There's Always a Bigger Fish

As far as scenery goes, the Valley of the Rare-Hertz is similar to the rest of Zi. There is something else however, a strong aura is emitted here called the 'Rare-Hertz'. The Rare-Hertz is an aura that causes Zoids and Organoids to go crazy and attack anything in sight. Zoids however, come with something called a 'Pulse Guard' to protect against this; Organoids do not.

She was never going to get used to this place. It was as cavernous and unending as she remembered from her much, much younger days. Every corridor ended with another one, and more than once she had found herself lost in the vastness of it. Six months had passed and she still had not explored everything this place had to offer. She had stayed well away from the labs and dungeons and hangars. Instead, she had looked in attics and hidden doors. Grand ballrooms and libraries. The place could house half the continent, it felt like. Though her family had lived here for countless years, it did not feel lived in. The drop of a pin would echo through the empty halls.

The double doors of yet another ballroom creaked as they opened. They were massive, made of some type of oak. Scrolling designs weaved elegantly through the grains of wood, and the polish shined like new. Untouched.. It made her shiver.

Her shoes clacked against the marbled floor; it, too, gleamed in the dim light cast by the curtained windows. Though everything seemed unused, the fabrics of the furniture and windows hangings were crisp. Not a speck of dust lived on anything, and Vira wondered lightheadedly how Kurt had managed to pay anyone to clean this monstrosity of a room.

There was a piano tucked away in the back of the expanse, lonely and silent. For some reason, the sight of it made her sad. She walked towards it, running a finger along the fine black wood. Mahogany, perhaps. She had seen the dark wood in the forests around Zi. She pressed one of the porcelain keys, the note ringing out loud and pristine. When the last soulful echo of the chord faded, she heard another noise. An alien, out of place noise. The same noise her shoes made on the floor. Yet, Raven was not here. She had left him in one of the living areas to his own devices. Vais had been there, as had her organoids.

The clacking reverberated like little pin pricks of noise.

She turned around warily, having neither weapon nor help. If she had to flee, she would have to be quick and nimble. And fight. She could do that.. A form-- two forms? Materialized from the murky light-dark of the room.

They were.. animals? She froze. Then breathed a sigh of relief. They must have gotten in from somewhere.. Though she was unused to these types of creatures in a desert.

They stopped a bit from her, and she noticed they looked completely unafraid of her. One promptly sat back on its haunches, watching her with interest. It was quite beautiful. Even in the low light, its fur practically glowed illustriously, a color somewhere in between red and orange. Its paws were black, as if dipped in ink, its muzzle and chest and tail tip snow white. An eerie intelligence looked back at her as she stared, caught in its tawny eyes.

Then, it spoke.

"Hello there."

It spoke.. ? What the hell? Vira's head swam, and she looked at the thing funny, as if it had grown two heads.

The second's coat, long and plush and perfect, radiated a ghostly white. It seemed to float forward with its agile, delicate steps as it rounded the red, and scampered even closer to the woman. It scanned her from the tips of her toes, to the top of her head, and finally settled its vibrant golden eyes back down on her blue ones. Its large triangular ears swiveled forward, the slits in its eyes expanding to focus intensely in the dim light.

"Aww," came the second's voice, quiet, tender, and feminine. "You look lonely." She cast her yellow gaze back to the red one, "Oh Miska, you were right. She is all alone!" The thing giggled softly and peered back up to the woman, her long white tail flicking back and forth. Her teeth poked out in a vulpine smile.

"Yes yes, where is your dragon?" Her head tilted with her questions. Her pink tongue licked across her brilliant teeth as her pupils constricted to the smallest slivers.

The male.. er, Miska? flicked his tail at her enthusiasm. When Vira did nothing else but stare blankly at them, he snorted.

"Come now, I know you are acquainted with odd creatures," he paced a bit closer to her, side by side with the other fox. "I am Miska. This is Thea. And we will reiterate: where is your dragon?"

Vira blinked then, and the fox watched as clarity cleared the fog of confusion from her expression. However, she did not reply as expected.

"Wonderful. More weird shit. Keeps piling up," she said, sarcastically. "Don't know any dragons, though, sorry."

Miska's maw spread into a grin. Oh how he enjoyed when they squirmed and were obtuse, "Now, my dear, we have felt the presence of not one, but two of the beasties. One is a dragon, or drakonas. The other is a wolf, or a vilkas."

He watched her face shift into a grimace.

"Why should I tell you anything? You sneaked into my home and have accosted me. Doesn't seem very polite to me."

“Why? To be rid of them, of course!” Thea threw her head back and laughed, as if it were an obvious answer.

But Vira’s lack of enthusiasm seemed to leave her baffled.

“Oh my. You really do care for them.” Thea looked to the pristine marble flooring for a moment in thought, then slowly padded even closer.

“Surely you know how the beasts feed on the very minds of their hosts?” She spoke quietly again, as if to hide the grand secret she was unveiling to the human from other prying ears. “Don’t you want to live a long life with a functioning mind?”

She sighed and looked back at the stunning male, puzzled.

“The boy is aware his days are running low. We should go to him. The vilkas has been feeding and gaining strength.” Her eyes snuck back to the woman at this, her tail flicking in anticipation of her reaction.

"Rid of them.. ?"

Miska saw her face was uncomprehending, and she darted a glance between both of them. She probably thought them not up to the task, and he snorted. But, Vira's attention wasn't on him anymore, and though Thea's approach was inelegant, he watched the girl closely.

She was staring at Thea, the look on her face about as frightening as a human's could be.

"You don't know anything about it," she snarled, forgetting just for a moment that these foxes were not animals at all. "Vais would have told me these things. And.. and, rid of him? You can't possibly think you could harm him."

Miska's ears swiveled down with disdain.

"While it's true your dragon is old and powerful, he is less of a threat than the wolf. He has wandered around far too long, we will kill him. After all, he is killing you right now. He has killed millions. The other one is killing your friend, rapidly at that."

Vira glanced away, and she knew that Sevisse was doing damage to Raven. She had to be, Kurt had gone loony in a matter of hours after the beast had awakened.

Miska stood and snorted. "Well, we have given you fair warning, child."

As he turned to leave, Vira stopped him.

"Wait. What do you mean he is killing me?" Her voice was laced with suspicion, but Miska still grinned anyway.

Vais was unprepared, to say the least, for the sudden flaring presence of Sevisse. If he was any less of a creature, he might have squawked with surprise. She pushed against his mind like a burning ember, and he wondered what sort of desperation she had found that made her reach out to the very thing that wanted so badly to kill her. Warily, he let her in.

"Do you feel that?!"

Her voice was shrill, and he thought she must have gone insane.

"What?" He said aloud, for Raven was near him, and he knew Sevisse's flare up and voice could be heard by him, too.

"Rokas!"

Vais snorted, now sure she was losing her mi--

Sevisse exploded out of Raven, materializing in the middle of the room, her fur bristling, and her tail puffed up. Her eyes were glowing so fiercely they out shone the overhead lights in the room. Before Vais could even think to pounce on her, she peeled off like a bolt of lightning, and she hid under the couch, her tail poking out from the underside.

Vais could only stare at her dumbfounded, and he wondered if she was certifiably insane, or if she had actually felt the presence of a fox.

“Shadowbeasts are parasites, child. Like all living things, they must eat to survive,” she added cheerily. She twisted to follow Miska, but not before offering one last grin with a sparkle in her eye. “Ask your dragon what he eats.”

