sleep away camp! It all happened very quickly - and it was very strange in that I just decided to apply for it just to see what would happen, as these 'jobs' don't come around vey often...anyway, I filled out the preliminary online paperwork then had to write a couple of small essays, and give some references... and it's official!

They want everyone to have all the vaccinations current. My parents did not keep good records so I have been trying to piece together my past history and then I found a stack of papers that had some of my labs for immunities. It looks like I will need a couple of vaccines, so I'm not looking forward to that... One is a hep A, and that is a little odd since its more for dealing with fecal matter ??? so I'm not about that one?

We were concerned about doing the vaccines for DD (I know it's a sensitive topic) so we did them, but at a slower pace ... so there are a couple that DD is behind on, (and we actually forgot about completing them) ---------now I guess we will have to, but even if we give her the vaccine now, a couple of them need 2 doses, and they need to be 6 months apart to have a complete series. I'm not sure what to do?

The list is quite long for packing so I have been busy trying to get situated and then everything needs to be labeled!!

I am excited and nervous at the same time. DD is excited - it will be a great experience, I hope.

Would love to hear any packing tips and how you would handle the vaccine issue above?

Thanks!

since those need to be 6 months apart, you'll just need to ask the camp if they'll still let her participate.

Your hep A: I would imagine that at camp, hand-washing can sometimes be difficult, and lacking parental supervision, kids might consider it optional, so personally, I'm in favor of the vax.

I also did my own schedule with dd's vaccines and don't remember any of them needing 6 months between doses. What is dd still needing?

I imagine you have some paperwork that you've used for school? Does camp require different vaccines than schools?

Also, depending on your state, there are forms you can access for religious exemptions.

But, yes, as KM said, I'd make a doctor's appt. for dd asap and get going on them. If they only need 2 months, as many do, you still have time to get them both in....If they need more time, well, then, I guess you need to talk with doctor and/or camp...I hope it works out fine!

Since we decided to hold off on some of the vaccines we have an exemption for school, which they accept. Camp seems very strict and they are not going to accept it. She has some shots but not all. We can do the shots but a couple require a series and they are 6 months apart and so even if we got the 1 shot she really isn't fully covered - I don't want to raise a red flag and ask about it as they might be a problem.... and yes camp does require different from schools since they are "living" together.

Thanks for any thoughts

Found the above online from other moms facing a similar dilemma.

Hope it all works out for you!

Sounds like it will be a great experience. My friend who volunteers at overnight camp always packs alot of her own snacks. She doesnt often like to eat what the campers are eating! And of course, lots of bug spray! I remember how excited she was when she bought a bug shirt for use in the evenings. She was never sure when she would be able to do laundry, so she packed alot of very casual shorts (I think she had to wear the camps t-shirt to identify herself) and undies she could wash in the sink if she had to.

As for the vaccines, I would just tell them that youve done all you can, but you have to follow the drs schedule for the ones that take a while to complete. Sounds like they are following a school district vaccine schedule? But even at our district, hep A isnt yet required. My pedi keeps pushing it because he makes the argument that if the kids travel where there is unclean water or go a restaurant where the chef has hep A and is preparing food, theyre covered. But I still havent gotten it for them....

Hope you have an excellent 4 weeks!
