uhm. I'm from stockholm, but will travel to london, living in brixton next weekend. It's my first time in England and as the mod scene is pretty small in sweden, everything is of value! What I'm looking for are nice clubs and neat places to hang out. I'm eighteen, and my main goal is to dance, (and drink I guess) so the music is pretty important but it can be anything from sixties northern soul, ska to the smiths. And the genuine mod spirit is always welcome.
Any tips? please, anything!

Hi Miss Modular...

Well it's HDIF next Saturday in central London - we play half Motown, Stax, northern and half indie pop like the Smiths and B&S. But be sure to bring some proof of age with you - in fact it might be best to take it everywhere, as new laws in the UK allow clubs to refuse admission to anyone they think is under 21 and doesn't have ID.

This might help

Probably worth registering on their messageboad and asking there.

Good luck and have fun!

Well, I'd head to Carnaby Street and around there, Whilst not as Mod as it once was, there are still a couple of great little authentic mod shops (They are off the main street) and there is a Merc (which is a little "Mod by numbers" but still...)

You will find information on most Mod-related events in these shops ...

When I first got to London (the year before last) there was something called Modstock on at the Rocket in Holloway Rd (I didn't go because my slated companion was unwell and I'd just arrived and didn't know anyone else going), but I think it may have been absorbed into a more general 60s event. There's always eye-catching flyers around before these events.
I think the Albany(?) at Great Portland St has semi-regular mod/60s nights too.
It's not at all 'indie', but if you see anything listed that's DJd by the Nitty Gritty DJs - Debbie (Intoxica Records) and Jai (MVE) - I'd heartily recommend it - they have lots of fantastic groovy and out-of-the-ordinary 60s/soul/rocksteady selections. I've seen them a few times now and I think they're awesome.
Good luck!

Yeah - I went to that - was jolly good - one tends to find out about things by going really to other things, it seems, as Mod stuff seems to be on one of its regular 'outs' rather than 'ins' at the moment...aah, the fickle finger of 'fashion' and 'movements' created by those whose livelihoods depend upon other's sheeplike tendencies will beckon again soon, no doubt.

"Here Comes The Nice" (who are doing some stuff with The New Untouchables next weekend) is another great little Brighton Mod night... They usually do this at the Volks (Tavern), which has been a Mod/Ska club since before the dawn of Townshend .. (not so much now unfortunately, as it has taken on more "dancy" events, but I believe they still do a monthly thing)

Pop into Jump The Gun on Gardener Street or Borderline Records just up from there .... They usually know what's going on ...