Raven startled at the beast’s voice, nearly dropping the book he had been reading. “The hell?” His gaze shot to Vais, “Who’s Roka—?” He felt her presence change and exit and he sprang to his feet in alarm, knocking a small tower of books off the chair in the process.

Aaand before he could react she was under the couch.

He found himself caught between fight or flight, completely frozen, wide eyes darting back and forth between Sevisse under the couch and Vais. His instinct was to call Shadow- but he knew better than to bring the organoid into the mix.

Is that her!?

Shadow’s voice called out in his mind, and he nearly facepalmed. He could hear the whirl of the beast’s footfalls approaching in the hallway.

“Stay there!”

The noise paused as Shadow obeyed.

Worry suddenly seized him and he looked to Vais with great concern. “Where’s Vira?”

"Not roka.. Rokas. Fox. Beast killer," Sevisse said, her voice muffled by cushion. Vais flicked his gaze towards the sofa.

"Yes, while that's true, a rokas has not been seen, by any beast I know, for thousands of years. It's highly unlikely one would be here, and no, I did not feel that." He stalked towards the sofa, and Sevisse tucked her tail in, her whimper vibrating the fabric.

"I have felt them, near Braxis," she said, and Vais paused. The more he thought, the more valid her fear became. Why else would she take form before him? He remembered tales of beasts forgetting their grievances to battle rokas.

"Have you ever fought one? My father did," her voice dipped a bit. "He died. He was a leopard."

Vais sat back and grumbled a bit.

"I have encountered four. Three are dead, the other escaped. They are rare, vilkas, how can you be sure? And why would you bother warning me when they could just kill me?"

Sevisse poked her head out from under the couch.

"Because I have felt two, and I am not vain enough to claim I could hope to survive against even one. The one I felt before.. male, I think? He is old, like you.." She pulled herself free from the couch, her fur still bristling, her tail curling around her paws. "I will honor beast law, if you will."

Vais growled lowly at her, and glanced at the other human in the room, belatedly aware he had asked a question.

"Vira is.. coming this way," he replied, watching Sevisee and her body language. The wolf looked smaller when she was not trying to be intimidating, and Vais was reminded again of her very young age. He sighed.

"I am also not vain to say I would have trouble with just one," he told her, and she shifted slightly, ready to pounce back into her host if the beast even tipped a scale in her direction. "But, this does not change the fact that you are residing in a host that is unwelcoming to you, and will remain so. This also does not change the other fact that I will slaughter you at any given opportunity after the threat of the rokas, if they are truly here, is gone."

Sevisse nodded enthusiastically, and Vais grumbled and turned to Raven.

"Beast law is as follows: grievances in the face of rokas threat shall be set aside until they are terminated. If all parties agree to collude against the enemy, no beast shall infringe on the safety of either his fellow beasts or their hosts. To break beast law is forbidden, as we do not have many to govern us. To do so shall bring the elders down upon the oath breaker, and they will be tortured and maimed before all beasts."

Vais growled at the human, lowering his head to eye level.

"Rokas are beast killers. Since Vira is not here, and she is your beast, you are bound by our law, as well. She has already given her oath, but if you'd rather I kill her, speak now. You must not attempt to harm the vilkas once I agree unless she herself takes action against myself, or Vira."

"Which I will not!" Sevisse piped up. "It is law," she said vehemently, turning her head this way and that, warily.

Raven stared at Sevisse, still dumbfounded.

“You’re telling me there’s something out there worse than you… and it’s a fox.”

At this Shadow first peeked into the room with a bright blue optic, then nosed the door open.

As Raven listened he could only gawk.

His pupils constricted and his muscles tensed, his features twisting into a scowl. Her plea only infuriated him, and the fact Vais seemed willing to cooperate further poured fuel on his fire.

Shadow soon spotted the wolf and dashed inside, putting himself between his human and the beast. But Raven cut off his efforts, stepping out and around the organoid and hurling the book in his hand at the wolf, “Fuck you! For six months I’ve dealt with you! Six months I’ve had the most fucked up nightmares of my entire life. I’ve wanted to do the most sadistic shit, and I know It wasn’t me coming up with those ideas!”

Emboldened by his fury he stomped closer to the wolf. “I finally have something worth living for, but I can literally feel my sanity- just- evaporating! I get more and more neurotic over the stupidest shit and I know it’s your fault!” Oh how he wanted to tear her pelt from her muscles! To extract her nails from her paws one by one and gouge her eyes from her sockets! To inflict every horrific image she assaulted him with in his sleep back upon her in reality!

Shadow only watched, some form of disappointment welling up inside. He sensed Raven had been struggling more and more, but the pilot always refused to elaborate when Shadow questioned him. Even when he couldn’t sleep, or refused to go back to sleep, he never told Shadow anything. He only wanted the organoid close and he always went to great lengths to avoid Vira in those moments. Shadow couldn’t fathom why his chosen human wouldn’t share his struggles with him, especially when he was more privy to the details of Raven’s situation than most others in their party.

At this point Raven was inches from Sevisse’s muzzle, her glowing amber eyes lighting his features. “You’re nothing but a burden. At least Vais paces himself and protects Vira, but you fuck me over every chance you get! Give me one good reason why we should help you!”

Sevisse snapped her fangs together and hissed in his face, thoroughly unimpressed.

"Because I am a shadowbeast. That is what I was bred to do," she said, her voice hard. "Don't preach to me about "sadistic", boy. You spent the greater part of your life killing in the name of your country; you took away many peoples' "something worth living for". You stalked and harassed the Liger boy out of pure spite. Quite frankly, I don't want," she stood, "to hear," she pushed her muzzle against his nose and snarled, "your shit!"

The glow of her eyes intensified, "I have seen what you are made of, and you are every bit as cruel as you claim me to be."

Vais growled low at her, and she subsided.

"To answer your reason, one rokas could feasibly kill the drakonas and I. The drakonas is old, an elder. Just like viruses gain immunity to antibiotics over time, so too, do rokas become impervious to beasts. It is the one instance where the older a shadowbeast is, the more able a rokas is to kill it. So technically, you little shit, I am the one helping you and your little slut."

Raven didn't back down as she pressed into him. In fact, he evenly matched her intensity, and it was Vais' growl, accompanied with Shadow's, that stopped him from going further. But Raven's full attention remained zeroed in on Sevisse, though he hadn't quite moved to try to pull out her eyeballs yet.

Her insults did cause some involuntary eye twitching though.

"Number one, I am not like you. Number two, we've established you're the only slut here. Number three, if these rokas things want you two," he flicked his gaze to Vais briefly, "the way I see it, you have to leave us if you want to live. Why on Zi should I agree to this!? So you both can just keep on eating away at us?!"

Shadow rumbled again, Raven, Vira will want to save Vais. She cares deeply for him.

Raven growled something and spun around to face Vais, his voice lower now, "I know. But this isn't fair to Vira. Have you forgotten? She doesn't even know what you're doing to her," he was stern, but not nearly as angry with the dragon as with the wolf. "Plus, if something can kill that bitch," he pointed to Sevisse, "I say thank Eve for that, bring it on."

"Oh, we are more alike than you think. Also. How am I the slut when she's the one you're fu--"
"Anyway!"

Vais hissed at the both of them. Honestly.. children, the both of them. Perhaps they were more well matched than they had initially thought. He groaned a bit, wanting nothing more than to shove his head under the sofa and forget they all existed.

