I know some of you guys love keeping lists.  Have any of you kept a list of all of your accessories and what they cost?  Or have any of you made a list like that for an insurance claim?

It seems that I might be making a claim like that soon, but I didn't keep track of the cost of all of these accessories over the years and many of them are not made any more to look up the prices.

The sad story:

On Friday I was doing a little scouting for the rally through West Virginia.  I rode route 33 across the mountain, through Franklin, past Seneca, and then up 250.  Got caught in some heavy rain and just as it was ending a car pulled out in front of me.  I almost evaded, but the wet roads got the better of me and I dumped the bike.  Luckily I rolled free and didn't hit anything.  I was wearing my full riding suit with the padded knees and elbows along with my full face helmet, as usual.  I'm a little banged up but I came out in one piece.  The bike hit the ground and my trusty trailer smashed against the front of the car.

She just rolled over 110,000 miles that morning.  This is the second accident we've been in and she was never quite the same after the first one.  We'll see what the insurance company says, but I think this might be the end of the road.  I'm probably better off taking the money and starting over rather than trying to put the old girl back together.  I've had her since 2001, so I'm feeling a little sentimental.

Glad to hear you're ok. Hate the bike wasn't, but it can be replaced. I have been satisfied with my settlements any of the few times I have had an insurance claim. Good luck!

Ben I hate to hear about your bad "luck"....Good to hear that you were not seriously injured. The only time i had any dealing with the insurance company regarding my bike I thought they were quiet reasonable

Thanks guys.  So far the insurance folks (Progressive) have been super friendly and helpful.  Sounds like the trailer might even be covered among the "accessories" which surprised me.

Ben,

I echo the above comments and glad to hear you were not seriously hurt.  Progressive was more than fair when I dumped my 2009 V-Strom while trying to avoid two deer in November of 2016.  They paid thousands to get my bike fixed, and then paid more hundreds of dollars when the Suzuki mechanic there were more problems than originally thought, plus they replaced all my riding gear including helmet, jacket, pants, boots and gloves.  Actually, they were way more than fair because I could not sell my bike which had 66,500 miles on odometer for anywhere near what Progressive had spent to fix it back to "new".  I certainly appreciate how hard they tried to get my bike back to what it was before I dumped it, but I would have been better off financially if they totaled it, and I just bought another bike.  I probably would not have made that last statement if I really was in love with the V-Strom like you sound like you are with your T, but I wanted a different bike with cornering ABS so that I would not have another accident caused by applying the brakes too strongly in a panic situation.  Good luck going forward.

Ben: Glad to hear your ok!! Sorry to hear about your T, what all was damaged? When that lady hit my T and knocked it over in that gas station parking lot at the NY rally a few years back the insurance paid me $1700.00 and all that was wrong with it were a few scratches on the crash bar on the right side and bottom of the right saddle bag.....hope its fixable and you can keep riding it.

Glad you are okay.  It's surprising how quickly accessories add up with $100 here and another there.  Most are not even available anymore except used.

I finally made it home today and have had a chance to look her over with a clear head.  Allan volunteered to bring her back for me last weekend, which was a huge relief not to have to worry about.  (Big nod to Allan for being a great friend)  I gave her a quick bath and the damage doesn't look quite as bad as I'd thought.  We went down on her right side and she just slid a ways, but didn't flip over or anything.  I think the single wheel trailer on it's side must have acted like a rudder.

The crash bars, windshield, saddlebag, and my luggage took the force of the fall and slide.  The right spotlight  got a little mangled, but surprisingly, the light didn't even break.  My hitch got bent down pretty badly when the trailer hit the car.  That's the worst of it.  Forks, tank, seat, engine all seem fine.  Haven't tried to start it. I'm trying to be patent and wait for the insurance company to get back to me.
