i was so anxious to figure out if bjs was really more exp than walmart. it seems like it is. it feels like it is. but what i found in my research, it isnt! walmart is more exp than bj's, for the items i regularly purchase. i wrote down the price, quantity, and price per quantity for the items at bj's, and then i took my list to walmart to compare. also, i did not factor in coupons, but bj's often times offers store coupons for most of the following items. and, you can couple the store coupon with a manufacturer coupon, making bj's and even better deal.

here's a quick list of items i found cheaper at bj's:
dawn (esp the apple blossom scent--much cheaper at bj's)
palmolive
scott toilet tissue
snuggle
downy
bounty paper towels--and bj's towels are even cheaper!

the tide was approx the same price, but $0.07 higher per pound at bj's. however, bjs has store coupons for it very often (almost monthly), making the price at bj's (with coupon) cheaper. and, you can couple a manufacturers coupon with it, which i find are always available.

items i did not check, but will next time (i will let you all know):
kleenex (also a great item for store coupon, and manu coupon)
windex (bj's lists the per oz. price, walmarts lists the per qt. price)
cascade
v-8 (small cans)
5 oz cups

Our competitor to Walmart would probably by Target. Or one of the "clubs" such as Sam's or Costco. I have a Costco membership, but it gets really expensive to go in there and "stock up" on things only to forget about them in the back of the closet and they expire. You know, like 12 cans of tomato sauce when I only really needed one. So I'm careful what I buy there, but consistent good deals include pullups and wipes.

but like i was saying to km, do the comparison before you rule it out. it might be worth the trip. i will def keep comparing items--like cereals, and bjs DEF has a great price on milk! so does target, actually.

i know you only needed one can of tomatoes, but think about how many you use in a year. the one thing i do find with bj's they have a more popular" flavor of items. for instance, we use the no salt diced tomatoes, and they dont carry it... or, ds and dd arent so so crazy about the strawberry nutrgrain bars or strawberry yogurts, and their combo packs always include strawberry flavored bars and yogurts... oh well.

Sam's is our only choice, and after being members for 1 year, we decided it wasn't worth it for us.

I wish Costco would come. We are finally getting Whole Paycheck. Now if we could also have Trader Joe's, Ikea, Costco, and maybe BJ's, my shopping life would be complete!

I just checked Amazon subscribe and save. It's .079/per 100.

I also checked when I last ordered and see that one 20-pack of rolls has lasted me a year. So, did the math and Amazon comes out to $2.40 more per year for me than BJs. For me, the convenience of its coming to my door, not spending any time shopping for it, no car/gas use, and keeping me away from other unneeded purchases is more than worth $2.40, but if I were in BJ's anyhow, well, then, as Alex (?) said above, little savings can add up.

Where do you buy toilet paper?
Seriously, I buy so much stuff there! Prices aren't always better though, so I have to be careful and not get sucked in to the whole warehouse shopping experience.
Prescriptions are always cheaper there, I get mine there and I pay cash which winds up being less than my co-pay.