"Yes, it's not. But I must live, too," he responded, pragmatically. "I have a feeling from her she had inferred that I am not good for her health, as she knows I am a parasite, and she saw what it did to her father." The dragon sighed further, choosing instead to speak to the boy's organoid.

"Rokas are dangerous to us. They resist every shred of mental attack we can manage to throw at them. They are quick, and their claws and fangs alone do more damage to myself than any other thing in this universe. It won't matter to them if I am amicable to my host, they will kill the both of us without discriminating."

Sevisse chose this moment, in between glaring at Raven, to pipe up. "So, dumbass, if something is capable of killing the drakonas, it is sure as hell capable of killing me. But he's an old man, they are more able to elude him and do damage. He's fought them before, they know him. They don't know me." Her tail twitched slightly with pride.

Raven, Shadow eyed his human through one bright optic, rumbling something like an exasperated sigh. Listen to them. I know you don’t like the harm they inevitably cause, and neither do I. But not only will Vira be incredibly upset if something happens to Vais, but we need him now more than ever, Shadow dipped his head to be eye level with Raven and motioned subtly to Sevisse. You know this is true. Especially if she is wearing on you like you say.

The man clenched his fists, his gaze falling to the floor.

If things are as bad as you say they are, then I implore you, Shadow poked the human’s cheek with his muzzle after he remained quiet.

“Fine,” Raven finally agreed, though quietly, “I agree to your ‘beast law.’” His piercing look found Sevisse as he turned back and approached the wolf again, “But I am not like you. I recognize where I fucked up, and I try to right my wrongs, one way or another. You’re old as dirt and you still wipe out life at any chance you get.”

Shadow rumbled approvingly, and shook his frame like a dog, ridding himself of some accumulated tension. A book on the floor caught his eye, the one Raven had thrown, having ricocheted off the couch. ‘Diseases of the Mind’ was stamped across the blue leather in a silver foil. It was well read, bends and cracks permanently part of the cover. He knew that besides keeping fit, exploring the castle with Vira, and, er, exploring Vira, Raven had spent an abnormal amount of time in books over the past six months, but this one in particular left him feeling cold. And it looked thoroughly used. How had he not noticed it before, he wasn’t sure.

He would have to pester Raven about it later, he decided, but there were more pressing matters at hand.

How can we find the foxes before they find us?

"I am not old!" Sevisse spat, her fur bristling. "In fact, for my age, I have killed far less than a normal beast. That is why Kurt lived so lo--" she paused, as if she had said too much. Vais flicked a look at her and she grumbled, hunching her shoulders a bit. A commotion at the door drew her attention, and Vira, clearly having been running, had to use the door frame to stop, her heels sliding on the polished floor. She took a brief second to curse eloquently down at it.

"Vais! There's these weird fox things and--"

Vais was looking at her. Raven was sitting there reading? and Sevisse sat a bit apart from him, staring at her like it was a normal occurrence for her to be sitting on the floor like a lap dog. She spluttered for a moment then, "What the fuck?!"

Blizzard peeked in from behind her, and they both moved further into the room, Blizzard glued to Vira's back.

"You don't have to tiptoe, little slut, I'm not going to eat you. I have an accord with your drakonas." Her tail flicked happily, and Vais was uncomfortable with her behavior. She annoyed him. Spiritually. Mentally. Physically. And she apparently had a crush on him. The vilkas had distracted him from the fact that his host was eyeing him with an expression halfway between distrust and anger. Yet, it was fleeting, and by the time Vira reached him, her face was blank. She ignored Sevisse for the moment, as Vais seemed to not be mauling her for a reason.

"Foxes," she told him. "They came to me in one of the rooms. They asked about you, told me some things.. They want to kill you."

Vais nodded, as if this information wasn't a surprise.

"Did you catch their names?" He asked.

"Yeah. There was a red one, named Miska. And a white one. Thea." Vira watched as recognition dawned on Vais, and she shivered a bit at the noise that came from his jaws.

Hearing the frenzy of their approach, Raven spun to face the door expectantly. He glanced around to each creature present, cringing as he realized how weird everything would look to Vira.

Under better circumstances, he would have laughed at her reaction. It was difficult to get any reaction from her. He pressed his lips in a thin line to stop the smile she evoked, amused regardless the situation.

They’re here? In the castle? Shadow snorted.

“Stop it,” Raven snapped at the wolf again, stopping himself from reaching out to strike her by hooking his thumbs into his back pockets. He wasn’t sure if smacking counted as harm, but he didn’t want to risk it. Wouldn’t want the shadowbeast gods to maul everyone.

“You saw them?” He scanned Vira over thoroughly once, noting she seemed completely fine. Not harming Vira was one point for them in his book. “…Are they regular foxes?” He raised an eyebrow, casting a side glance to Sevisse, “Extra fluffy?” He still had trouble with the imagery of tiny fluffy foxes killing either shadowbeast.

Shadow shied away from Vais at his reaction, a hint of dread rippling through his body. Raven also felt a bit unsettled at the lack of authority and power the dragon had responded with.

Tell us, Shadow looked about as worry bubbled within, as if searching for the predators lurking among them. How have your kind killed the rokas in the past?

Raven looked thoughtfully back to Vira, “What did they tell you?”

Sevisse made several faces, moving her jaws in a mocking manner. Vira, adept at ignoring creatures from her years with Hisk, shrugged at Raven.

"They looked pretty normal to me. Perhaps a little larger than a regular one, I can't be sure. They weren't particularly aggressive towards me, they walked up and began.. talking to me.." She scratched her cheek, as if saying it aloud would make them think her a little loony. "They told me their names, then asked where my dragon was. Said to "ask him what he ate"."

Vais cursed, but Vira waved a hand. "I already gathered that you weren't just capable of living inside of me without repercussions."

The dragon dipped his head, and something private passed between them, for Vira's expression softened. He looked up when she approached, and she patted his muzzle affectionately.

"You have done more for me than anyone. The fact that you feed off of me is.. alarming, but not really a surprise. They wanted me to be angry with you, I think. To cause discord. I don't think they're aware that we are as good of friends as we are."

Vais rumbled and pressed back into her palm, the strength of it pushing Vira back a step, and she grinned at him. "You should have told me, but I understand why you didn't."

Vais nodded, then addressed Shadow.

"We killed them by fighting. They are not immune to our talons or fangs. There was a "war" once, between us. The rokas put "bounties" on beasts, and they came like swift assassins. Never have they been so bold, because while they are quick and strong, they only have one animal likeness: fox. Beasts choose their forms at inception, or birth."

"They have another form," Sevisse supplied. "One they use when their cunning and stealth can't net them a kill. They grow many tails, become larger.. Their muzzles elongate. They look like nightmare fuel."

She shuddered a bit, "My mother showed me one in a memory. The one that killed my father. It was white."

Vais saw it in her mind, too, and he growled again. "They have plenty of those silly bounties on my head, as they do with any elder. The fact I am as old as I am is infuriating for a rokas."

Months ago, after he learned of how Vais was damaging her, Raven desperately wanted to warn Vira of the impact the creature had on her. But as time passed, and the beast proved his good intentions in spite of his parasitic nature, Raven was conflicted. In the end he resolved to honor his word to Vais, and had not revealed anything to Vira.

Now, as the truth crept out, he felt a mix of guilt and relief. Guilt for hiding truth from Vira. Relief that the secrecy was over. But Vais was a good soul in his opinion, worthy of his respect, and he did not regret waiting for the beast to say something on his own, even if provoked by the rokas. If Vira would forgive Vais, surely she would forgive him if she knew he was aware.

