lady would most certainly be angry at Jubei should they ever meet again however.

Within minutes of being able to gather his lost pride again and find his spot, much more civilly this time, Jubei smiled subtly as they were informed the air conditioning was working again. Jubei spent the next stench of time berating himself for allowing the woman to whip his ankle in the first place. He quickly reminded himself that he may be trained but he'd seen and read about many other hunters and criminals who were more impressive than all of his training in total simply by being better antiquated to things like Hatsu and Nen. He was nothing to those people and he had told himself exactly that many times. In many ways, he was only beginning his training. Before he was ablt to muse about himself and his self perceived weaknesses, he was finally at the front of the line and was quickly ushered into a locker room.

As soon as he entered, now his green-brown kimono covering his chest as it was meant because it was not longer sweltering and hot, he cringed in the moment he was barraged with questions. He listened and made eye contact as that was normal and polite but he was only just getting over his earlier annoyances. He even nodded questioningly when the young man first approached him and inferred he could help him. He didn't notice any of the men sitting in the room as being familiar from his earlier line and he continued to walk into the room, keeping eye contact on each speaker in order and eventually found a seat and allowed himself to fall gracefully into it. It appeared as they had finished speaking, so Jubei took his turn in the conversation.

"I have no intention of losing my upcoming match."

He looked like he honestly felt bad as he addressed the young man in the suit no far from him.

"I mean no offence of course but we all have our own reasons we are fighting, yes? I also don't want to lose my first bout."

Jubei looked less worried for the young man and more excited for a moment. He found it funny that the man was using the argument that it was not such a big thing to lose against someone who would be losing for oneself to win. If it weren't a big deal, he wouldn't have asked in the first place.

"I'm hoping we will have a good bout if we are matched though...so there's that."

He knew the comment could easily come across as rude but he was not trained to seem meek. He was trained to take combat, even a bout like this, seriously. He smiled half heatedly at the young man expecting him to be disappointed but expecting a chuckle or something similar from the dark skinned man who had told him the truth of the matter. He hadn't given the young man a chance to plead his case but his answer would have been the same not matter what the excuse, especially if it were to keep up flimsy appearances. He was a handsome young man, it was hard to believe he would have to win to impress a woman. Maybe Jubei would let him have a free shot if they fought as a kindness.

The teen seemed to take Jubei’s rejection hard, his shoulders drooping and his eyes losing their initial brilliance. The ninja was saying the same sorts of things the others had said, and things looked grim. Max expected things to be easier on the ground level, weren’t some fighters there for the money? None of them were in this locker room apparently. He nodded at Jubei’s final remark and spent the remainder of his time in silence. The visor man’s number was called and they all watched him stride purposefully out the door. Soon after Jubei’s number came over the loudspeaker, and the others looked up at him curiously. No one knew exactly how combatants were paired up in this place… Max had even done a fair amount of research, but the arena’s method remained unclear.

Regardless, Jubei’s match was up next in ring K5.

Waiting for him there was a dwarf of a man with no hair, multiple piercings in his face and ears, dressed all in black. Even from the floor below the ring (approximately three and a half feet up) the man looked unnaturally small. Raulf was in fact, a very small person with a lot to prove.

“Three minutes. If one of you is no longer able to fight, the victory goes to your opponent. If you are out of the ring for a ten count, you’re out. If you have ten points, you’re out.” The ref pointed upward and looked to both combatants before barking, “FIGHT BEGIN!”

Raulf began to work the ring with an energized jog, covering a fair amount of space considering his size. The dwarf was clearly experienced; his movements indicating years of hard work and determination to make up for his lack of height. Raulf’s hands were up and loose, his eyes fixed on the ninja man across from him.

Jubei's mind began to wander as he sat and waited. He let himself watch the men sitting around him, sizing them each up in turn. He enjoyed such things because knowing about the people around him was important to his training as a shinobi. Would he ever need to escape from them? Would he ever need to attack them first? Would he ever need to converse with them again, to lie to them? The young man he'd shot down sat in silence and looked down. Jubei couldn't help but feel slightly bad in some sense but he didn't have time to lose his first match on purpose. It was simply asinine to Jubei at this point.

The young man wore a blue skin tight suit, something akin to a 'super hero' as Jubei had learned about watching a television show by the name of "fighting rangers" That Okei and Oyura suggested when he asked what he could watch to help his pop culture knowledge once he was away from the Amano village and the lack of tv. Jubei quickly wondered if the boy studied it for his own set of skills. If he was anything like them, he would be an abnormally good fighter no matter what.

He watched the man with the technology on his head and wondered. It must give him some sort of information on his opponents? Perhaps it was helping him to see and he was naturally blind? It was interesting to try and think about what it could do for him but a moment later the man left the area for his match. Jubei was disappointed and at that point decided to leave his weapons in a small locker that was meant for him to use. This first match would most likely not require weapons as such he thought.

Again, a few moments later, his turn was called. He stood up and nodded to the young man in what he thought was a small bit of confidence he would try to give the boy in winning his next match naturally and not by asking his opponent to lose. As he entered the area the lights hit his eyes in a flash of screaming and yelling. He noticed he was in a room with several different small areas meant for matches and his was in a far corner. Noone was cheering for him but in a general sense they certainly were cheering. He smiled as he began to feel slightly anxious but more excited.

He stepped up onto the arena in which he was meant to fight and made eye contact with his opponent. A small man with piercings and a bald head. A second look caused Jubei to have to blink and look yet again. He was VERY short, not just a small man. He was a...dwarf? Jubei believed that was the correct term at least. He tried hard not to smile to his opponent and let him know he was excited as the dwarf had a serious look on his. As usual, Jubei prepared himself as the referee explained the rules, all strait forward. He was prepared but did not fall into a fighting stance like his dwarven opponent, instead letting his arms fall gently to his side as the fight began.

The dwarf moved around the arena working his legs and preparing for the fight as Jubei had seen many fighters on the lower floor of the arena do on tv. He watched without much of any one emotion on his face and when the dwarf came within a suitable range again, moved forward. It was nothing special, a simple step drag or two got him within range or within perceived range in which he could strike with his clear reach advantage. From there he would not attack but instead hope that his opponent reacted and when he did Jubei would focus on avoiding the counter attack and countering with one of his own preferably to the head somewhere so the fight could possibly be over after the first move. If the dwarf did not react immediately and give him a chance to counter, Jubei would dash past and try to get behind him then strike.

Right away JJ weaved in before popping up Into a tight forward roll, his direction mostly upward but angled enough to allow a deceptive “miss”. His intention was to fly roughly six inches from Jubei’s face, only to release a leg mid rotation to deliver a heel to the top of the other’s skull.

Jubei narrowed his eyes and his gaze followed the opponent's movements like a hawk. When he saw the incoming attack, he pre-emptively dodged to the side, and narrowly avoided the incoming attack without a scratch. As he prepared himself for counterstrike, an announcement suddenly broke out about a nearby fire alarm. The broadcaster asked everyone within the facility to evacuate immediately. This, unfortunately, cancelled the challenge mid way, challengers are welcome to try this again some other day.

I give you effort bonus and content bonus just because all of the replies are so lengthy and contain so much stuff, but in my personal opinion, there was too much background, flashbacks and appearance description, which took away from the intensity of the battle. The extra stuff unrelated to the battle water down the action, and take away the focus. It could have been shorter and you can write faster if you focused in the moment and only do flashback when it was build-up for it. In a combat situation, sometimes less is more. I do like the concept of fighting multiple opponents though, gotta be exciting.
