I'm going to be in NY later this month for a workshop, and I'm thinking about coming out to Rochester to scout around and see if it's a place we'd want to live when I finish my program. Would love to have a tour guide!

I can't remember her first name** (yes I do - see below! ) but I can picture her and her gorgeous family...a son who was born a few years after Ava. Handsome DH - and of course mom herself was beautiful. What WAS her name - ? Italian last name...Italian-American family...it's all on the tip of my tongue. She was always so kind. She hasn't posted in years, though - you may no longer have her contact information. I think her last name begins with 's' -not sure. And I'm pretty sure she's from that area.

Is ndn from the Rochester area, too - ?

How exciting!! If you do end up there, let me know - there is a person I know from DD's school who just accepted a position at one of the independent schools there. I don't see a current listing for a librarian, but maybe by the time you move (if you move) that will have changed!

Edited to add: was Ava's mom's name RENEE???
**Edited again: It was Rene, and her dd's name was Ava Rose. Just found an old post by her - there was Jackie's Ava, and Rene's Ava, whose birthday is the same as your parents' anniversary. She emailed you at one point to send a photo of her DD so that you could post it. I am almost positive that Rene lives in/near Rochester.

Hope this is helpful!!

and she wrote me once but I don't recall which area of NY she lived in. NDN is now in CT, I think. You have quite some memory!

I went ahead and booked my flight sans Western NY trip. I just felt too unsure of making that long side trip alone. It's just 5 hours from Detroit, which we visit yearly, vs. 8 hours or so from NYC.

But I might apply for a job in Buffalo! It's a stretch for me. They would have to be scraping to accept me without the 2y f/t experience.

I just hit the 'search' button and used 'Ava' as a key word -- that's how I found the rest of the details (such as your parents' anniversary/Ava's birthday. Just to show you how bad my memory is, I forgot my OWN anniversary last week. [to be fair, I've been incredibly preoccupied with a project and other worries, but still - that's a significant date!]).

Well, shoot. I'm sorry there's no one in the area who could have helped you. I wasn't able to see the job link - it took me to the UB page but not a specific listing. And I hope I didn't diminish your studies by mentioning a librarian position. I know the title is different now (library sciences?) but I'm not sure what the position is called now...so I used the old-fashioned term.

Sending you the best of luck --how exciting to be taking these steps toward new goals!! And yes, the position you mentioned might be a stretch, but there is growth, flexibility, inspiration and excitement in stretching -- and those are GREAT qualities for someone to bring to the table. If someone wasn't stretching and was tooooo comfy, why, she may be a little too laid-back, if ya know what I mean.

It varies by state. They're called school librarians here, and media specialists in some other states. Also instructional technology ??? in some states. I'll let you know what happens! Thanks!

Do you know if job prospects are pretty decent for librarians, teachers and engineers? Is the cost of living reasonable? Good schools?

We're looking for greener pastures.

(Weren't you in Australia a year or two back? Was it wonderful?)