He watched the pair before him with a long exhale, the weight of secrecy easing off his chest.

He longed to talk to Vira about it more, and perhaps tell her about the weird shit he had been seeing more and more of lately- the signs that Sevisse was eroding his mind quickly. Yet, he couldn’t decide if he really wanted to bring it up or not. He wanted to confide in her the nagging dark reality he faced, to share the weight with the one person he trusted- to just be fully honest- and yet.. he wanted to protect her from that reality all the same, for as long as possible. He knew that, someday, it would come crashing down on them both. It was foolish to pretend everything was fine. It obviously wasn’t. Yet, ignorance was bliss.

Whether or not he was successful at concealing his conflict from Vira, he was unsure.

And his gaze lingered on her, even as the others prattled on about monster foxes and wars of old. He was barely listening to them.

If these rokas can be harmed by us, and they’re already in the castle, we should hunt them down before they hunt us. I’d rather we not get separated and ambushed, Shadow clacked his claws against themselves. Sevisse, you said you could feel them. Are either of you able to pinpoint them or their general location? He angled a blue eye at his human, pondering the best solution for their safety.

(The hell is this layout.. GRosS! now take some fluff, cause I am fluffy.)

In the past, Vira's first priority was never Raven. He ranked somewhere between "gotta avoid the Rare Hertz" and "call Razor to go get blasted" in importance. Back then, he had been an emotionally repressed, thorny boy that left her caught between wanting to punch his stupid face or scream obscenities at him as they inevitably fought and trashed their poor Zoids. It had taken a good year or two for her to move past hating his existence and seeing him as an.. acquaintance? They had been caught in so many unfortunate situations, whether it was getting stabbed or shot or chased by psycho organoids or teased about liking one another by crazy, drunk friends. Even through all that, she had always been good at reading him. Well, sort of. She was pretty dumb about his feelings. Though in her defense, she was pretty dumb about hers back then, too.

So, looking at him, she knew something was bothering him, and that something was not some nonsense about foxes. While their two beasts and organoids made sense of it, she could make sense of what was happening with him.

"Hey," she said, poking a finger into the fabric of his sleeve, twisting it and pulling him closer. "You remember when we were socially retarded?"

Oh, yeah. Back then she would rather kiss Llveth than even consider touching or.. talking to Raven.

"When we couldn't go five seconds without saying something mean and then duking it out for like six hours?" She grinned mischievously up at him. Geez, why did he have to be so tall?

"Even back then, when the sky would fall before we'd admit we were friends, I was pretty good at reading you. And I don't mean your mind." She reached up with the hand not occupied with his shirt and poked a finger on his temple. Unfortunately, she got a little distracted getting to touch his face, because honestly, who wouldn't? She wasn't tall enough to reach everything, but she was content to stroke his jaw and pray he didn't notice the ginormous pause in between sentences. Abruptly, she remembered she was trying to make a point here and moved her hand to prop on her hip.

"Um.. I was good at your face. Wait--" oh boy, she was still socially retarded. "Not that I was looking.. more than normal! Okay, maybe like lately, yes, 'cause holy crap, look at you."

She said that out loud, didn't she. Note to herself.. do not talk about Raven in front of Razor. Or Timber. Or Hisk. Or Nightmare cause he'd blab to Razor, who would then blab to Timber. Shit!

She was aware her face was hot, and with a groan she buried her face right into his said shirt.

"My point is," it came out muffled but legible, "what's wrong? Something is bothering you. You can tell me anything, you know, you don't have to hide it and worry about it on your own. You're not alone anymore.."

Raven was quiet as she drew him in and down memory lane. It wasn't a place he liked to visit on his own, but when she retold it, he almost looked back fondly on their spats. He tilted his head to the side in slight confusion, not entirely sure what she was even trying to say up to until the compliments rained down. "Holy crap look at me?" He felt some swell of pride at reducing Vira to a stammering hot mess without even trying, and it was only then his somber expression softened with the hint of a smile. If it had been any other day, he might have seized the moment.

Instead, he gently wrapped his arms around her and secured her to his chest with a firm squeeze, releasing a sigh tinged with melancholy as he rested his cheek on top of her hair.

It was the chatter of their companions and temporary frenemy that inspired a change, and he clenched his jaw remembering the wolf was in her physical form and not being shredded by Vais. His hand slid down Vira's arm to grip her wrist, and he tugged her along to the hallway from which she had previously entered.

Once out of earshot of the others he stopped. Locking his gaze with Vira's, his fingers traced down her jaw, then up again to tuck some stray hairs behind her ear. “Vira, I never cared much for living. But now that, well, we've been together for so long, I was hoping I could stick around awhile. ... But at this rate, I don’t know how long I’ll be considered sane. I see things when I'm awake now. Not just sleeping. I don’t know how long I’ll remember things... or how long I have left with you.”

He was quiet for a moment, his eyes darting back and forth between her own, and then he remembered her shadowbeast, and felt compelled to defend the creature. “Vais is a good soul. Sevisse, on the other hand, is hellbent on meeting a quota and I can feel it. She's moving fast. Vais doesn't know what to do," his gaze dropped in defeat, "I don't know what to do, and it's not fair to hide it from you."

"Ummm.. yes?" Her voice came out squeaky, and she thought her face might be as red as his Zoid. Fortunately, she was saved from spluttering out exactly how unfairly attractive she found him as he drug her out into the hallway. Maybe anyway.. her admittedly filthy brain confidently informed her she could tell him all about it when he got her into their room, under him and sufficiently riled up enough to say it to him without passing out from embarrassment. It took her a second to figure out they had stopped, and if the words he was saying weren't so dour, the half second of bewildered confusion about where they were would've been quite comical.

"O-oh.." Her brain delayed catching up to the mood, and she shifted a bit on her feet, emotional whiplash setting in. Holy crap, when had she morphed into a horndog? The next thought was, she was gonna kill him, and then the next was a flash of sadness, which was a whole hell of a lot more appropriate to the situation.

"Sorry," she said, though her blush didn't abate very much. The reality of their situation always lurked in the back of her mind, but hearing him clarify the effects he was feeling took the rest of the air out from under her. The fact that she couldn't relate at all to what was happening to him squeezed around her heart like a vice. She wasn't sure what to say, as unable to come up with a solution as Vais had been.

"Maybe," she started, quietly, "With this new dumb stuff going on, she'll not be as aggressive on you." Her hand twirled vaguely around at "this new dumb stuff", unaware she was really doing it. "But--but we'll figure something out, like we always do, right?" Her voice wavered alarmingly, the high highs of a moment ago clashing with this new low. She squashed herself inelegantly against his front, wrapping her arms around him tightly as much for her own comfort as his, her face again smushed in the fabric of his shirt.

"You're not going anywhere," she grit out, her tone fierce. "I won't let you. I won't let you forget, and if she won't leave you alone, I'll make her." His shirt did more than muffle her shaky voice, it absorbed her tears, too. She looked up at him accusingly, her glare watery.

"You've wrecked me," she accused, with no heat. But then her face softened, and she repeated, "We'll figure something out, Raven."

Raven mirrored her gesture and wrapped her tightly in his arms, her words offering some glimmer of hope, even though he had thoroughly played out all his options and none were bright.

Nevertheless, Vira's tenacity and resolve brought a smile to his lips.

