States With Marine Detachments In Their Naval Militia

1. Alaska
2. New York

In the early part of the twentieth century about a third of the states had a Naval Militia, essentially a maritime version of the National Guard. Naval militiamen played important roles in the Spanish-American War and World War I. However, by World War II many states had abandoned their Naval Militias which included both naval and maritime personnel. During the postwar period only New York still possessed a naval militia, to be joined by Alaska.
