This frame is marked 1979 Honda 750 on the support behind the neck in black magic marker, will it work with a 78 or earlier or is it marked wrong?

I have seen a DOHC in a SOHC frame so why would it not work the other way too?

Good luck on the paper chase,
two options you have are,
1) take a trip to vermont and get paperwork there, anything over 15 yrs old just needs a bill of sale.
2) replace the neck with a donor.neck at the rake and stretch you want for the right stance
I lied its three...
3) Jump through the hoops in your state.

SOHC motor is wider.  You can put a DOHC in a SOHC frame using spacers, but not the other way around.  I don't think Amen made any DOHC-only frames.  That looks to me like a SOHC, but it'll be easy to check just bring a tape measure and check the width of the front mounts.

I have a DOHC in a SOHC AMEN hardtail frame. It fits but had to use some spacers on 2 of the motor mounts and then had to trim/modify the chain case cover. I agree with JLeather, I dont think AMEN ever made a DOHC frame. I can take some measurements of the motor mount spacing on mine later today as the motor is currently out of mine.