But as her hot tears dampened the fabric of his shirt, the guilt welled up inside him. He knew what that was, and he instantly began to regret listening to Vais.

The tears in her eyes stabbed his conscious upon reveal. "Vira, I-" he loosened his grip to see her better, "I wasn't trying to 'wreck' you..? I was trying to preserve this for as long as possible," he admitted almost pleadingly, gesturing between the both of them with a nod.

"As far as this 'new dumb stuff' goes, all I know is this "beast pact" stops her from harming either of us until the Rokas threat is eliminated. Maybe I'll actually get decent sleep," he grinned down at her as if she should be as happy about it as he was. He had tried to hide his nightmares from her, but there was no way Vira was completely oblivious to the nightly occurrences.

Her wet stare and flushed features clawed at his heart again. Gently he lifted her jaw and wiped away the tears with his thumbs, "Please stop that," he pleaded with a slight grimace.

"Oh, and, sorry to disappoint you with the hallway stop," He offered an impish wink and devilish smile, "I know what you were thinking. You still blush."

"Oh, be quiet, silly. I meant that in the fondest of ways. I like it when you wreck me." ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

She nodded sagely, as if what she had said just wasn't the largest double entendre this side of Nyx. Poor summer child didn't seem to realize it, either, because her blush remained more or less muted.

"Maybe she'll stop being such an ass in the process too," she said, thoughtfully. "She seems to have a crush on poor Vais, which would be hilarious under other circumstances." The shadowbeast had grumbled privately to her about making the mistake of putting the idea in Sevisse's head, because now she pranced around like she had springs on her paws. ("Honestly, does she think I've never seen any other females in my life? Or that I would be the least bit interested in a whelp like her? Which I am not!") She could practically feel his obstinance radiating from the room over.

She was in the process of rubbing her cheek into his palm when he spoke, and she was pretty sure he'd be able to feel her face heat up, confirming his point.

"Sorry," she mumbled, but she was grinning brightly, wiping the remainder of her tear tracks away with her sleeves. "From what I've heard, a man doesn't usually drag his girl out of an occupied room for lengthy vertical conversation." Two could play at this game, and the look on her face couldn't be described as anything but sultry, but she wisely kept her hands to herself.

"Unfortunately, I don't think it would be wise to disappear for a couple of hours leaving the four of them to make any monumentous decisions. They'd blow up my house or steal our Zoids or rob a bank or something.."

“Shit." That look. "Well aren't you a whole new kind of dangerous now,” growled Raven, his thumb firmly brushing across her bottom lip in the process of forcing his own hands off her, “But you’re right. ... Unfortunately.”  He slowly backed away from her to lean on the wall, crossing his arms with a sigh of frustration. He glared back at the room, intentionally avoiding eye contact with Vira so she couldn't tease him further with her feminine wiles.

“How the hell did we get here...” he muttered mostly to himself, eyeing Sevisse from a distance, though his mind kept jumping back to Vira and how he wished that moment-old encounter had gone. How it should have gone. “How do two people like us end up like this?”  "Fuck! I'm so distracted," he thought as he ran his hand through his hair. The gears were turning, and his gaze narrowed on the two shadowbeasts in their physical form. A poorly formed solution to their greater ordeal flickered in his mind, probably springing from Vira's earlier 'new dumb stuff' comment, but he considered it in their desperation. He mulled over it for a good moment, allowing the pieces to fall into place before finally speaking of it. “If we make Sevisse appreciate Vais or feel indebted to him, maybe she’ll at least slow down and act more like him. We need to fan that flame of hers. ... Maybe we should disappear for a few hours. For situational engineering purposes."

"Yup!" She replied cheerfully, winking, her eyes flicking to where he was looking. Sevisse had her two paws spaced out, pointing her muzzle at them. Blizzard had crept close to her--very close now that Vira was paying attention..--and was also pointing one of her talons down at the wolf's feet.

"I dunno," she replied, still watching her organoid. "I didn't think this "law" was actually anything substantial, but she's just sitting there having a chat with the three of them. Like all of them weren't gunning to rip her head off an hour ago."

Sevisse seemed to be in some kind of heated debate with Blizzard, their heads close. Vira wanted to smack a hand to her forehead at the weirdness of it, but by now, she thought she should be used to these kinds of shenanigans.

"Oh. I think she already "appreciates" Vais, so that shouldn't be too big of a problem." Even now, she could hear the dragon grumbling at the other beast, her tail flicking happily at him. She threw a sly look over at Raven at that last part, her lips curving back into that same smile from earlier.

"Then the most difficult part is done, and with this pact of theirs, they have to work together if they want to get out alive,” he smirked, “Sounds all too familiar if you ask me.” Raven glanced at her, raising an eyebrow with intrigue at her expression, “I-... I think it’s a recipe we should try?” That look. Again.

“Besides, between the four of them,” he gestured with his head back to the group, “they can pinpoint us anywhere in the castle. I say we ‘disappear’ and hunt some foxes to expedite this process.” In spite of his matter of fact phrasing, he continued to watch her, his mannerisms not quite aligning with his words.

After a thoughtful pause, he pushed off the wall to tower over her, his devilish intent smoldering in his lavender eyes again. “We haven’t gone exploring for a few days now, have we?”

"Man, they're gonna tear down the west wing or bring the roof down," she groaned, and the noise of an indignant hiss floated through the hallway. Vais almost came into the hallway with them, but he stopped at the door to glower dourly at the two other females in the room. Vira sighed, and then something crossed her mind.

"The hell is Hisk? He's more dangerous than all of them."

The organoid had made himself scarce since this morning. He had complained to her about feeling claustrophobic, and the castle bothered him in a way he couldn't explain. How any thing could get cramped in a place like this eluded her, but she had shrugged and went to explore without him.

Raven's idea seemed fun, but dangerous. "Umm, do you think it's a good idea for the two of us to go wandering off looking for two foxes capable of killing Vais?" It seemed rhetorical though, because her mouth shifted into a grin.

"Let's go. They cornered me in one of the ballrooms. That one with the big black doors over by the.. er. The big stairway with the angels on the banisters.. Good Lord we need to make a map of this place.."

Raven shrugged at her question as he began backing down the broad corridor.  "In all seriousness, I'd prefer we find them before they find us," yet in spite of being 'serious,' he wasn't quite able to wipe that mischievous look off his face. "I'd like to ambush them if possible." He finally broke eye contact to glimpse into other passing hallways with suspicion. "The foxes are more than likely looking for Vais and Sevisse rather than us. In some ways, we're safer distancing ourselves from them. We should stop by one of those little armories on our way, too."

This part of the castle, in hindsight, was poorly lit. How had she not noticed this when she was wandering here earlier? Maybe it had to do with the sun going lower; the nearest windows were embedded high above in the domed ceiling. The sky was smudged navy blue and pink. Was it really that late? She pushed open the door she had gone into earlier, the well polished wood making barely a whisper of sound. A cursory peek into the shadowed room showed nothing out of the ordinary, but even her sharp eyes couldn't distinguish any shapes in the far dark corners.

"I don't see anything in here," she said offhandedly to Raven. "They left from here, though. They came in through this door, I think, 'cause I was over by the piano." The said instrument remained lonely in its space over on the other side of the room. Eerily, Vira could almost still hear the echoing note of the key she had pressed. She shivered and pulled her head out of the door.

"When I get this business sorted out with this place, I vote we get the hell out of here and go live in your house with Skittles."

