I haven't been on a plane since i was pregnant!

Trip to FL beginning of June with dd and my mom.

What is the "best" site or way for booking tickets these days? (Boston to Ft. Lauderdale--and we'll be meeting my mom there who is coming in on JetBlue)

Thanks!

I usually start with Expedia or Travelocity. If I find a good flight, I then go back and check the airlines website just to be sure there isn't anything better on there. I know I don't always get the best deal but I do look around quite a bit. I also know there are certain travel days that give you a better deal. I think my MIL told me that if you leave on a Tuesday and return on a Monday you can get a better deal. Not 100% sure so please don't quote me on that. I will be interested to hear what other people say too!
Good luck and it sounds like you and your family have a wonderful trip to look forward to!

just bought tickets to Europe for July/Aug today and so excited. Used Cheaptickets.com (they were not cheap...)

In the past have used
Expedia.com
Hotwire.com
Cheapoair.com
Recently discovered Vayama.com (looks great, never used it. In the end cheaptickets had the better deal)

Tara21,

I like Kayak. It searches multiple sites all at once (uncheck the "use priceline" etc. or you'll get a bunch of other windows opening, which is really annoying IMO), and lets you specify if you are flexible up to 3 days before/after your chosen date so will search on those too and you can pick the cheapest days. It doesn't, though, and to my knowledge neither do any other search engines, search Southwest, which I've had good luck with and I'm pretty sure they fly out of Boston. A big plus is that on SW bags fly free, whereas you can otherwise pretty much count for sure on paying at least $25 extra to check each bag (so don't forget to add that in when you're comparing fare differences). For Southwest as far as I know you have to go direct to their website.

Happy travels! If you want info. on a great (IMO) alternative to a car seat for travel with a LO, let me know.

Best wishes,
Alex

it doesn't check some of the independents. There was an article in NYT last weekend about the comeback of the travel agent. It said that agents always found the best price, even when the fee is included. Fees begin at $25. Plus an agent has your back if something goes wrong (i.e., you're stuck on a long, unplanned layover in the airport, the agent can make calls on your behalf and maybe get you into a club or get you a meal).

Flying in to F.Lauderdale I would check out Spirit Airlines .... They are a super cheap airline company and may fly out of an airport close to you. Other than that, I tend to use Orbitz.

Hi,
Like others, I tend to start on Kayak or Expedia.

However, as others have noted, those sites usually don't include the independents, like Jet Blue, Southwest, etc. So I always check those as well.

Then after I get a sense of what the prices are & who has the best schedule for my family, I ALWAYS book through the original airline site. So, if the Kayak website shows the best flight/price combo to be on Alaska Air, I then open a browser page to Alaska Air, find those specific flights & book it directly. I remember a consumer reports article a ways back about limits of consumer protections when booking through expedia etc, as well as problems in notifying customers of schedule changes & cancellations. When I book through the airline itself, I know they will contact me with schedule changes or they will be on the hook if they have screwed up my travel.

So, basically, I use kayak to find me the prices, then I book directly.

Lately, my credit card has a special site (Ultimate Rewards, through Chase) that acts like expedia, and I get extra points if I book through the site. I checked prices against expedia & they were in the same ballpark or less, so now I'm trying to book that way. I just booked our Memorial Day trip to see the inlaws through UR so we'll see how well that works!

Oh, and DD has her own set of frequent flyer accounts so she gets credit for flights as well.

I use the sites like travel ah city dot com to shop around, but always purchase directly from the airline that shows the best deal.

One time, my husband booked with the website I mentioned above, and changing the ticket for a last minute change at the airport was a nightmare. You just couldnt get them on the phone easily!! I dont know if that is a normal experience, but taught me to never use them.

Have fun with your mom!!

It is a new travel website with competitive prices. They offer flights, vacation packages, cruises, hotels and car rentals.
My family lives abroad also purchase tickets from them as their prices are even better than the local Travel Agents Abroad , however Tripsetc accepts US and Canadian issued redit cards only.