The banister she had talked of loomed behind them like a giant maw. The stairs flared out to both sides, the scrolling red tinted wood gleaming even in the low light. Cherubs with feathered wings sat along at various points, holding harps.

"It's beautiful, but it gives me the creeps.."

Creeping in alongside the woman and narrowing his eyes at the darkest corners, Raven was both disappointed and relieved that the creatures were nowhere to be found. He didn’t notice anything out of place either. The room was massive though, and he scanned it twice, and a third time. Nothing. He moved several steps down past her to peer at the edges not necessarily visible from their vantage point, and still nothing.

Vira’s suggestion seemed to surprise him, and he blinked up at her with some hybrid of confusion and delight on his face, “Y-you want to live there? ...with me?” He glanced around their surroundings briefly before locking gazes with her, “It’s pretty small compared to this.” This time, he felt the heat on his own face, which was a rarity these days. But he didn’t dare shy away from her sapphires, even as a genuine grin appeared on his features, “It is bright though. Not beautiful, but not creepy. Just needs some cleaning,” he shrugged rather cheerily, “Haven’t been there in quite awhile, actually. Skittles doesn’t have my standards.”

"You've lived here for the past six months with me," she said in return, smiling at his expression. "And if I had to pick between this monstrosity and the place you have, it wouldn't be here. If I yell at you from one side of the house, you need to be able to hear it from the other. You'd be in New Helic City by the time you made it across this place. And I can't yell that loud."

She took a few steps up the stairway, the marbled floor clicking from her shoes. The bottom step remained marble, but the next step up sported a cobalt carpeting all the way up to the top.

"Yours is a nice place. I don't know what to do with all this," she swept her hand wide, indicating the carved angels and furniture topped with vases and crystal bowls and all manner of items, "I'm afraid anything I touch will break, and even though it's mine, it'd be a shame to make this.. dirty?" She appeared puzzled about it. "I don't think my father lived in any of this, he just kept it pristine."

(( Ooc: I would just like both of you to know that I don't know if I'll ever be the same after reading those five threads so I can catch up on this. I was fangirl squealing during Deals with Devils AND WE ALL KNOW WHY, YOU DOGS, YOU ))

It was crazy how fast time flew. One minute they were all escaping the newest ultimate evil and, the next, it was six months later and she was being fetched by this scatterbrain. Not to say it wasn't nice to see Hisk, she supposed, but it was Hisk. Small doses or no doses at all. So when he appeared before her, gushing about the many evils the world had planted at the feet of her two companions - not that Razor had any idea what he was talking about - there wasn't a choice in the matter. They'd all been through some of the worst situations a person could even imagine and managed to overcome them, together. And it was unusual for Hisk to seek her out on his own, though the woman had yet to decide if it was really as bad as he claimed. The dull click of her boots on the floor was unsettling, an echo that seemed to stretch on and on down the hall, long after she'd paused to glance past what must have been the third large set of finely polished doors into another ballroom. Alright, maybe Vira's old man had been a swell guy at some point in this life, but was he ever honestly so popular they needed multiple ballrooms? It was ridiculous. And she was lost. Where had that ditz run off to?

The woman grumbled under her breath, continuing on her path into this maze of a manor, trying to ignore the way the silence sent a chill down her spine. It was only with an occasional glance behind her that kept her pace steady and calm, the slithering movements of Nightmare more welcome in this place then ever before. "Did you see which way he ran off? At all? Or are we going to keep wandering aimlessly through these halls until something stabs us?" A snort from the violet lizard. "Hey, with our track record, it's possible. Don't be snide."

Snide? No, not at all. Not even a bit. Those dark orbs stayed focused in front of them and Razor felt her own eyes narrowing, slowly turning around again. Any second now. He'd been quiet for too long and, given the circumstances, it was clear what he was upset about. And, like clockwork, a sigh that sent hot air against the back of her legs as Nightmare finally caved. I just think it's funny how--

"Junon will take care of him. We've been over this. In fact, the entire way here, we went over this. What, did you want me to bring him with us? Into what could very well be another terrible situation?" Silence. "That's what I thought."

...and you've made up your mind concerning him? "Not here. We're definitely not talking about it here." Razor tensed, red eyes shifting towards a more quaint set of doors. They were still unreasonably large, but wasn't quite as bad as the handful she'd stumbled across. The soft murmur from the ajar gateway sounded...vaguely familiar. She shifted closer, jaw clenching as the two voices got louder, clearer; oh gross, was she actually happy to hear them? Relieved that they were alright, Razor could understand. But happy to see them? It'd only been half a year, surely they'd gone longer times then...actually, thinking about it, the last couple of years had been filled with so much disaster and trauma that they'd had no choice but to stick together.

As she stood there like an idiot, hesitating entering a room that held no danger aside from her companions, Nightmare shifted past; sliding through the entryway and rising up on his back legs to stand awkwardly upright. The thick clunk of his tail against the floor was a clear sign he was pleased to see them. Oh, good. Hisk said you were in trouble, or I assume that's what he was trying to say, it's hard to figure out sometimes, but you seem well. That long violet and black neck twisted towards the door, Razor giving him a dirty look as she joined her organoid, hand raising in a vague greeting. "Yeah, something like that. Only thing I remember out of that conversation was him mentioning a fluffy floozy."

(( well THAT was longer then I thought it would be >> ))

(( Hay gurl haaaay ;D You know I live for inducing squealing. ))

Raven was mid-step when he heard the clack of Nightmare’s claws on the floor. The possibility of imminent threat ignited his senses and he spun to face the creature, instinctively drawing his gun and training it on the threat. But- Raven knew that face- that was no threat. He lowered the pistol as Razor appeared, though he regarded her with extreme suspicion.

He looked back to Vira for her reaction, hoping she saw the same duo he was. He said nothing, fearing their companions’ arrival was a trick of his Sevisse-ridden mind (as if drawing weapons on a hallucination didn’t make him any more of a fool if they weren’t real).

For a solid ten seconds, Vira stared at Nightmare like she couldn't believe he was there, either. The first thing that popped into her brain to say was, "how the hell did you get in my house?", but she figured that would be stupid. Razor was Razor, she could probably get into the back of a bank and not draw any attention. The second thing was, "where the hell has your ass been for the past six months?", which was also dumb, because she had a house.

"All three of us are together. We're gonna fucking die." Came out instead, and, well, she probably should have went with option one or two.

A dull sound began from down the hallway, sounding something like joyous yipping, and Hisk himself came sliding into view on his butt, turning round on his tail as he came to a slow stop near them.

Hisky wanted to be sure Razzy was okay! So Hisky went and got 'er. He nodded, as if this was the most sensible thing to have done. Vivi missed ye, he added to Razor, and his tone sounded genuine enough. An' Hisky met some fluffies on 'is way out, so Hisky told Razzy 'bout 'em!

"Oh," Vira said, a little surprised. So Hisk had seen them, too? And they had left him alone?

"Umm. Hello." She said, a little uncertainly. The thought about keeping quiet in front of Razor, Timber, and Hisk came back to her from earlier. She promptly considered she was cursed, and she even peeked around stealthily to see if the other woman was here, too.

Nightmare felt his head slowly tilting to the side as the three reunited, dark gaze shifting from Raven to Vira. The organoid wasn't accustomed to seeing the male unsure of himself and it set off alarms that he hadn't been worried about since they'd left Evrioz. Something had happened, but just how bad was it? He glanced upwards, trying to trace where Shadow and Blizzard could be as Razor gave a snort. "Oh, c'mon. Don't say that. It's true, but I mean, we could wait and see what's gonna kill us this time. Unless the--"

The woman grimaced as the yips filled her ears, turning somewhat to watch Hisk make his entry. "Yeah, see if I'm okay and then vanish into the household, like I know where I'm going in this place. And yeah, the...fluffies. I'm under the impression at this point that you have evil ass mice? Dastardly raccoons? What is happening?" She took a step towards them, the sneer Razor usually adopted when talking with them falling away, a genuinely concerned expression shifting across her features. She'd never been a fan of being kept in the dark or out of the loop, and though the woman would joke about it, the organoids and people in this house were important to her.

Nightmare nudged Razor lightly with his snout, the woman glancing at him sharply, though she stopped her advancement towards the two. "...alright, alright. Serious time, I get it. So...out of the jumble of a story I was told on my way here, there was something like Vais inside of Kurt, who - my condolences, by the way - latched onto Raven, and now there are...fluffies after them?"

Vira’s acknowledgment was a relief for Raven, who had been pretty frozen aside from glancing back and forth between the two women, even if that acknowledgment was a poor choice in greetings. Not that he could be a critic of greetings. Though, as what she said sunk in, and recounting their past experiences, shit, Vira had a point.

He shook his head as a faint grin tugged at the edges of his mouth. He couldn’t lie to himself. He was glad to see Razor. The events of Evrioz made him appreciate the woman much more, and he had occasionally wondered what she had been up to since then. Even Hisk’s bumbling foolery didn’t bother him the same way. He stowed his weapon. It must have been something about continually staring slow and yet imminent death in the face that made him grow past thinking of them as mere annoyances.

Before he realized what he was doing, he had nearly closed the gap between them. It was Razor’s pointed question that stopped him in his tracks. He hooked his thumbs in his pockets as his gaze fell to the ground for a brief moment. Then to Hisk, whom he raised an eyebrow. He would have to talk to that organoid about this later. Finally, he looked up to Razor once more, “Well, I haven’t seen the ‘fluffies’ yet, but that’s the gist.” Then the grin finally returned, “And you came all this way to rescue us?” He chuckled, though not maliciously.

"Not mice.. exactly. They're, um, foxes. They talk. Talked to me." Like before, she seemed like they'd think her crazy, so she was scratching the back of her neck as she got closer. When she reached Nightmare, she grinned and patted his snout. "Hey buddy. Long time. Blizzard asks 'bout you a lot."

Hisky too!

"Him, too," Vira flicked a look back at the happily bobbing organoid. "Sorry he came and dragged you guys out--"

Hisky wanted to see Razzy! An' Hisky was lonely. Mister Lord Raven's always busy, an' yer always gone.
"Hisk, you could talk to the ceiling fan and not be lonely."
Ye, Hisky has tried ter make friends with 'em, but they don't talk back unless ye make 'em spin! Hisky.. 'as not figured out how ter do that yet.

Vira sighed, letting that part go, because of course he had tried.

She startled a little at the reminder of Kurt's death, and the fact that Razor would think she'd want condolences considering the circumstances they had last been in, but she inclined her head anyway.

"The fox thingies aren't actually after me this time. Just Vais. The short story is, Raven's new friend is like Vais, but she's.. um. Recalcitrant. Real prickly personality, as usual. Likes to call other girls sluts. Well, me." She shrugged a bit, "dunno what she'll find to call you. Anyway, the foxes want to kill them, or something. Same old song and dance. Something literally unkillable walking around trying to murder us killables."

For a moment, Razor felt her brows furrowed. Talking foxes that wanted to kill a shadowy monstrosity like Vais? It sounded ridiculous. But, given just how...absurd their life had been up to that point, it wasn't a stretch. The woman wasn't sure if she should be worried about this newfound ability to just accept the bullshit that the universe thrust in their direction or...well, roll with it. "Ok. I'm...not going to question it. And hey." That sneer pulled itself into place as Razor let her bright gaze shift towards Raven. "Just because I've only helped make the situation worse the last however many times doesn't mean I won't save both of you by randomly showing up one of these days."

Nightmare nuzzled into Vira's hand gently, the heat from his snout shifting around her fingers. I'm happy you're both alright. I've been meaning to look for you, see if all was well, but...never a dull moment. He gave a pointed look towards Razor, clearly blaming her for the radio silence between all of them.

Razor couldn't stop herself from giving a laugh at the description of this...friend. "Oh, good. And I was worried she'd be boring. Interesting that she'd call you a slut, though, I've seen you cut into more men then bed them."

“Yeah. We’re not friends," he retorted with a growl, bristling at the specifics of their relationship with Sevisse. “I’d kill that fucking bitch myself if I could. She’s nothing like Vais, and I’m honestly hoping the foxes kill her. ...we can’t risk losing Vais though," he paused and looked to Vira before continuing, "Without him, she’s free to rampage.” His expression softened the longer he lingered on her, and perhaps it was tinged with sorrow. But he soon remembered their company and shook his head, crossing both arms over his chest. “They’ve been at each other's throats for months, but now that there are killer foxes in the mix, they’ve called a truce, and she’s infatuated with him? So here we are.”

"Uhh."

A+ elegant response, by the way.

"I gotta say, I haven't stabbed anyone in a while. Man or otherwise. It's been quiet up until now. We've been trying to make sense of all this," she said, waving her hand vaguely at the stairwell behind her. "I don't even know where this staircase goes. This place is a monstrosity. Like, the lawyers showed me his assets, and they're just about as astronomical as this house, but I don't see why a person would spend so much money on something they don't even get to see all of."

It was an eerie place by itself, and there was a constant silence about the room that said no one had talked in the area in years.

"But yeah, her name is Sevisse, and she seems to have developed a crush on poor Vais. He isn't impressed, as you can imagine," she grinned hugely, though, because his obvious discomfort was the most awkward she had seen her beast.

Razor glanced towards the staircase, a growing look of disdain shifting across her features at the cherubs that lined their path. Kurt had certainly made interesting design choices. Ballrooms, lovely angelic sculptures, marble floors. A part of her wanted to wreck the finely crafted models, create a little noise in the too big manor, more then the soft murmuring of their voices could manage on their own. For what must have been the fifth time since she'd arrived, Razor leaned down to graze a finger along the inside of her boot, feeling the hilt of the daggers there. They wouldn't be useful, they hadn't been since they had simple problems, like people who could be killed, but it was a security blanket she had trouble abandoning. "Well, guess I'll join you on your search for these foxes, though I'm not sure how useful I'll be when it comes to talking with them." She'd always been more of a hit them until they pass out and then remember they had valuable information type of person. It was a flaw she was slowly trying to simmer down.

Nightmare sank back onto all fours, his long body slinking forward to shift up the stairs. This is a first though. Our foes usually monologue, not have actual informative conversations.

Raven's eyes traced up the stairs and settled on a particular pair of sculptures. His brow furrowed in thought. "Some of this stuff reminds me of decor from the palace in Guygalos." He suppressed a shudder and shook his head. "I wouldn't be surprised if this was his "palace" for whatever kingdom he was building. Gotta keep up with your competition to play in that ring," he added with a shrug, "That guy had a lot of projects."

He was quick to follow after Nightmare, though he paused to throw Razor an accusatory look. "Razor, are you sure you want to? These aren't the "dastardly raccoons" or whatever you were imagining," he smirked, leaning against the railing. "Plus, Vais and Sevisse have interest in protecting Vira and I, but you? Not so sure. At least Sevisse doesn't. I hope that doesn't put a target on you." While half serious, the other half of him knew she was quite capable of defending herself. Nightmare was also a stealthy force to be reckoned with. But these facts did not stop him from teasing her- which was probably the only way he knew how to express his fondness for her. "What have you two even been doing since we got out of that ancient hell-hole?"

"They didn't seem very shy of talking," Vira muttered, remembering how they had accosted her in the dark. "One of them is red, he's a boy. Miska, I think he said. The girl is white. Seemed a bit more full of herself, too."

As Nightmare scooted by her side, Hisk followed after him, bumping into Raven's legs with his snout. Hisky wants to 'elp! Don't like the doggo in the other room. Hisky'll go with ye instead.

"Vais likes Razor," Vira said, "well.. As much as he can like a person. He protected you when he hated the air you breathed." Vira knew Vais, and though he had never really said his opinion of their friend, he had never said he disliked her, either. Which was good for the shadowbeast. Usually if he said nothing at all, it meant he tolerated you.

"I don't think he'd just let you die," she said, grinning at the other girl. "And you could probably have a nasty verbal war with Sevisse, but I don't think she would hurt you either. Not unless she'd wanna get her tail ripped off and fed to her."

"Ah, ya see. No reason to be worried, Nightmare. One of them is full of themselves, we're bound to get a monologue." A disappointed sigh followed. No need to break tradition, I suppose.

The woman gave a snort as she strolled past Raven when he questioned her, stopping to turn when she was a few steps higher up - to make up for the height difference, damn him - to give him a light pat on the head. "There, there. And did you really think I would come all the way over here and then just leave because we're fighting an enemy that'll probably kill us? That makes like the second or third time in the last two years at this point that an impossible challenge has come to push us in the mud and call us losers. Figuratively." Razor waved a hand dismissively, continuing up the stairs; resisting the urge to push one of the cherubs as they passed it, with mildly disappointing success.

Vais? Like her? As the other woman explained, it made more sense, though that flabbergasted look took some time to fade. As far as Razor could remember, they'd had as basic a relationshp as one could have between a human and a...shadow dragon.  She acknowledged he was powerful and could crush her quite easily and he was aware she was alive. And that was that. "Well...I mean, I was going to push her buttons regardless, but if he's going to back me up as I taunt her, by all means."

"Eh. Well, my house was...sorta destroyed when we were kidnapped, so I've been dealing with that." There was a tense silence, one that was alleviated when Nightmare stopped completely, tilting his long neck back to fix Razor with a pointed stare. "...oh, right. I also had a baby about a month or so ago, he was...a little premature, but he's good. So there's that, I guess."

Hisk’s offer only bothered Raven for a moment, but before he could discourage the organoid, he remembered the visions Sevisse had accidentally flung upon them- particularly her maiming the poor beast’s mind. He sighed, resigned. “Okay. Just don’t get yourself hurt,” he reached out to the organoid and patted his snout, then looked back to Vira with a shrug. “You’re probably right.” Though, while generally agreeing, he knew if Vais had to choose he would choose Vira, and that was what worried him.

His eyes followed Razor as she ventured past him, and he couldn’t help but grin at her efforts to even the playing field, so to speak. He found himself only arching an eyebrow at her speech though, not entirely sure if that was her attempt at encouragement or if she was just patronizing him. He only shook his head as he trailed behind her up the stairs. It was good to have her back. Even her sass. Truthfully, he and Vira needed all the help they could get.

And he was lingering on this thought when Razor dropped her baby bomb. Like it was nothing. WTF Razor.

He literally froze mid-step, shock written on his features as plain as the bold marking on his face. Did he hear that right?

Yes. Yes he did.

“A baby? Like a human baby?”

It was a good thing he had a grip on the railing, as it felt like someone pulled a rug out from underneath him. Raven had no siblings, but as he dashed up to the same step as her, he thought this must be like those moments when an older brother finds out their little sister is pregnant, but they don’t approve of the relationship. He had no idea about this relationship. Was there a relationship? Had she been hurt? Or was he really that far out of the loop? The baby already existed? And she was here? What? What the fuck?

???

“What the fuck, Razor?” He skipped the next step up and slipped in front of her, blocking her path. “You left him? You can’t stay here- what if something happens to you? Seriously!” He gawked at her in some sort of total loss for appropriate reaction to a woman’s ‘I had a baby’ announcement. “...Who’s the father?”

Hisk seemed to have about the same reaction as the other male in the room. He sat bolt upright, his head spikes practically vibrating. Ba-b. Baby. Razzy 'as a baby? Hisky thought Vivi had those! How did ye get one?! Hisky 'asn't ever found one ter ask..

Maybe females just.. accepted these types of things better. Vira was a little surprised, but not exactly aghast at the news. "Wow, that's.. unexpected. But, congratulations?" Her voice was a little uncertain, but not Raven's rapid reaction. She eyed him as he moved in front of their friend, and heaved a much suffering sigh at the blantant question that his brain decided to pose. She moved up the steps and slipped in between he and Razor, pushing him back another step.

"Raven, you can't just ask things like that, it's rude. And frankly, none of our business." She laughed a little, though.

"He's right, though. I don't know if I'm comfortable dragging you into this situation. You're our friend, yes, but.. isn't that a little bigger than us?"

Nightmare pretended to not notice the glare that Razor fixed his way, turning back to continue up the steps. He was sure she'd have plenty of things to say to him after this whole thing was done with, but the organoid didn't see a reason to keep it quiet. They trusted these two, and not telling them, considering the situation was...well, it didn't feel right. He shifted an uncomfortable glance towards Hisk. That she does. And women make them. The process itself is...incredibly awkward and I'd rather not remember it.

Her sigh was audible in the large room as Raven jumped ahead of her, cocking an eyebrow at his reaction. It was more energetic then she pictured and, despite how annoyed she was, the corners of her lips tugged into a slight smile. Her hands rose in front of her in a defenseless gesture, waving her fingers lightly. "Alright, dad, calm down." She gave Vira a grin as the other woman got included, hands coming together in a light clap. "Thank you! He's pretty cute, I'd show you pictures, but believe it or not, I didn't have time to grab any." She began to slide to the side to walk around them, hesitating as Vira repeated Raven's concerns, breath catching in her throat. They had a point. It had been fine, running into danger when it was just herself, but...the woman cleared her throat, red eyes shifting back to the two of them. "I...it's fine."

A hand extended, lightly putting her palm on Vira's shoulder and giving it a gentle squeeze. "I've taken care of it. So don't worry about it, okay?" With that and a quick smile to them both, she walked on past them. "Oh, the father. I don't think you ever met him, Raven. Vira did once or twice. His name is Katai."

Raven shrugged in defense at Vira’s reprimand. “I just wanted to make sure she was okay, believe it or not,” he countered quietly, hoping only Vira would hear. “Men are animals sometimes and I didn’t know she was involved with anyone, that’s all.”

The woman’s brief excitement at Vira’s response evoked some tinge of jealousy mixed with regret- a whole weird cocktail of feelings, really. If he had known it was a good thing, perhaps he would have had a more appropriate reaction. But this whole baby thing caught him utterly off guard.

Plus, her explanations didn’t help one bit! He stared as she sidestepped them and continued on. “Took care of it?” He echoed softly to Vira, much more cognizant of his reaction, though still thoroughly confused.
